We were out for a few drinks on Thanksgiving Eve. First stop was the Dive Bar. Next, I suggested going somewhere new to me. So my friends took me right up the street to Nick's. Walking in, and it's like taking a step back in time. Place looks like a cabaret from Berlin in the 1930's. Beautiful wood bar with really old style twin seats along the wall. Velvet wallpaper, and dusty old pictures and stuffed animal heads on the walls. Cool silver absinthe dispenser displayed prominently on the bar. Bartender came right over to help us. There were 8 beers on tap: 4 German and 4 others. The German ones were: Hofbrauhaus Dunkel, Paulaner, Spaten Oktoberfest, and Weihenstephaner. They also had a larger bottle selection, with German beers like Weihenstephaner Festbier. Lots of German beers to match the German cuisine, which I was told was good. Around the corner, there is a stage set up, with small cafe-style tables all the way to the back. There was a young blonde woman on stage singing, and talented young guy on the piano blazing away on the keys. After hanging out here for a while, I asked my friends: why haven't you taken me here before? This is like a smaller version of Jacob Wirths in Boston. Except there it's beer hall and piano singalongs. Here, it's more like antique classy bar and musical entertainment. I'd like to go back again to either eat, or just sit at a table and enjoy the show. A hidden jewel.
