Been sitting on this for a bit and I guess now is the time.
7 years old really smooth Flanders out. Still holds all the good characters of fruit and tart, but just softer and much smoother. It's really nice,
Head is kinda' small and the color brownish and largely clear. Body seems moderately light and maybe age has reduced the carbonation some.
The aroma is a little tame. Soft tart with some oak and the fruit is in the background. The oak is more woody than vanilla.
A little funk in the taste, but it is really balanced with everything else. There is so much going on in each drink. What a pleasure.

Gorgeous burgundy hue, a rich lavender, a rosy raspberry…with a slim, pinkish head atop. Very clouded. Looks utterly inviting, lovely as can be.

Aroma: Ah! Wow. Mmmm. Ripe raspberries meet mature cherries, under the fog of funky Belgian yeast. Tart, and sweet, and so tempting. I honestly and truly don't want to take my nose away from it. A lambic like no other. Complex, indeed. And, now to drink it…

Taste: on the lips…sublime. Incredible depth of flavor, large oak effects, delicious fruit factor. Lacks the sharpness and acidity in fresher red ales/ sours, whatever we call them these days. So rounded, so mellow, so groovy. (You know, that's going to become a regular thing in my vocabulary.) There's still plenty of sour snap, lots of zest, very vibrant funky kick, lush fruit…so tasty. So robust, so complex, deep …pretty near impossible to really encapsulate with mere words alone. If I could paint it for you? Animate it for you? Do an interpretive dance? Spin some poetry…perchance?

I went and rhymed again. So sue me. (Worse, it's bad, and trite. And forced. Ah, forget it.)

Medium-bodied, fullest of flavor. Long lasting tartness on the tongue. Gets more complex, with tannin-type feeling on the palate. Wow, I say again. Damn, this is deliciousness. A mellifluous mix of wine-like flavors, lambic sour and sweet, fruit flavors above and beyond, with an unheard-of depth and complexity.

Bottle: Poured a hazy brown reddish color ale with a medium size foamy head with average retention and some lacing. Aroma of oak is well balance by sweet cherries and tart notes. Taste is actually lighter then the Grand Cru with more notes of cherry and a sweeter profile. Oak notes are easily distinguishable with the tart notes also quite enjoyable. Body is about average with good carbonation and alcohol is well hidden. Very well made and not much to be improved.

Presentation: Same presentation as the regular Rodenbach, 750ml caged and corked, with the exception of the foil over the top of the cork and cage. No other dates or stamps on the bottle.

Appearance: Cloudy amber color with a tint of gold. A nearly nonexistent head clings to the edges of the glass.

Aroma: Definite acetic punch up front with notes of cherries and dates.

Taste: Nice tart cherry flavor with a pronounced acetic acidity, Very light sweet malt body barely shines through with a lingering dry and sour finish with hints of oak. This beer is drier and more tart than the Grand Cru.

Mouthfeel: I thought the carbonation was going to be on the low side due to the less than enthusiastic pop the cork made, but it is moderately carbonated. The mouthfeel is right on with this beer, it's body is very balanced between the acidity and the light sweetness.

Notes: This is an amazing beer. I definitely like it more than the Grand Cru mainly because it is drier and more tart. The balance is the star of the beer without the sweet or the sour being too strong either way. Wouldn't mind finding a bottle of the 08 vintage to try, but at over twice the price of the Grand Cru, this is definitely a special occasion beer. Happy New Year!

Foeder 230; Sampled June 2010
A vigorous pour into my large Tripel Karmeliet tulip produces a dense, long lasting, light amber tinged, tan colored head. The beer is a deep plum color that shows a brilliantly clear, ruby red color when held up to the light. The aroma reminds me of a tart, fruity red wine, at least from a distance as I visually inspect the beer. A clean acetic acid note, without the sharp spiciness that sometimes accompanies this acid, is just about the dominant note here. It is anchored by a fruitiness that reminds me of concentrated apples, cherries and the afore-mentioned red grapes (along with some berry-esque aromatics). Oak aromatics add some woody aromatics, a spiciness to the finish (that is faintly reminiscent of a barrel aged spirit). A long draft of the aroma yields some toasted malt aromas that reminds me of browned bread crust and whole grain crackers, this couples in the long finish with a bright, though soft cherry-like note.

Lightly sweet tasting up front and this sweetness remains through to the finish; the beer is perhaps a little sweeter than I was expecting, though it is not entirely unexpected. The sourness is quite light for something designated as a special vintage (at least with the direction I would have gone if I was the brewer) and in fact doesn't wholly balance the sweetness. While this is a bit sweet, it is definitely only lightly so in the grand scheme of things. The sweetness, coupled with the light acetic notes, brings out some cherry-like fruitiness in the flavor as well as a general berry like character; when coupled with the oak it reminds me a little bit of a super-fruity red wine. Speaking of oak, this is actually a lot lighter in the flavor than it is in the aroma, which also perhaps makes the light sweetness more noticeable. The oak contributes light flavors of fresh cut planks, subtly peppery spiciness, perhaps a suggestion of vanillin as well as some tannic astringency and textural interest. The body of this beer is light enough to be quaffable beyond what the 7% abv would suggest, but does have some viscous body to it. As the beer warms a toasty malt character comes out towards the finish and there is also an underlying caramelized malt character that is a large part of the perceived sweetness.

My second pour of this sees me noticing a touch of musty funkiness in the aroma and perhaps a touch of ripe cheese character, but these are quite subtle and the flavor doesn't' really change much (given that this is brilliantly clear down to the bottom of the bottle this isn't much of a surprise).

This is a touch more simplistic than I might prefer, but it is still a fantastically tasty beer that I am quite happy to be drinking a 750ml bottle of. Very clean, perhaps a bit too "filtered", but still this is quite enjoyable; the filtering perhaps even adds to the refined effect that this beer achieves (even if I prefer a bit more rusticity). The aroma promises a bit more than the flavor delivers, but in the end the intangibles bring this to a higher level than the individual components seem to warrant.

Opaque colour,with a reddish tinge, white bubby head. Fruity aromas, this is a flanders red that is clearly cherry and is balanced as a wine would be. Very lacey sheets. The carbonation i right there. Very drinkable. A bit of apple cider vinger that makes it even more cherryish.

Served in a Darkness snifter. Beer is brown, darker than I assumed it would be, soft white head, moderate carbonation, some lacing, head doesn't stick around though. Looks like beer.

Aroma is great, citric and lactic, mild acetic, some oakiness funk. Smells great.

Beer tastes great too, thin on the palate, mouthfeel is creamy though. Lots of great complex sourness throughout the palate though. Wonderful. The lactic and the oak are later than the brightness of the citric and mild acetic. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Well, here I am with my 900th review on BA. Shame I'm over the other side of the world to my regular beer-drinking buddies @LaitueGonflable and @tobeerornottobe, who shared my 800th review with me. I'm sure I'll enjoy it in their honour.

Bottle purchased for a reasonably steep price for the USA, from Healthy Spirits in San Francisco. 750ml, corked, caged and foil capped, although the cork pops with minimal effort given that it has no depth to it whatsoever.

Pours a very pleasant and very genuine red colour, deep but supple, like a light pinot noir. Head is persistent, but filmy, a slight off-white cream sitting atop the beer and leaving a slightly amorphous lacing as the beer is drunk. Light body with some fairly decent carbonation. Looks very decent.

Nose is very similar to their Grand Cru. Big notes of maraschino, funk, oak barrels and a slight grappa bite. Fumbling notes of kriek as well. It's that classically unique Flanders Red Ale aroma, suggesting big astringent acidity to come on the palate, but with a huge depth to everything as well. Lovely beer.

Taste is... excellent. At first, I was slightly taken aback by the lack of the truly cutting acidity, but this is like mellowing the characters of a great Red Ale, refining them, polishing them and making them into an artisanal item. Absolutely lovely blend of slightly tart acidity, cherry sweetness, rounded Belgian yeast and a pleasant lingering astringency. Palate is extremely long, and benevolently complex, leaving layer after layer of exceptional characters. Dusty and tart on the back, sweet and luscious on the front.

Feel is clear and light, but lending enough body to extend the palate for a long time. It allows it to express the flavours on the palate beautifully, while remaining light enough to accentuate the subtle acidity.

This is a truly remarkable and truly excellent beer. It is the more polished and refined version of their Grand Cru. Everything is just integrated perfectly into this subtle and seductive whole, giving an all-round beer experience which is exquisite.

An exceptional brew from some Belgian master craftsmen.

With so much maturation and refinement, Rodenbach has selected a masterful barrel for their Vintage '07 release. Now four years in the bottle and now in my belly, this barrel exhibits a smoother, more rounded and less astringent character than even the world class Grand Cru.

Pouring a tawny ruby-brown color and with crimson highlights, the beer shows nearly perfect clarity until the finishing pour which disturbs the sediment. Finely knit bubbles for a thin sheet of foam with very good staying power that once again errupts with a gentle swirl of the flute. Low on lace, the acidity of the beer eventually prohibits the head character to this small extent.

Savory aromas of balsamic vinegar, apple cider, black cherries, and oak all braid together in a decadent rich scent that's backed by sun-kissed malt, mild chocolate, bread crust, and oily nuts. Tart and rich all at the same time.

The sweet and sour interplay plays most prominantly on the palate as the malty rich flavor of chocolate, fruity sweetness, and rich walnut provide the base flavor to anchor the ale. Fruity acidity is lead by tart cherries, and followed by crabapples, cider, under-rippened berries, limes, and vinegar. Aged notes of leather, must, brine, balsamic, and soy sauce gives a regal maculinity to the beer that tempers the otherwise brash sourness. Low in bitterness, the beer relies on the sour to balance the sweetness and does so with low phenolics and complementary esters.

Medium to start, the body delivers perhaps a richer impression than is actual because of precieved fruit sweetness and chocolate. But the mid palate develops from malt richness and into dry tartness that proves refreshing and palate cleansing. Mildly astringent, the beer keeps all the surfaces of the mouth guessing. A linger of balsamic vinegar and chocolate covered cherries leave lasting impressions in aftertaste.

This is an absolute gem of a beer. Rodenbach's Grand Cru is my top ranked Sour Ale and this Vintage (Barrel 230) might be better than that.

750 ml. bottle. Pours a brown reddish colour with almost no head. Smell of cherries, cider and apples, vanilla or maybe cinnamon. I can't smell oak or sourness. Good body, sticky palate. Taste of cherries and cider. Again, I would have expected much sourness here. And more complexity.

A gentle pour results in a wispy skim across the surface, that looks like a smudge of cirrus clouds. Some spotty bits of lace randomly dot the sides of the glass. Decent retention. The body is a lighter shade of brown, that glints ruby in the sunlight. Clarity is ok, you can see the underside of the surface bubbles through the glass.

Savory aroma of black cherry, red wine grapes, minerals, leather, and balsamic vinegar. Really nice, and I find myself inhaling deeply before every sip.

Tannic and fruity, notes of apple butter, cherry skins, tart grapes, with a lingering taste of oak and vague maltiness. Tart and acetic, though rather mellow and well integrated. Definitely more mellow than the Grand Cru, and more savory. Full and rich despite the lower levels of carbonation. I could easily put away a 750 of this with ease... one to be savored.

I picked this beer up at Hop City in Atlanta. They had at least a few more bottles of this beer on the shelf if one is interested. I know I was. This find came on the heels of my having a glass of Rodenbach 2008 on tap at the Brick Store the day before, so this is great! Here we go:

Appearance: Pours a deep clear red to garnet color with a small 1/4" head of tan bubbles on top that were quite fizzy and active. They were receding within about 30 seconds, but was leaving a solid contour where it met the glass, so there must be quite a few bubbles rising to maintain the head, but the beer is pretty dark, so you can't really tell visually.

Aroma: There was a ton of dry sweet/tart cherries in the aroma initially along with a defined dark toffee presence. As the beer sits some, the cherries are getting even stronger. As the beer starts to warm up some, the aroma is getting a bit more earthy and I can start picking up the Lambic horse blanket, which isn't a bad thing.

Taste: The flavor in this beer is fantastic! It is medium bodied with ample carbonation and plenty of mouthfeel. There is caramel galore along with the unmistakable cherries in both sweet and sour. There is some vanilla from the wood that is noticeable along with some dry notes from the same. The finish is owned by the sweetness, but the fruitiness, attenuation, carbonation, and very mild dark malt presence are the only things to challenge the malt. There may be zero hops in here for all I can tell. After making it about half-way through this 750mL bottle, I am starting to warm up a little, but this is the only indication that this beer is 7%. I can't pick it up over the host of other flavors.

Opinion: This beer is incredible. I absolutely love this style, and Rodenback is the Cadillac of the Flanders Red. I don't know what more I can say? If you like this style and are fortunate enough to find this vintage, get it! You won't be disappointed.

Shared with a friend, and poured into two tulip glasses. Reddish color with a fair head retention. Smells deliciously sour, with many fruit notes. Tastes very fruity, with cranberries, pears, and apples alternating presence. The oak barrels takes away some of the sourness, and the age hides the bite making this an extremely smooth beer that drinks like juice. Absolutely loved this beer and will buy the remaining 2 bottles at my local store.

Have been cellaring this one for a little while, and felt that it should be enjoyed before it got too close to it's due date.

Pours with a short cream brown colored head over a dirty amber to brown body.

Aromas are classic for the style - lots of oaky and vinous tannins, rich red grapes, and brown sugar sweetness.

Flavors are full of grape juice, oak, juicy fruit gum, just a touch of vinegar and earthy dirtyness. It falls on the sweeter side of the style, without being too sour.

Very little carbonation creates a smooth mouthfeel, but is held in check by the juicy tartness.

I would recommend letting this one breathe for a good 15-20 minutes before tasting, as I enjoyed it much more after it sat for a bit.

Batch 230, 2007.

Poured into a tulip.
Dark ruby color, clear, with a two finger, reasonably long lasting light tan head.
Aroma is lightly tart, fruity.
Medium bodied, very refreshing, but just like the aroma, light tart and acidic.
The aging, at least compared to original versions of Rodenbach Grand Cru took away some of the lively carbonation, and mellowed the flavors quite a bit. It is easy to drink, pleasant and tasty, but it lacks that bite, that more intense sourness that attracted me to the original in the first place.
Not bad at all, but worse and more expensive than the original.

Looks reddish brown with a thin white creamy head. Smells of sour cherries, worscestershire sauce, vanilla, and honey. Daddy like! Taste follows suit, with cherries and slight worcestershire, cranberry juice, and a definite oak note. Very very balanced, very good blending of flavors. Mouthfeel is slick and surprisingly carbonated. Drinkability is great. This bottle will go down easy. Expensive, hard to find, and worth it. The best kind of beer, in a way :)

750 ml bottle poured into a fluted wine glass, 2007 vintage Rodenbach is brown with an off-white head that leaves scattered lace.

Smell is awesome, big fruitiness, with a tinge of acidity singeing the nostrils, very bright passionfruit.

Taste is great, classic rodenbach fruitiness, nice balance of the tartness without being too vinegary or oaky. Reminds me a lot of the Grand Cru, which would what I'd guess this was if tasting blindly. This has always been my favorite brewery, and vat #230 continues the unassailable standard of excellence.

Mouthfeel is a bit oily, dryingly acidic, medium to medium light bodied.

Drinkability is super high, expect for that it's a one-off beer that is rare and expensive. Given the choice, I can honestly see this being the only beer I drank.

The beer poured a dark crimson-amber color. Nearly crystal clear. A spotty film of large, tan colored bubbles topped the liquid, but they quickly dissipated.

The aroma was outstanding. Cherry pie notes came through strong. Lots of vanilla. Good dose of brown sugar and caramel malt sweetness. The sweetness played well again the moderately tart and acidic balsamic vinegar notes. Rich and robust. There was also an unexpected sweet, brandy-like character. Remarkably well balanced.

The flavor profile was very similar to the nose. Sweet up front with a rich, stiff, malty backbone. Strong vanilla notes. Vinous in the center. The beer drank more like a fruit-forward red wine than a "typical" beer. Strong sour cherry notes. Mild oak. Balsamic vinegar came through on the tart and moderately acidic finish. At 7% ABV, the alcohol was incredibly well buried.

The beer was medium bodied. Rich, frothy and creamy. The liquid contained a finely bubbled effervescence and it turned light and fluffy once it hit my palate.

All in all, this was the best Flanders red ale I have ever tried. The Rodenbach 2008 Vintage Oak Aged Ale I had recently was quite impressive but this was even better. Definitely grab a bottle or two if you can still find them sitting on shelves.
