Draft at Rock n' Fish, this was the recommendation for a spicy meal.
Slightly hazy, golden orange with a slightly off white head. Settles to a film, thin rings of lace.
Smell is of some pine and herbal hops.
Taste is of pine, some citrus, and herbal hops. Well balanced with some malt flavor to finish. There is a nice hoppy bitterness that hangs around between each sip.
Lower level of carbonation keeps it smooth and on the creamy side. Medium bodied . Overall, this is a good IPA with a very nice flavor, that cut the spice and was a great compliment to the meal.

I drank a pint of Populist. This beer had strong foam. This beer had a mellow taste of both grains and hops. Populist had good alcohol content. People who seek good alcohol content within a mellow tasting beer will enjoy Populist.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into double walled glass.

Appearance: Straw gold with slight haze. Two fingers of head dissipates to one finger and then none after a few sips. Quickly swirls up again.

Smell: Sweet haystacks, tangerine, pineapple. Pale malts not completely over powered.

Taste: Excellent balance between hops and malt. Mostly fruit (papaya?) with a hint of pine that might be more prevalent when fresh. Good malt finish gives the palate something to think about before the next sip.

Mouthfeel: Effervescent. At 7% it feels heavier than other beers at this abv. I don't mind that, but it does coat the mouth a little- might have something to do with the haze. They were going for "breadiness" and it comes through most in the mouthfeel.

Overall: I was expecting a forgettable experience based on most other 80-85 BA beers I've had. This bottles is 2 months old and still holds up really well. Not only do I think this is a very good example of a malty West Coast IPA, I think it ranks up above Green Flash West Coast, probably because it takes malts a bit more seriously. If you like hoppy IPA's but want a bit more body, this is a good beer to try.
