Style: Flanders Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Flanders Red Ale- two-year ale matured in oak foeders, that is aged for an additional six months with cherries, raspberries and cranberries. Vinous and very complex with notes of wood and caramel.

The brewer allow the beer to macerate with fresh cherries, raspberries and cranberries. After this maceration in oak, the beer re-ferments in the bottle. The result is RODENBACH Caractère Rouge, an exceptional RODENBACH with fruit maceration and a 7% alcohol volume. The brew is more than unique and extremely exclusive, as only 900 75-cl bottles were produced (first batch). Geunes serves this wilful beer as part of his other unique range of beer varieties in his restaurant, ’t Zilte, at the Antwerp MAS museum.

I'll start off by saying I expected a little more due to the hype I guess. I enjoyed it, but not as much as I thought I would have.

It wasn't as sour as I expected, but on the positive side the acidity was low and the lecto wasn't crazy high (could be good or bad depending on what you're looking for). In my mind, I expected a bit more funk from the bugs and because of that, my rating is a bit lower than some others.

Fruits were very nice, deep reddish/purple hue is nice and the finish is pretty clean.

Overall, a solid hot Florida day sour that will quench your thirst due to it being very crisp with a small funk to keep it interesting.

Poured into a snifter it has a white pink ring head and a hazy amber brown body. Smell of lots of fresh cherry, fresh raspberry, slight tart cranberry, light biscuit malt, and some peach. Taste is almost all cherry juice and raspberry juice with cranberry tartness at the end some apple, and a bit of peach. Mouth feel is full and rich with a full body and a light but refreshing carbonation. The best tasting fruit beer I've had to date in terms of fruit (not beer).

A: Pours a cloudy reddish brown color with almost no head to speak of

S: Amazing bursts of tart cherries, raspberries, and cranberries with a light acetic acid touch. Very light vinegar, leathery tannins, and some oak come through as well. Quite dominated by the fruit, however

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with the tart cherries and cranberries and slowly works its way into the raspberries. The light acetic tartness underlies everything, along with some oak and tannins. The sweetness of the fruits rounds out the tartness quite a bit, although it is slightly puckering at first. Finishes with lingering tart notes and fruitiness

M: Medium bodied with moderate, spritzy carbonation. Slightly drying

O: I'm surprised at how much this focuses on the fruit, but I'm not complaining one single bit because it's fucking great. The lactic notes aren't overwhelming in any sense, and still let the base and fruitiness shine through in full color. Well worth the coin

Orange/brown beer with little head that vanished almost right away. The aroma is dominated by cherries, a sweet tea tartness with vanilla notes in the background. The taste is more lemony and acidic where all the flower notes dissipate, leaving room for a well balanced finish between sour and bitter. Pleasant carbonation. Incredibly refreshing, probably the most refreshing beer I've had so far! Very well made. Maybe I expected a bit more.
