Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Hop Knot IPA is made only from American malt and lots of American hops, which produce a big, broad-shouldered, hoppy beer backed up by a character as warm as, well, Mom and apple pie...

Hop Knot IPA get its peculiar name from the weaving of four different hops added at four separate times during the brewing process. Including our cavernous hop-back, which gets so stuffed with whole leaf hops that we feel genuine guilt for its excess. Hop Knot is an ale that is to be enjoyed with friends, spicy food or any time you need a good hop fix without the harsh bitterness. We hope you enjoy this pioneering beer made in the bold spirit of Americans everywhere.

This a solid beer, but not one that I can rave about. Hops are certainly present, but I tend to prefer something a bit hoppier. I think it's an IPA that has broad appeal, and there's something to be said for that, but it also falls flat in some regards. 85/100

Golden orange in color, smells citrusy and piney, a bit flowery, taste is very well balanced between slightly bitter hops and bready malts. Actually not as much hop flavor as I expected, this tastes more like an APA than an IPA to me. The feel is very easy drinking and light. Overall this is one of my favorite IPAs, probably because of how much it reminds me of a regular American pale ale.

A deep, golden pour in the glass translates into a solidly bitter scent right off the back. The malts are right there under the hops in the taste, with a great, balancing, slight sweetness that is the perfect foil to the leading, resinous hop bitterness that bat lead off in the flavor. For an almost 7% ABV IPA, the beer drinks incredibly easy and balanced, satisfying both the need for hops bitterness, as well as a malt backbone.

Overall, this is just a classic IPA. Balanced, hoppy, resinous, and a pleasure to drink. This beer is a great addition to food, and also stands pretty strong on its own.

Served in a 12 oz can at Old Town Tavern (Scottsdale, AZ). Pine resin, mint and some grapefruit with light malt undertones. Light to medium body with crisp carbonation. Crisp and refreshing with plenty of nice hop notes straight from the can.

On tap at the brewery. From notes. Reviewed 9 January 2016.

Clearish gold.
Smells hoppy, indistinctly, in an earthy/herbal/piney sort of way.
It comes across as so juicy and delicious, overripe grapefruit and floral accents. Really tightly made and on point.
