Style: Belgian Pale Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.75%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Stimulus is a 7% Belgian Amber made with Intelligentsia Coffee. The idea was to make a coffee beer that wasn’t black in color, and did more than just accentuate a “roasty” flavor. The coffees produced by Intelligentsia are so nuanced and flavorful that we wanted to accentuate those flavors and find complementary components we could draw on in the beer.

Handsome amber color like a single malt Scotch. Pure, clean coffee aroma. Modest head with plenty of spritz on the tongue. Tangy and light bodied. Light malty taste. More on the dry side, but with a hint of toffee.

The Belgian flavors are rather subdued. Some drying out toward the finish. Just a slight coffee-tinged bitterness. Different from the usual dark coffee brews, but throughly drinkable. Better than average coffee flavor. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Bottlecraft in San Diego.

On Tap

Stone 15th Anniversary Brewers' Reception
CSU, San Marcos
San Marcos, CA

Clear copper and bronze with a thin off-white head. Spotted and lined lacing down the glass.

Musty aroma of brewed coffee that's been sitting in the pot for too long and is now a touch scorched and stale. Some sweet elements of toffee and caramel improve the aroma some, though the coffee isn't particularly grabbing or enticing.

While the aroma hinted at it, the flavor was poorer than I expected. The coffee seems old, scorched, and watered down. There's a touch of toffee sweetness, though there's also an unpleasant flavor throughout that reminds me of sitting dish water.

Thin to medium mouthfeel. This beer could perhaps use more body and higher carbonation--seems a bit lifeless.

A pale coffee beer that is better on paper than in the glass.

A: Pours from a bomber clear light amber with a one-inch off-white head which fades to a thin cap and leaves rings, splotches, and spots of lace.

N: Fruity, fresh coffee berries. I'm a sucker for coffee and therefore somewhat biased I admit. Yeasty, floral, biscuity, caramel and toffee malts, very slight roast and some faint citrus.

T: Yeast and coffee up front with an herbal and earthy middle followed by caramel and sweetish toffee. Somewhat grainy and bready with a good balance.

M: Semi-moderate body and medium carbonation. Smooth, grainy and yeasty with a mild fruity coffee finish.

O: Interesting, eclectic and slightly on the edge, but I like it.

The appearance of this beer is of clear light amber to crisp copper orange with a medium head maybe one-inch off-white head which fades to a thin cap and leaves splotches on top and spots of lace.

The aroma of this beer has Subtle coffee notes with malt, pear, green apple, tobacco, navel orange, coffee cherry, yeasty, floral like of dandelion, caramel and toffee malts.

The flavors of this beer are of coffee probably a Colombia, tart citrus like of white grapefruit, light coffee, yeast, prune, red apple, white pepper, vanilla extract, malt, allspice, and organo. Finishes with notes of caramel and toffee.

This is a light body, like a pale ale or IPA, but a nice rich creamy mouthfeel. Carbonation is low to medium.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a Marin Brewing pint glass. Bought at Whole Foods Newport Beach CA for $9.99.

A - A dark honey yellow-orange. Off-white head leaves decent lacing.

S - Coffee big time, but also toffee and vanilla. Also a vegetal smell. Very pungent.

T - Lots of iced coffee with cream and vanilla. Not a lot more to this. As it warms, you get a little of a Belgian amber taste in the finish. Enough hops to make sure it finishes dry.

M - Definitely light in body, like a pale ale or IPA, but a nice creamy mouthfeel still. Carbonation is medium and fits the creamy taste.

O - This is a pretty good beer on the verge of being great. I would like to a see a bit of a darker, creamy beer and even more of a Belgian influence would be nicer. Also the price point is a little high on this one.

On tap at Tony's Darts Away in Burbank, CA.

Pours a hazy dark orange with a foamy beige head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, and coffee aromas. Taste is much the same with malt, earth, and coffee flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a coffee presence that works well with the base beer in my opinion.

This beer had low foam. This beer had a strong taste of espresso. Medium carbonation within this beer. People who seek a beer that tastes like espresso will enjoy Stimulus.

This beer delivers on the coffee flavor. I'm more accustomed to coffee stouts with higher abv but this is a welcomed change of pace.
Carbonation and mouthfeel is more enjoyable with each sip. Almost like a coffee flavored champagne.
I wish I bought more than one. I could imagine this being a great beer to have for brunch....
