Style: Flanders Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Flanders Red Ale- two-year ale matured in oak foeders, that is aged for an additional six months with cherries, raspberries and cranberries. Vinous and very complex with notes of wood and caramel.

The brewer allow the beer to macerate with fresh cherries, raspberries and cranberries. After this maceration in oak, the beer re-ferments in the bottle. The result is RODENBACH Caractère Rouge, an exceptional RODENBACH with fruit maceration and a 7% alcohol volume. The brew is more than unique and extremely exclusive, as only 900 75-cl bottles were produced (first batch). Geunes serves this wilful beer as part of his other unique range of beer varieties in his restaurant, ’t Zilte, at the Antwerp MAS museum.

Wow, what a great Red Ale! A lovely rose colored beer with a one inch head that quickly settles to almost nothing. Just a little lacing left for the side of the glass as you drink. I get a lot of Raspberry in the nose with some of the earthy notes. The taste is fruity and tart but super smooth with a slight finish of the sour. An excellent well balanced beer. Even at the high price commanded by its rarity it is a beer that I would recommend trying.

Vintage 2013.

Pours rusty brown. A fizzy tan head forms and quickly disappears completely. The smell is of barnyard funk, mixed dark fruit, oak and brown sugar. The taste is of tart cherries with notes of raspberry, oak and subtle malt sweetness. Moderately tart, medium texture with medium carbonation. Very good.

A 750ml corked and caged bottle with a best before date of 19th May 2017. Poured into a Cantillon ballon glass.

Appearance: A dark ruby red colour with a half finger off white head that dissipated quickly and left some sparse lacing.

Aroma: Berry fruit forward, lightly sweet with raspberry, cherry and cranberry. Finish is lightly tart with earthy oakiness.

Taste: Great balance of tart, lightly sour and lightly sweet, with raspberry, cherry and cranberry followed by some nice light oak woodiness.

Mouthfeel: Dry-ish, medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Overall: This is just really good. Nicely balanced, smooth and very fruity. I could drink this all day. Even though this particular bottle was nearing its best before date, it felt as if it would still be good to drink over the next few years.

L - frothy, murky brownish orange hue.

S - salty, acidic, sour. Fruity salt water taffy. Lots of cherries.

T - Sour berries. Watery fruit... think watermelon but with berries. Again, acidic. Tart but not sour. Some oak. Light vanilla. Cranberry sauce.

M - fizzy and heavily carbonated. Astringent.

O - pretty good. Not sure about $23/bomber again good or not but good at least once.

Poured into a snifter. Bottle dated 23 02 18 with 03-15 on cork.

3.75 A: Ruddy plum color. Less than a 1/2 finger of head forms with an aggressive pour. No real lacing is left.

3.75 S: Sweet and fruity. Not a whole lot of funk or acid. Cherries and cranberries stand out brightest. The raspberry is a bit more subdued underneath. Tons of vanilla and oak. Biscuity malts with some breadiness and a hint of graininess.

3.75 T: Like the nose, the fruits are the focus. The raspberry joins the cherry and cranberry in strength. Tart, but more so from the fruits than from the bacteria. It's definitely not puckering. Just a touch of woody funkiness. Again there lots of vanilla and oak, with just a hint of tannic astringency. Malts are mostly neutral with bready aftertaste.

3.75 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation that gives it a pleasant fluffiness. Lightly creamy and super smooth with a woody finish.

3.75 D: Definitely a solid beer, but I don't know that I understand the hype. Great fruity taste, but not overly impressive in the funk column.
