Style: Flanders Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Flanders Red Ale-vinous with a very complex, fruity nose of raspberry and cherry combined with notes of wood and caramel.

The brewer allow the beer to macerate with fresh cherries, raspberries and cranberries. After this maceration in oak, the beer re-ferments in the bottle. The result is RODENBACH Caractère Rouge, an exceptional RODENBACH with fruit maceration and a 7% alcohol volume. The brew is more than unique and extremely exclusive, as only 900 75-cl bottles were produced (first batch). Geunes serves this wilful beer as part of his other unique range of beer varieties in his restaurant, ’t Zilte, at the Antwerp MAS museum.

L - frothy, murky brownish orange hue.

S - salty, acidic, sour. Fruity salt water taffy. Lots of cherries.

T - Sour berries. Watery fruit... think watermelon but with berries. Again, acidic. Tart but not sour. Some oak. Light vanilla. Cranberry sauce.

M - fizzy and heavily carbonated. Astringent.

O - pretty good. Not sure about $23/bomber again good or not but good at least once.

Poured into a snifter. Bottle dated 23 02 18 with 03-15 on cork.

3.75 A: Ruddy plum color. Less than a 1/2 finger of head forms with an aggressive pour. No real lacing is left.

3.75 S: Sweet and fruity. Not a whole lot of funk or acid. Cherries and cranberries stand out brightest. The raspberry is a bit more subdued underneath. Tons of vanilla and oak. Biscuity malts with some breadiness and a hint of graininess.

3.75 T: Like the nose, the fruits are the focus. The raspberry joins the cherry and cranberry in strength. Tart, but more so from the fruits than from the bacteria. It's definitely not puckering. Just a touch of woody funkiness. Again there lots of vanilla and oak, with just a hint of tannic astringency. Malts are mostly neutral with bready aftertaste.

3.75 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation that gives it a pleasant fluffiness. Lightly creamy and super smooth with a woody finish.

3.75 D: Definitely a solid beer, but I don't know that I understand the hype. Great fruity taste, but not overly impressive in the funk column.

Tried this next to Alexander out of the bottle and actually liked it a little bit better. Raspberries come through with a sour/sweet taste. Neither was overpowering.

$ 23.15 (Including Beer Club discount and tax)/750 mL bottle ($ 0.911/oz) at State Line Liquors, Elkton, MD.
Cork and cage bottle dated 21 02 18 at 42 degrees into a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Opens with a resounding “POP”. There is no foaming. Served between 45 -54 degrees.
Aroma – definite raspberries and cherries. As the brew warms, the aromas mull into a nonspecific berriness.
Head average (Maximum 3.7 cm, aggressive pour), tan with a pinkish cast, fizzy and dense, rapidly diminishing to a three mm ring and thin partial layer.
Lacing – none.
Body – a muddy brown with reddish tinges. Bottle conditioned so OK.
Flavor – Begins slightly sweet with the cherries and raspberries predominating. Ends with some cranberry and oak tartness.
Palate – light, dry, lively carbonation.
I believe I’ve mentioned before that the only berries of which I am a fan are cran and blue. Normally I find raspberries too sweet and I just don’t like the taste (or all the stinking little seeds). However, since this was a Rodenbach product, I figured it would be pretty good. It is. I could drink this all day.

Appearance 4, Aroma 4.5, Flavor 4.5, Palate 4.5, Overall, 4.5.

Reddish color with a very pleasant aroma of fruit. No hint of alcohol. Certinly carbonated which became more pleasant to the taste after it had sat for a few minutes. Wonderful fruit flavor that got better with each taste.
