Appearance: This beer pours a golden ruby color with a big head and lots of active carbonation bubbles.

Smell: The aroma is reserved in my limited experience with the style. However with a bit searching there was a little bit of tart cherries and grapes.

Taste: The taste is very sugary and yet tart. Much more tart than I had expected but I believe that was largely because of the carbonation that the tart seemed exaggerated. The bottle claimed that is was aged in oak for 18month. I had to use a lot of imagination to find an oak flavor. Overall it is good, but I believe I had too high of expectations. I was hoping for something that could compete with the Duchess.

Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel is hard to describe. The tartness brought on a pucker and stung the taste buds a bit and yet underneath the big fluffy crisp carbonation the beer had a medium light smooth body.

Drinkability: Despite being a bit different than I had expected this is a tasty beer that drinks very easily.

750mL (2011) into a tulip. Pours a clear mahogany brown w/ a 2-finger khaki head that hangs around, sustained by lively carb.

Aroma is bright and tart, vinous with plenty of oak.

Taste closely follows nose. Tart, bright, crisp, slightly vinous w/ dry oak and a lingering finish.

Mouthfeel is silky smooth, clean, dry. Carbonation is just right.

Overall this beer defines the style. Expertly crafted, exactly what it should be.

A - Muddy brown with a thin tan head that fades immediately.

S - Vinegar, acetic acid, tart fruits, plums, dark sour cherries. Complex but fairly simple at the same time.

T - Sour with sharp acetic notes, dark sour cherries followed by light sweet malt, red wine oaky tannins and more sour fruit.

M - Light side of medium mouthfeel with average carbonation and a lingering tartness.

D - Wonderfully complex and simple at the same time. Very easy to drink for a sour.

Pours a cloudy, darker copper with a rocky off-white head. Oak, cherries, sour yeast, an ethyl. All the Flemish sour tastes are there: cherries, funky yeast, oak. Nice blend with a sweeter malt which gives off a bit of a graham-cracker taste. Kind of like a very, very tart cherry pie with some funk. Thought this was better than their classic.

Rodenbach Grand Cru pours with 0.75 inches of thin, tan head that lasts about 30 seconds before ringing a Val Dieu chalice. The body is slightly cloudy and composed of a beautiful, deep ruby hue. Shades of brown and garnet distinguish this from the standard Rodenbach's already amazing red body. Thin lacing is always visible on the glass.

This beer is delightfully tart and bitter on the nose. Sharp, fruity flavors of sour green apples and raspberries appear early. Sherry vinegar is represented in a very powerful manner followed by a huge rush of yeasty funk. For the Flanders Red, this is defining beer in terms of smell.

A tart, flavorful rush of apple, raspberries and currants start this ale off on a very fruity wave. Almost immediately, the microflora and yeast profile explode with the textbook Flemish tartness. The tartness is so powerful that there is almost a burning sensation at the back of the mouth. This Grand Cru finishes incredibly long with a creamy vanilla and black cherry taste riding on the continuous yeast profile. This is the Flanders Red style at its best. Perfect.

Mouthfeel is highly carbonated, very spicy and viscous enough to coat the palate after each sip. The Flemish style is held constant by a huge tartness presence with each sip.

Drinkabiliy is good when the power and complexity of flavor is considered. Still, even with so much flavor it still manages to be refreshing. However, it is certainly a brew to be enjoyed slowly and one bottle is more than enough for one sitting. Definitely not an everyday beer and most likely the worst choice to introduce a novice to the style.

Overall, the leading Flanders Red available in the US.

Poured from a caged-and-corked 750mL bottle into my White Birch flute/tulip.

A resounding sonorous pop greets me as I ease the cork out. Aromas surge forth before I can even pour any liquid.

Dark auburn-tinged burgundy liquid with crimson/cerise highlights and an active light tan head that recedes to a thin layer of cream. Thick even sandy lacing coats the sides. Very thin oily legs.

Dark cherries, lemon and strawberries from afar - when you bring the liquid closer to your nose, the acidity picks up considerably. Tangy red-wine vinegar, light oaky wood notes, and a mild intermingling of young port with toasted malt round out the boquet.

Complex flavors - a wide range of acidity suggesting a variety of light vinegars (champagne, aged balsamic, rice wine), plum wine, and citrus and a bit of pit fruit. Brown sugar, malt syrup, and cola notes add sweetness, while the finish adds in bitterness and a wave of tannins. Perfectly blended.

Well carbonated, nearly medium-bodied, and moderately astringent.

Perfect with food, really nice on its own - similarly enjoyable to a good (if not a great) wine, but with much less alcohol.

While it's been a while since I've tried the original, I believe this is sweeter and more nuanced than the standard Rodenbach. Well worth seeking out if you enjoy the style as this is among the very best I've tried.

A- Pours a semi-opaque dark red with a creamy tan head.

S- Very fruity, lots of lemony citrus along with some cherry. Has an acidic, sour smell along with some yeast.

T- Great sour flavors, cherries, wine, citrus, and yeast. Light caramel malt is detectable in the background. A bit of an oaky, vanilla flavour as well.

M- Medium to full bodied, well-carbonated, has a crisp, smooth feel with a dry finish.

O- This basically epitomizes the Flanders Red style and is a great intro to sour beers. A must-try.

This green bomber was adorned with a silk-screened label, dull gold neck foil, wire cage, and cork, all combining to give the appearance of a package meant for a special occasion. The beer came out deep amber red in color, and had a slightly hazy appearance. The persistent head was one finger thick and the carbonation was light. The aroma of sour cherries and oak combined to form a wood glue like smell, which was quite mouthwatering (and no I don’t usually sniff glue). The taste was balsamic vinegar sour and somewhat spicy as well. Both of these tastes made for a very dry beer that demanded to be gently sipped and be paired with some food, so I pulled out some Irish cheddar cheese from the refrigerator to accompany it. The earthy sharp cheese cut out the peppery spiciness, but the sour flavor became even more accentuated. The oak aged notes were never quite detectable under the evident acidity. I found this to be quite drinkable, despite being very different than the hop bombs I always seem gravitate towards. The mouthfeel was naturally dry and the body was on the thin side due to a near absence of residual sugar. Not one I would order very often, although that being a deficiency in my character rather than that of this beer.

A - Deep mahogany with nice ruby highlights when held up to light. Thin bubbly light brwon head slowly fades. Leaves great lacing.

S - Deep aroma of sour grapes and cherries. Smells alot like a good port wine. Faint hint of oak as well.

T - Tart fruitiness with lots of dark fruit flavors coming through. Finishes a little sweet. Very complex flavors but not at all overwhelming.

M/D - Full bodied and excellent feel. Incredibly drinkable. Wow, I was about to give up on the crazy Belgian sours, but this one has me hooked.

In the minority here but I just was a little underwhelmed with this beer. Still a pretty good flanders red though. Aromas are standard for a world class sour but I personally am a little put off by the slight rum noses and flavors as well.
