Bottle: Poured a deep brown color ale with a light brown foamy head with goods retention and some lacing. Aroma of caramelized malt notes with candi sugar with some woody notes and light rum notes also perceptible. Taste is a nice mix of caramelized malt notes with some residual candi sugar notes with some woody notes and some rum notes that are also perceptible. Body is full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol notes. Quiet sweet but very much enjoyable.

375 ml bottle poured into goblet

A- Dark ruby red with a small off white head.

S- Bananas, some vanilla, oak, rum, brown sugar, touch of dark fruits.

T- Bananas, dark fruits, bread, some brown sugar, touch of earthy spice, oak, some rum.

M- Smooth, dry, light to medium body, carbonation is a little of the high side.

O- A great beer from Chimay, just wish the price was closer to their regular beers. Love the banana and rum combo.

750 ml bottle into signature chalice, bottled on 5/22/2017. Pours slightly hazy deep ruby red/light copper color with a 1 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big raisin, plum, fig, cherry, pear, red apple, red grape, peppercorn, clove, rum, toasted oak, caramel, brown sugar, nuttiness, and toasted brown bread; with lighter notes of banana, oaken vanilla, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, rum/oak barrels, candi sugar, and bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big raisin, plum, fig, cherry, pear, red apple, red grape, peppercorn, clove, rum, toasted oak, caramel, brown sugar, nuttiness, and toasted brown bread; with lighter notes of banana, oaken vanilla, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Moderate peppery yeast, rum/oak tannin spiciness; and light herbal/grassy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of raisin, plum, fig, cherry, pear, red apple, red grape, peppercorn, clove, rum, toasted oak, caramel, brown sugar, nuttiness, toasted brown bread, light banana/vanilla, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, rum/oak barrels, candi sugar, and bready malt flavors; with an awesome malt and yeast/oak spiciness balance; with zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from yeast/oak spiciness and carbonation. Medium-high carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/grainy/sticky/tannic, and fairly crisp balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 10.5%. Overall this is a fantastic barrel aged Belgian strong dark ale. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, rum/oak barrels, candi sugar, and bready malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and easy to drink for the big ABV; with the modestly spicy/tannic/drying finish. Awesome balance of yeast complexity and malts/sugars as usual; the oak is very prominent, but not overwhelming. A highly enjoyable offering, and spot on style example as expected. Did not prefer it over the base beer, but still a wonderful experience.

Wow, much more pungent than the regular Grande Reserve. Loads more banana and nail varnish, and something fruity reminiscent of them fruit salad liquorice sweets. Very smooth. A really well rounded beer. Very fruity aftertaste.

Easily the best Quad style beer I've ever had. Pisses all over Westy 12.

Wow this one is a beast. The rum barrel is very pronounced to the point that it burns a little. Fils out body and then some. The smell is traditional beligan strong dark with rum soak oak chips added. Taste is a boozy bomb.

From Tercertiempocervezas. In La Trappe chalice. Playing Avernum 2. The rum barreling doesnt seem to improve it but just the opposite: it flattens it, making it lose its delicious belgian strong dark ale profile and replacing it with an alcoholic one

A 375ml corked and caged bottle, bottled on 10th August 2017, with a best before date of end of 2022. Poured into a Chimay goblet glass. I always thought of the Chimay Grande Réserve and thus also it’s barrel variants to be a Belgian Quad, but it appears most sites list it as a Belgian Strong Dark Ale, so that’s what I’m going to do. Not going to debate this or differentiate the styles as a simple search will show many threads.

Appearance: A slightly hazy dark amber brown colour with a half finger beige head that dissipated quickly to a replenishing ring around the glass, while leaving some nice lacing.

Aroma: Light to moderately sweet, dark fruit, plum, prunes, oak, coconut, vanilla, with notes of rum.

Taste: Sweet malt, dark fruit, plum, prunes, grapes, fig, raisin, toasted oak, toasted bread, brown sugar, clove, vanilla, rum, light booziness.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied, with moderate carbonation.

Overall: Nice, complex and enjoyable, but not as good as the base beer in my opinion. I think it’s partly because rum is not one of my favoured liquors.
