Style: Flanders Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Flanders Red Ale-vinous with a very complex, fruity nose of raspberry and cherry combined with notes of wood and caramel.

The brewer allow the beer to macerate with fresh cherries, raspberries and cranberries. After this maceration in oak, the beer re-ferments in the bottle. The result is RODENBACH Caractère Rouge, an exceptional RODENBACH with fruit maceration and a 7% alcohol volume. The brew is more than unique and extremely exclusive, as only 900 75-cl bottles were produced (first batch). Geunes serves this wilful beer as part of his other unique range of beer varieties in his restaurant, ’t Zilte, at the Antwerp MAS museum.

Purchased from the Beer Temple in Chicago, and openned the day before Easter in 2016. This beer has a deep, burnt red hue with decent head that slowly fades out. In some aspects it reminds me of New Glarus's Raspberry Tart or Belgian Red with the sweetness dialed back significantly and paired with a counterbalance of sourness. Definitely a lot going on in the flavor profile levels with incoming waves of smooth sweet, then sour, followed by bitter. I don't know if I would go searching for another bottle but it was very interesting and worth a try if you have not before.

Bought September 4, 2015 at Systembolaget Sweden and has been resting in my beercellar for seven months.

The beer pours beautifully in the glass with a dark red-brown "oak" - color. Hazy with a thin head.

Nose: Soft, sweet, tart nose of cherry, ripe apple, prune, oak, vanilla, raspberry and earthy yeast. I’m in love!
Taste: Ooooohh! So good! Raspberry, cherry, green apple, lemon, red berries, vinegar, oak and cranberry. Fantastic!
Mouth-feel: Full body. High but smooth carbonation. Sour, tart mouth with a great dry ending. Complex structure.

Conclusion: This is a beer of a lifetime! Totally blow my mind! So complex, tart, funky, smooth, sour, sweet.... well it’s LIFE!
Happiness and love in a bottle!

In this totally rush of life itself have to put down this review... It’s not easy but somebody has to do it...

Bottle: Poured a deep reddish color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of rich cherry notes with plenty of oak notes and some tart notes with some light residual sugar notes. Taste is a perfect mix of fresh cherry notes with some tart notes and oak with some residual sugar notes. Body is full with great carbonation.

The bottle was probably at least a few years old at this point. Lots of head and lacing. Smell and taste are both wonderfully integrated fruit with the cherries coming out stronger than the rest but it's pretty much the perfect amount of fruit (not overpowering) on top of a great base Flanders. Probably the best Flanders I've ever had.

Pours a rich ruby red, very little head with the thinnest of lacing. Lots of sparkling carbonation. Aroma has lots of tart cherry & raspberry along with distant oak & earthy yeast. Undertones of grape must and strawberry. Tart upfront, but not a lactic / vinegar sourness, but prickly fruit tartness. Notes are primarily tart cherry with some of the other fruit notes lingering as well. Oak is very present as well, but it helps undercut some of the tartness which in turn compliments some of the earthier notes. Overall it is one of the best sour fruit beers you can find, bursting with interlacing flavors, and finishes clean & delicately.
