Enjoyed in a large snifter at the Tempe brewpub.
Looks: pervasive black, though a hold to the light reveals notes of crimson and burnt umber. A fuzzy one-finger tan head recedes after just a minute or two to a thing ring, leaving minimal blobs of lace.
Smells: like cotton candy, tangy dark chocolate, salt and some very subtle earthy hops. I don't get much bourbon in the nose, though a tiny bit of oak is present.
Tastes: of tangy yet muted dark chocolate, with some sweet cotton candy, bubble gum and a slight hint of coffee and cayenne pepper. For a porter, the malts are way subdued, forcing you to really search to find them. A slight oakiness is present, but the bourbon is a complete afterthought. It's hard to believe this actually spent a year in the barrels, as I barely pick up any whiskey flavors. Dryish finish. Too bad.
Feels: thin and a bit watery, with peppery medium carbonation. I'm just not feeling it.
Drinks: having tried a barrel-aged stout from Four Peaks during American Craft Beer Week, I'm shocked at how poor this beer tasted. Not enough of either malt or bourbon flavors. Too thin, too subtle, and too expensive at $7 a snifter.
