A basic light beer, light like water refreshing in the hot sun of Vietnam.

Had this one August 13th, 2017 in Ho Chi Minh City. Hints of banana in a highly carbonated, light and crisp lager beer that tastes like your typical Macro Brewery.

Tastes like any mass produced bottle of suds. Cheep and cheerful in the Vietnamese sun.

As long as it's cold it's refreshing in this climate.

On-draught in Hanoi at Pacific Beer (which, sadly, seems to longer produce and/or serve their own house beer).

Refreshing when cold, Larue is a clean drinking light-bodied pilsner malt-driven lager and little else. Simple and shallow to regional standards, but easy to drink and approachable.

I'd happily nab it again, especially on-draught.

Poured from a 33cL can into a glass in Hué

Looks like carbonated green tea (no head). It smells sweet and bready. It tastes, Ye gods, like lagers of olde. There is a peculiarly nasty streak to this that reminds me of my early encounters with the likes of Stella and Milwaukee's best. It's at first hard to put my finger on precisely why it's so repelling, because it's more psychological than sensory. It's very sulfuric. That's it. Rotten eggs so. The feel is crisp and dry, but the overall experience is not one to be repeated.

Can from a supermarket in Vietnam. From notes.

A - Poured golden and bright with good carbonation. One finger of loose white head and a ring of retention. No lace.

S - Lot's of honey, sweet aroma.

T - Honey, sweet grain, no corn, quite mild but not adjuncty.

M - Strong carbonation, light-ish body, creamy finish with a bit of dryness.

O/D - Not bad. Not water at least. Has flavour and seemed to be acceptable and passable, but does nothing to really impress.

Experienced in : Saigon
Appealing to me : - - -
Less appealing to me : taste not good for long drinking

I will not drink this beer unless there are no other choices.

currently traveling through SE Asia and sampling the local offerings. this is fairly popular in Vietnam but I haven't seen it elsewhere. beers in this region are almost entirely light-bodied lagers meant for fast quaffing in the blazing heat and humidity. all ratings are based on my understanding of the style here.

A - gold, pale, decent head, not much retention

S - usually these beers have virtually no smell. this one is little more potent, smells decent but perhaps leaning towards the sour end

T - this has a surprisingly bitter hop finish relative to the style. virtually no malt presence though, so not balanced like others

MF - crisp, definitely more body than others of the style, good carbonation

O - this is definitely distinctive amongst so many lagers that have virtually no smell or flavor profile. the picked a direction and went with it, unfortunately i don't like the lingering bitter finish

My brother, who lives in Shanghai, was able to bring me back some of the beers he found in his travels around the Southeastern Asian region. He picked up this gem from Vietnam. It's a fairly popular beer there, and it seems the Biere Larue Export has already made it to beeradvocate. This, the Biere Larue, is the popular drink that isn't distributed outside of the country.

A: Pours a light yellow color of a pale lager that is actually surprisingly darker than expected. Pours a slight white head that faded quickly and left virtually no lacing.

S: Smells strongly of rice and rice like fillers. Slight hints of malts in the end.

T: Very light flavor. Tastes mainly of rice fillers and other cheap beer brewing ingredients. Almost has a sweet flavor that resembles a cheap malt liquor.

M: A nice amount of chew for such a light lager.

D: The beer is marginally drinkable. Definitely a poor mans brew.

Overall: Overall the beer was on par with my expectations. Beers from Southeast Asia are typically not know for their full bodies or decent flavors. The beer has a mild to sweet overall flavor. Hints of rice, filler, and malt scraps can also be found in the beer. All in all, I wasn't expecting a very high quality beer, so I wasn't extremely disappointed. I'm just glad I was able to try such an off the beaten trail brew.
