2004 Vintage from Foudre 132, bottle 006522.

Served in a lambic basket at Kulminator.

I first had this elusive beast back in 2012 at the very same place.

It crystal clear brownish-copper red, not unlike bourbon or tawny port. The nose has all the normal characteristics of a Flemish Red, but more well blended and refined. Oak and lactic acid make good friends. I

t remains lightly carbonated, but without the whisper of a head.

It still has legs in the glass. Mouthfeel is light; taste is mildly acidic with no hint of hop. A delicate sweetness is present throughout, losing out to the sour notes only at the back of the mouth. Again, despite its strength this is smooth and warming…almost a comfort beer for fans of the style.

Still an amazing beer some 19+ years after bottling.

Recommended.

T: cherry, pomegranate, funk, leather, oak, slight oxidation from age and care.
F: light to moderate body, flat and oxidized but can still sense original characteristics trying to unfold
O: fun to try a relic

I was wondering if I even would write a review of this beer, as it is a bottle I found in the corner of my cellar, completely forgotten and almost 10 years old. It turned ot to be more than worthy of a review.

First and for all this beer is flat, no head what so ever, if it wasn't for the pale amber colour you would say it's wine (hence the name). The nose is grains and apple vinegar. It's mainly acidity, with some fruits thrown in the mix, some apple, hints of peach. There are hints of oak.

I love this kind of beer, really refreshing. The closest beer relative is probably, the real acidic geuzes (like girardin fond) or even plain lambic, but white wine is also pretty close to it. This is a love it or hate it beer.

Obviously, this is a review of a aged version, keep that in mind.

375 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Flat, as expected. Clear deep golden amber body.

Smell - Vinegar and caramel malt. Smells a lot like Grand Cry, but stronger. Also has a brighter, kinda grainy aroma.

Taste - That grainy flavor is very faint up front and it's gone. Malt and light cherry flavor. Woody. Vinegar and sourness build into the finish with a sharp sour spike.

Mouthfeel - Flat, but it isn't a problem. Has a little tingle from the wood. Medium body.

Overall - Has a lot of similarities with other Rodenbachs, but enough differences to make it a very interesting beer.

2004 bottle. Poured from the 375ml bottle into a large wine glass.

Clear golden-orange-red-brown, low carbonation, zero head; doesn't look like most beer, but nothing wrong with that. Really catches the light and looks good in the glass.

Smells quite unusual. Honey, grape/wine, toast, light vinegar, hints of flowers. General impression of agedness, but no overt oxidized character.

Tastes good. Medium level of vinegar tartness balanced by a bare touch of malty sweetness. Delicious vinous and dried fruit flavors, along with toast, malt, honey. Medium length tangy finish, vinegar and a bit of iron.

Low carbonation, but surprisingly sufficient. The bubble ares exceedingly tiny. Good tingly acidity.

Never tried it fresh, but in any case it's drinking quite well right now.

Very glad to get the chance to try this. Thanks for the bottle, Daniel!!!

Purchased bottle 363 (Foeder 132) at Den Gulzigen Bok (Gluttonous Goat) in Vurste, East Flanders for 6 euro.

A: clean, clear, light rosy-brown, more like lambic in head
S: full lactic lambic nose, vanilla with oak aging
T: barrel aged, almost oude gueze-like, vanilla with oak
M: clean, crisp, mild to medium sour, oak noticeable with woody earthiness
O: very good beer with oak, musty, vanilla
