Maybe it's the black label that leads to darker expectations, but it's a brown amber color, slightly hazy. Long aromatic scent of roasted grain and caramel candy. Attractive swirly foam in the tall glass.

Plenty strong though not tasting of alcohol. This is more like a winter ale with plenty of roasted grain and a spicy undertone. Hops are quite understated, though there is a moderate bitter burn. The touch of Belgian yeastiness doesn't bloom into the dry intensity. Barely any sediment. A little hot at the finish just before your tongue goes numb.

Rather pleasant sipping beer. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Wine World and Spirits in north Seattle.

Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a medium red amber with a half finger very light tan head that dissipates slowly into a thin film with light lacing. Aroma of grapes, plums, sweet malt; spicy. Flavor is dark fruit, especially figs, molasses, roasted malt and lighter unidentifiable fruit. Finishes with roasted malt, chocolate and hop bitterness. Flavors are all over the place. An interesting dark ale, but hard to categorize.

Poured from 22oz bomber into a tulip.

Appearance: deep amber-brown hue with a bit of haze to the body. Head pours a thin finger of frothy tan foam. Decent.

Smell: malty aroma with a good dark-fruit component and a fair hit of alcoholic fruitiness. Unfortunately, overall intensity is a bit light. Still, the composition works for me.

Taste: dark fruit, tobacco and phenolic compounds abound. Alcohol bite is also present. Stylistically not too bad, but kind of messy.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good level of carbonation and a good creaminess. I like it.

Overall: this beer seems a little bit messy and unfinished, but I like a lot of the flavor and aroma compounds in it. A bit more care in crafting might do this beer wonders.

Purchased at the COOP last night.. Poured into my goblet tonight.. deeep amber/walnut brew.. nice clarity and a decent dark tan head that doesn't really leave any lacing or retention.

Nose is mainly dark malts and coffee.. not getting much in the way of a BSDA... I guess some minor clovey notes .. but NOTHING honestly Belgian.

Dark malt and a bit of tobacco.. cocoa.. soy.. Nothing... NOTHING Belgian.. Lighter body for a bigger ABV brew.. but nothing comes out in the supposed yeasty elements...

I could see this as a Belgian Stout IF a Belgian yeast was allowed to do it's damage.. but this is a pretty poor attempt at anything with a "Belgian" tag.

Funny.. The body/carbonation are about right for a BSDA.. but otherwise this is a big ole watery over carbonated porter...

Christ... I feel bad for this review... Honestly.

First review 8/18/2011 3.15

A: Poured a burgundy color with good carbonation leaving a nice dirty white cap

S: Dark fruits, sweet sugar, light booze

T: Starts off with a dark fruit element; plums, hint of raisins, some caramel perhaps, but the taste quickly fades and it becomes sordove syrupy and boring

M: Medium to big body, sweet, sticky but lacking in complexity and nothing to make it shine

O: Not to bad and worth a drink
///

2011 vintage sampled today via Red Hot-Tacoma

A: Poured a deep brownish with purple hues, small dirty white cap, some bubbles and minimal lacing

S: Purple/red rapes, candy sugar, figs and plums. Very pleasant.

T: This beer really mellowed out over a year. Dark fruits remain dominant and prominent; grapes, figs, some caramel and plums with residual candy sugar are the highlights. A little booze and spice sting lingers throughout but it also has a smooth creaminess to it. The finish has a light sugary element.

M: Bigger bodied, sweet and sugar, plenty of dark fruits coat the palate

O: I believe this beer needed some time to work itself out. It's pretty good, still a little messy and think it could go for another year or two!

Served in tulip. Poured a nice reddish brown, a bit hazy/cloudy and had a half-inch of off-white head that had low retention and light lacing.

The aroma was solidly grainy with some nice spicy notes. The flavors were similar, but yeasty spice was more upfront and the grain slid into the background.

The body was full, smooth and well-rounded. Drinkability was pretty good, the beer went down smooth and easy and I could see having a couple (or more) of these at a sitting. Overall, a pretty nice brew that's worth your time if you see it in the Puget sound region.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #86 (Mar 2014):

Sweet, Warming, Medicinal

We’re always going to be skeptical of American brewers jumping knee-deep into Belgian territory, but Odin Brewing Co. seems to have a firm grasp on what the Belgian Strong Dark Ale is and can be. The 9% ABV is warming, but doesn’t get hot at all. It’s full of dark sugars and fruit, with a healthy dose of medicinal phenols and suggestions of licorice root, chicory and carob.

I agree with the other reviewers that this is pretty decent but does not make you want to trade any Belgian beers or even Unibroue for it. I loved Odin's Kolsch as not many make it as well in the PNW but I felt that this beer was a little one dimensional and a little too dry to really work for this demanding style. Drinkable but not memorable.

Pours dark honey with copper when lit, then there's a fleeting etched surface of light tan foam. Really light and flat looking for the style. Smells initially like the inside of an empty black olives can, then some sweet malt, a little bit of banana - not a particularly enjoyable nose. Flavor is booze, bitter, sweet malts, some banana, really boozey and chemical. Thin and lowly carbed for the style. This is not really firing on many/any cylinder for the style.
