Notes / Commercial Description:
It's a bold, smooth-bodied concoction that oozes dark-roasted coffee aromas and flavors of espresso and semi-sweet chocolate. We round out these heady pleasures with a dose of flaked oatmeal for a creamy body and a semi-dry finish. Unforgettable.

Oatmeal stout pours a black color with a small barley lacing head. Nice rich creamy aroma, with hints of smoke, chocolate and oats. Flavor is light and watery, but smokey oat flavors do come through. A bit watery, but not bad. Overall a decent plain oatmeal.

Mixed feelings on this offering from Breckenridge...

I really like how it looked coming out of the glass, but was under-whelmed when it came to its odor - not much of anything I could really pull out with my nose. The mouthfeel was quite impressive - very smooth and a very clean finish - it got better the warmer the beer became. The taste followed much of what met my nose - so again, nothing truly to mention. Overall, a decent beer, just a mixed bag of experiences for me.

The beer pours a thick dark brown with a nice tan head. There is an aroma of toffee and chocolate. Some mild toasty malts and a hint of coffee. The beer tastes like a basic stout with roasted malts, coffee, and chocolate flavorings but they are are very mild. Nothing stands out in the flavor. The beer is very smooth and a nice drink just nothing to write home about.

From a bottle, pours a very dark brown with a dense one finger dark tan head. Aroma is a pleasant burnt coffee. Upfront flavor is roasted malt made smooth by the oats; follow on flavors are of espresso, chocolate and caramel. Mouth feel is decent for a regular beer, but really disappointing for an oatmeal stout.

There is just not a lot going on with this beer. The color is a dark brown. Poured a nice head that left a nice trace of foam on my beer through out the whole drink. I get a slight chocolate and a very little roastiness but it is all very subtle. The taste is about the same with the roastiness more prounounced in the after taste. The mouthfeel is creamy which I like. Overall nothing really stands out about this beer and is very plain.

Hmm, this is a lighter shade of black and brown than I like to see when hitting up an oatmeal stout. The head wasn't top notch either. For shame. Aroma was mild roast, nothing shocking.

Taste is better than the appearance, the mouthfeel mixed with oats gives a roasty taste and easy drinking vibe. Nothing special, but it comes together substance wise even if appearance wise it leaves a little to be desired.

Pours dark brown and with a couple fingers of cream colored head that recedes quickly. Lots of coffee and roastiness on the nose. Taste is of coffee, roasted malt, char, dark chocolate and a hint of raisins. Full bodied and with flavors that linger. I quite like it.

Breckenridge Oatmeal Stout has a thin-to-medium, beige, cola-type head of foam, a very dark-brown (essentially black) appearance, with tight bubble streams on the sides of the glass, and just a few lacing strings left behind. Aroma is of acrid, sharp malt, some raisin, and pungent note. Taste is of acrid, roasted malt, a bit of char, some sweetness, and the bitterness stems from the carbon, more so than from hops. Mouthfeel is a bit watery, and Breckenridge Oatmeal Stout finishes medium-wet and a bit dull.

The appearance might have been the highlight, though there's nothing really wrong with this stout. It just has lots of competition these days. On pouring the dark cream head stood up tall and proud and lacy remnants remained on the side of the glass even when the beer was finished. The carbonation never quit, with lots of small bubbles visible when I held the dark brown (but not muddy) liquid up to the light. The nose was straightforward, not remarkable, nothing unexpected, a bit hoppy, which was an accurate predictor of taste. The taste was likewise mild at first, with hops emerging. It was long developing, if never highly complex. The beer was a bit too cool when I first poured it, and once it warmed to the correct temperature the taste was better balanced and the mouthfeel a bit creamy with a hoppy dry finish.

Poured a 12 oz bottle into a regular pint glass.

A - Nice tan foam. Beer is a very dark brown. Leaves lacing.

S - smells are pretty faint. Bready, roast, and toffee and coffee aromas, but they are very quiet.

T - Very little bitterness, but is very heavy on carbonation. Has normal stout flavors of coffee, chocolate, and charred malts but they are more reserved than in other stouts. No oatmeal taste at all.

M - Heavily carbonated it’s one of the first things I noticed, you can feel the bubbles on your tongue and it sticks around the whole time. Has a watery finish. A heavy beer, but it doesn't feel full in your mouth.

O - Over carbonated to the point that it was distracting. It doesn't taste like oatmeal at all. Has flavors of a normal stout but they are more reserved. Not crazy about this one.

Pours dark but not over done. This one doesnt over do the dark chocolates and thickness. Still nice hops in this, well balanced beer. A little Under rated I feel. Well made brew.

Appearance is bold and black with a 2 finger thick tan head with average lacing.
Smell is heavily aromatic and chocolatey, with a slight scent of coffee.
Taste is beautifully balanced and rich, with hints of chocolate. It mellows out with a mild taste of coffee.
Feel is incredibly smooth without being overly thick. It couldn't go down easier.

Appearance - black in color, head retention is decent. Lacing is there. Smell - I get hints of chocolate and perhaps oatmeal. Taste - definite chocolate and some oatmeal to smooth it out at the end. Overall - solid offering. Nothing to blow you away, but good for the winter months.

Poured 12 oz bottle into glass. 5% abv

Appearance- Pours a dark mahogany. Light brown 2 finger head that lingers. Opaque.

Smell- Toffee, oatmeal and a touch of molasses.

Taste- Grainy flavor with a sweet milk chocolate flavor. Bits of coffee come later though subtle. Has a chalky/chewy quality. The finish is slightly bitter with an oat flavor.

Mouthfeel- Medium in body with active carbonation.

Overall- A well crafted oatmeal stout with a variety of flavors. Quite smooth and satisfying. Would get this again.

Breckenridge Brewery - Oatmeal Stout. 4.95% ABV. 12oz bottle poured into standard pint glass.

Look: Pours a solid black color, completely opaque. Non aggressive pour yielded a small, light tan head, that dissipates rather quickly, leaving only a ring of lacing.

Smell: Rich coffee, dark malts, and toasted oats on the nose. Some nuttiness detected too.

Feel: A lot of carbonation, but the body is rather thin. Incredibly smooth.

Taste: Immediate taste of bitter coffee, and toasty oat flavor. On the back end, it becomes unsweetened chocolate, and smokey coffee, and leaves a dry aftertaste of the same.

Overall: When I first saw this beer, I figured it would be thick and creamy; it is not, however as much as I had hoped. Don't get me wrong, this is still an enjoyable beer, but seems to be lacking a little bit in taste and smell. It is pleasantly smooth, and easy to drink, although it feels overly carbonated.

Starts out a bit boring. I don't notice much flavor when the beer hits my mouth. It develops into a solid beer with notes of chocolate, coffee and charred malts. I notice the smoothness of the oatmeal but feel the beer is too heavily carbonated. On nitro, this beer would be pretty special!

Edit: when drinking from a bottle, I notice a much more balanced beer... Weird!

12-oz bottle into porter/stout glass

A - extreme amount of dark tan foam fills the glass (have to wait several minutes for it to subside before enjoying a sip), pitch black body with ruby highlights, excellent lace

S - sweet chocolate, coffee, smoke, earthy

T - chocolate, coffee, charred malts, nutty, light earthy and fruity notes, dry smoky finish

M - smooth medium body, high carbonation

O - more dry and less sweet than a typical oatmeal stout, but good nonetheless

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a tulip:

Looks delicious-dark and frothy, with a thick mocha-colored head accompanied by a deep brown body. Lots of little bubbles. Head sticks around a while. Smell is faint roasted malt, with not much complexity. Slightly nutty, and only slightly roasty. Not very pungent for a stout, though lesser aroma is to be expected at the ABV on this one I suppose. Taste somewhat exceeds the aroma, with solid roastiness, and some milk chocolate mixed in. Tastes more like a porter than a stout, but it's got good flavor and some layers of roast, coffee, and some nuttiness from the oatmeal that makes for a darn good flavor profile overall. Feels medium-soft with a quickly dissipating finish. Would've liked a tad more thickness. Overall, it's a solid little dark beer, and I'd definitely drink it again.

This one's not fresh, purchased on clearance.

Aroma is nutty, lightly roasty, and fairly chocolatey. There's a hint of dark fruit/sherry.

Flavor is more roast dominant, finishing fairly bitter and charred. Dark chocolate weaves throughout, along with a nutty malt backbone, but the bitterness overwhelms the finish.

Poured into a typical pint glass. Pours a very dark brown color with a thin tan head. The head dissipates fairly quickly but the lacing is very good and really stays with you throughout your enjoyment. Smells kind of a strong roasted malty note. Initial taste flavor is an explosion of dark roasted malts and a strong black coffee, mellows out to a dry finish with a dry coffee aftertaste. Definitely a good full flavored beer. I enjoyed this brew as a learning experience but would probably not buy a 6-pack of it. I would drink it again but would not really seek it out.
