Notes / Commercial Description:
Part of our Ingenuity Series of Barrel-aged Inventions, Dérailleur®” bière-de-garde (“beer for keeping”) is a deep golden ale brewed to celebrate the global passion for cycling, and named after a bicycle’s gear-changing mechanism invented by a French cycling enthusiast in 1905. This ale is malty and rustic, with a spicy yeast character. Subtle flavors of French oak were derived from ageing in Rhône varietal Mourvèdre wine barrels over one year. This release is a special blend of vintages; the older barrels provide mild acidity and the yearling contributes the oak and rustic, bready malt character. The resulting blend is an excellent example of a truly French farmhouse-style cellar creation.

On tap at 38 Degrees in Alhambra, CA.

Pours a murky dark orange-brown with a foamy tan head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. A foamy curtain of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is slightly sour with grain, fruit, white wine, and acidic aromas. Taste is much the same with slightly sour grain, fruit, white wine, and wood flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

Serving type: on tap.

On-tap at Beachwood Brewing

A hazy golden orange color with a white head. Good fruitiness on the nose, mostly citrus, but a little bit of peach. Grass, straw, and must give a soft funkiness. A touch of oak, white wine, and lemon zest. The flavor has a nice peach quality along with mild tartness of lemon. Lots of straw, a moderate oak note along with some drying tannins. A light malt flavor, mostly just bread. The nose is a bit better than the flavor, but enjoyable.

On-tap at Beachwood II,

A: Pours a dark goldenrod with a medium white head, nice head retention and lace.

S: Some white wine character, heavy spice, very 'classic' saison nose.

T: White pepper, yeast, earthy hops. Nice overall malt flavour, though I wanted something more from the Sauv Blanc barrels.

M: Medium-bodied, crisp, creamy, soft carbonation.

O: A nice saison, I wish the barrels as I said showed up more, but certainly enjoyable.

Nice, stronger biere de garde. Aged in Malibu Family Wines Sauvignon Blanc barrels.

Aroma is sweet with some light berries (strawberries, etc) with white wine notes. Tropical fruits. Very pleasant.

The taste carries through nicely. Lots of sweet but delicate fruits in the flavor (much of it likely from the Sauvignon Blanc barrels) with some earthy notes. Rather tasty.

Definitely drinkable.

Recommended. This is a nice and tasty beer created in celebration of the Tour of California.
