Poured from a 12 oz brown bottle into a clear glass tulip. No freshness date.
A: Murky red-brown with short 1-finger off-white head with a delicate line of lacing.
S: Soft caramelly maltiness with subdued herbal, earthy, and lightly citrus hops.
T: Flavor also is subdued with soft, medium caramel maltiness with light coffee and milk chocolate notes finished with orange citrus and honeysuckle notes. No flavor really stands out. Bitterness is medium at most.
M: Very creamy with moderate carbonation and medium body and delicate feel overall.
O: Not bad but pretty middle of the road. Thanks Erinn!

The look of this beer was misleading to me. Very smooth beer.

We pour a bomber into our Hop City pint glasses. It glows a rich caramel-burgundy, supporting a two and a half finger tall head of cakey, khaki colored foam. This shows good retention, flattening out into sheeted Swiss cheese lacing. No haze or sediment is noted, and clarity remains high throughout. Carbonation is light, but sits in discrete bundles of active streams. The aroma gives fresh sweetness of nectary, herbal, and citric hops, cranberry and raspberry fruitiness, fruity herbal tea tannins, sandy washed up seaweed, light buttery diacetyls, warm and toasty amber and brown malty grit, grassy earthiness, tweed, and fresh mint leafiness. With warmth comes a nice buzzing zest of grapefruity and citric hop cleanliness. Our first impression is that there is a thick syrupy quality to the flavoring, giving a surprising sweetness that goes will with the otherwise hop-forward base of the beer. As we the sip, the taste begins with warming amber toast and heavy caramel malt sweetness, sweet tea tannins, herbal and nectary hop sweetness, bitter grapefruity skins, light phenolic plastics, and echoes of fusel booziness. The middle comes to a head with mango, kiwi, and red apple sweetness that mixes with brightly tart and sugary citric and nectary hop syrups, herbal earthen mineral, vitamin dust, warming amber and pale maltiness, honey sweetness, and continued dark undertones of alcohol. The end washes through with buttery diacetyls, angel food cake, canned peach and pineapple syrups, clay, cotton, pencil eraser, amber and red malty base sugars, gentle cornbreadiness, and residual cloy of those fruity, nectary hop oils. The aftertaste breathes of cranberry and tangerine sours, chalk, gravel, lead and mineral, tinny metallics, powdery yeastiness, strawberry leaf, earthy, herbal, and citric hop twangs, Styrofoam, gentle clove and plastic phenols, and light warmth of buttery diacetyls. The body is thick, and the carbonation is medium. Slurp and smack are hearty, with cream, froth, and pop to match. The mouth is coated and oiled, dripping into a mild but warming tannic dryness. The abv is appropriate, and the beer drinks back easily as a smoother sipper.
Overall, the most enjoyable thing about this brew is both its aroma and taste. These vie for this holy distinction throughout, but if we absolutely had to crown a winner it would be flavoring, as this remains more consistent through to the last drop. This is a majorly hop-forward “imperial” red ale, and it certainly lives up to that name and promise. The hops are wonderfully fresh and enticing, blending beautifully with a thicker and heartier base grain that shows just as much caramel sweetness as it does amber and red malt toast. The end result is fresh and sultry, with nice balance and big sipping. This is a rich treat for the drinker, and we would be happy if this one stopped on by for a visit any time.
