North Peak Hoodoo.

Ahhhhh North peak...total love hate relationship with these guys. I've hate a few greats, lots of goods and quite a few mehs outta these guys. For example, their IPAs are usually on point but their stouts and experimental beers are usually pretty meh. This one is pretty make or break in terms of how I feel about this brewery. Grabbed this Ron Jeremy dick bottle for $2.89 and I'm hoping for the best! Let's get to it!

Look - From the twelve ounce bottle hard poured into a coca cola pint glass because I'm lazy. Pours a moderate shade of copper-ish sunset with a tint of golden. The head is massive and demands more than one attempt at the pour. Head is frothy and slightly off white consisting of bubbly bliss. Carbonation appears to be about medium on thie brew. Lot's of lacing and stick after the beer is finished.

Smell - Earthy and just a bit of what I typically call oniony. I cannot really put a finger on what fruits I am smelling but they are there. Malt levels really dominate in the nose. Almost smells like a less catty version of Lagunitas Equinox.

Taste - Flavor evelopes with once again those fruit juices I cannot quite put a finger on. Pineapple maybe with a big dosage of malt to check things out. Just a hint of the dank eartyness. Very drying as well. Once again, tastes like a better version of Equinox.

Feel - The feel is very full and exceptionally creamy with a good dosage or carbonation. Beer sits very well and like a pillow within the mouth. Swallows quite juicy and easily. No alcohol presence.

Overall - This is a shorter review than what I typically do. I was a bit worried by the nose but this was a pretty good beer in the end. Just a touch more earthiness than what I would personally like but keeps the hops in check for the most part and the malts are very much welcome to this party..

Bottled 10/21/11

A - Pours clear copper with a huge head, largely due to a quick pour and the stubby bottle. Head has amazing retention and leaves a lot of lacing.

S - Lots of floral fresh hops, and juicy citrus hops. Really quite nice.

T - Pungent hop bite with nice grapefruit. Really juicy, with a nice bitterness throughout, but not overwhelming.

M - Medium mouthfeel that is slightly oily. Finishes dry and bitter.

O - One of the better beers I've had from North Peak, whom I had almost written off. This and their session IPA give me hope that there may be more good things coming from them in the future.

to me, this taste like a bigger version if sixpoint's sensi. earthy and a little dank, the hop profile is very tasty. this has a good malt profile that really helps balance this and make it much better than I had anticipated.

This is a slightly hazed orange=brown evoking old but polished bronze. The head caps at just over a finger and falls slowly. As it does, it leaves some solid patchy lacing.
The nose is pretty aromatic, heavy on woods with a sort of potpourri spiciness. It's very earthy, must and dank, maybe even a little mossy but in a rustic way that isn't bad. It's almost cottony, somehow, with a fruity sort of undertone.
The taste follows pretty closely with woods strongest and a sort of cheddary note along with the savory spicing and no emphasis on sweetness, just enough to balance. As it is, it leans pithy but not harsh or astringent with lots of that rustic earth coming through again.
Crispness bites yet it doesn't lose it, not to mention smoothness or carbonation even, with a good deal of time. The body is a solid medium and runs semi-dry, perhaps bordering drier.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Oct 23 12 on the bottle.

A: Pours a bright opaque orangish ruby with a 1.5 finger slightly yellowed head. Doesnt leave much lacing but the head sticks around for a while.

S: Very nice hop aroma going on here. A blend of grapefruit, pine and skunkiness. Malts certainly make up the backbone of the aroma.

T: This is one you can sit back and sip on. Has a real fresh hop taste to it but also a strong backing of malt. Earthiness and a whole hop sort of taste.

M: Medium bodied with ample carbonation. A little hot from the booze. Crisp dryness from the hop.

Overall I'm impressed with this beer. Can compete with some of the hoppier offerings out there. For any hophead especially those into wet hop IPAs.

My bro-in-law brought a HooDoo for a thanksgiving treat....THANKS BRO!!! The beer pours a dark orange haze with creamy white head that laces slightly. The smell has great pine and grapefruit tones. The taste is very good....9% are you kiddin me! Cannot tell at all. The pine and grapfruite are a great balance with the malt used. The mouthfeel is full bodied with good carbonation. Overall this is not a session beer, but a beer to be enjoyed. It is amazing.

A little surprised that this is not added in yet. I first had this at the Detroit Fall Beer Fest and it was one of my favorites. I didn't know that they had bottled it.

The appearance is a dark amber with about a finger of head. Nicely carbonated and slightly translucent. Nice lacing as its drank. I love the smell. Its fruity and cotton candy like, I even get some watermelon. A great fruitiness in the taste and I do pick up a little pineyness from the hops. Very hop forward and somewhat balanced with the malty side. The bottle says the IBU's are 99, so the bitterness and dryness is there. At 9%, the alcohol makes its presence known. Mouthfeel is a little on the heavy side.

Overall, this is a nice little twist on the wet hop style in that its a double IPA. It reminds me of a double IPA that comes from another Michigan brewery in January.
