Style: Oatmeal Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.95%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
It's a bold, smooth-bodied concoction that oozes dark-roasted coffee aromas and flavors of espresso and semi-sweet chocolate. We round out these heady pleasures with a dose of flaked oatmeal for a creamy body and a semi-dry finish. Unforgettable.

This silky stout settles to a very dark brown body headed by about three quarters of an inch of oatmeal colored foam.

The smell is subtle and lies somewhere between coffee and oats.

The taste is mixed as well, but very likeable. Slight coffee and chocolate flavors are suffused with vanilla, coriander, and nutmeg. Those spices aren't listed as ingredients, but I swear they are in there somewhere. It must be the chocolate and oats.

The head dissipates evenly and is gone before the last swig with some cling along the sides of a standard pint glass.

I am not a fan of coffee, and many stouts rely on it heavily. The Breckenridge Oatmeal Stout does not rely so heavily on coffee and that is a plus for me.

This would be a great dessert beer. think ice cream and caramel...mmmm...

Had this on 2012-05-10 in Columbia, PA

A - Opaque dark brown with a 1.25-finger tan head with nice lacing.

S - Mild aromas of chocolate and earthy spice.

T - Pungent, metallic, dark roasted grain and chocolate and pepper with some roasted and hop bitterness. Finishes with a mish-mash of individual flavors. Not well-balanced.

M - Medium mouthfeel and carbonation. Smooth and substantial.

O - This one isn't doing it for me. It does have a lot of flavor for a lowish ABV oatmeal stout but not a flavor profile that I'd want to return to.

Appearance - Just what I want to see in a stout. A gorgeous deep brown almost black appearance with goldish tones

Smell - I was hoping for a bit more here, manly just hops smell with not a lot else. Still a good smell, but I wanted a difference from the normal stouts.

Taste - I really enjoyed this beer on taste. It has a great normal stout that is more mellow and not nearly as sharp as the rest. The oatmeal taste comes right in after, almost like there's some Quaker oats sitting at the bottom.

Mouthfeel - Not a lot of carbonation, but this beer definately doesn't need it. It matches the flavor well, but a little bit of head isn't a bad thing...

Overall - This is a nice sipping beer when your watching tv or playing some xbox. Im not sure what you could match it with, but it is great on its own.

Poured into a pint glass. There is a half inch creamy tan head that leaves sticky lacing.

The aroma is slightly sweet with some maple and vanilla malty notes.

The taste is slightly sweet, with just a touch of roasted notes to balance out the maltiness. This has a nice balance, and is the best tasting Breckenridge I've tried yet.

The body is light to medium with nice medium to heavy carbonation. Not bad as a nice easy drinking stout.

Small to medium sized long lasting light brown head finally settle into a decent lacing above a clear dark brown to black colored stout.

Roasted malt aroma with hints of dark chocolate, coffee, and cherries are subdued, it would be nice if they were a little more pronounced.

Dark chocolate lingers in the taste, nice rich roasted malts with a Hershey's Special Dark Chocolate taste dominates.

A lasting light dry aftertaste laced with bits of roasted dark chocolate malts.

Quite tasty, maybe enhanced by the rains and lower than normal temperature outside.
