Was waiting in a 2.5 hour line to try Kate the Great down the road. So a bunch of us tagged teamed to get a bite of lunch before getting into the the Portsmouth Brewery (just down the street).

The venue has as much atmostphere, charm as any pub I can imagine. It used to be a very upscale bank, with high vaulted glass ceiling, and 2 vault doors paired along the back wall. Perhaps it lacks a bit of warmth, but it is a very cool place, and should be visited.

Their beer tap selection is top notch, and include several craft brews from Smuttynose, Redhook, and others.

Had a real Irish waitress. Knowledgable, but a bit cold/terse.

I had a RiRa burger, and at half off, was a considerable bargain for 4.75 (cheaper than our small 8 oz glass of craft beer). It was a very good burger, and I was quite full afterwards.

Definitely would recommend visiting. And I hope to be back.

I was up in Portsmouth this weekend and stopped by RiRa for an afternoon pint. This place was really easy to find as it is located in the center of Market Square.

Upon entering I noticed the high ceilings with a long wooden bar to left. There is also plenty of tables for dining. The atmosphere has a modern Irish pub feel. I didn't try the food here because I had just ate before arriving.

I thought the beer selection here was solid and appears to have improved based on the previous BA reviews. Specifically, you can expect about 18 or so taps, with 4 Guinness handles. Draft highlights included Smuttynose Big Beer Series & Pumpkin Ale, Lagunitas IPA, Long Trail Harvest, Harpoon UFO, Switchback, Harp, Weihenstephaner, etc. You can order a "wooden paddle" that allows you to choose 4 samples.

They offer about 60 bottles or so with options like Duvel, Unibroue La Fin Du Monde, Victory Golden Monkey, Allagash Four, DFH 60 & 90 Minute IPA, Stone IPA, Rogue Dead Guy Ale, Old Thumper and Hazed & Infused.

Service was good and prices reasonable. Yet another viable bar option in downtown Portsmouth.

Ok, this place had lots of taps, and most of them were borderline good, but I didn't see a single one that implied that they were ready to risk having a real craft beer.
The crowd ranged between "yah bros" holding Heineken bottles at a right angle and older ladies consuming wine at a slow pace. I don't really see a reason for this to be listed on here, or to return, as the niche for a British pub is covered by Coat of Arms, and the borderline good beers are offered at most other bars around town.

Lots of DBs at the bar, standing with the backs to the bar, drinking Heineken, not willing to move to let someone else order- yay.

The Portsmouth RiRa has been open for several months now, and is a fun place (although I've only been there in the day time). Located in busy Market Square in downtown Portsmouth, it's located in an old bank building. I think the designers came up with a very imaginative use of the building.
Up a couple stairs, the main room is the bar, with seating at the bar and at a few tables. Lots of dark wood, but very light thanks to a high domed ceiling. The ubiquitous TVs over the bar. To the right of the main room is a large dining room. At the back of the main room, where the vault used to be, is additional seating, both downstairs and upstairs. Not too much in the way of decor. The furnishings are all heavy dark wood. It's a lively place to be, even in the daylight hours.
I counted 15 beers on tap and 32 bottles on the beer list. Typical Irish and British imports, and a good number of New England craft beers. Yes, they can pour the perfect pint og Guinness.
The food is also good. They have what I would consider an innovative Sunday brunch. Service can be a little slow at times, but is still good.
A fun place to go.
