This in a nice residential that was a good walk from our hotel. The building look a bit like a pull-barn all in green with the small wooden sign glowing. There is a man on a stool sitting in front. You give him your ID and he gives each person a credit type card to use inside.

As you enter the door, you go straight up the stairs to the second floor. There is a set of 6 tables and a bar to your left with more stairs and a few connected rooms with more seats in other places. The coolers are off to your right with bottles and some of the bottles you can take with you.

It was very speakeasy hip with nice reproduction old beer signs on the wall and it felt very homey.

They have a menu in English and Portuguese and it was mostly up to date, with good descriptions of food and beers. A big selection of Brazilian, European and American craft beers, on tap and in bottles.

When they were out of one of the beer I requested he had a very good recommendation of a Epa that they brewed there. It took me a minute to realize he was saying IPA. I was surprised but our waiter had pretty good English and knew a good deal about beer.

The food was really tasty pub food, and everything was fried crispy: German sausage, polenta sticks, and a few other treats we had. That was very conducive to more drinking.

It was a great time and it was nice to take some beers home. We took our two young kids with us and waiter ended up telling about his two small kids. We didn't speak much Portuguese and were clearly not from Brazil but they made us feel like it was our neighborhood craft bar. Very nice. Make sure to get some bottles of Maria Degolada by Annex Bier on the way out and you will not be disappointed.

Bier Markt is the newest kid on the block in the city of Porto Alegre. It's located in a residential area, and watch those address numbers, beacuse this place is small off the street. A two-storied place, there are plenty of tables inside. The bar sits on the bottom floor, which houses the eight taps. The interior is very decorated (are Brazilians beer bars owners more serious about this aspect?). They even have Arrogant Bastard and Stone IPA bottles in their bottle collection on display (empty bottles, don't get your hopes up).

The beer selection has a strong focus on Brazilian micros, with a little room for imports. 8 on-tap, about 40 in the bottle. The tap selection is certainly the most interesting one I've seen in Brazil. On-tap: Abadessa Export, Slava Pils, Coruja Extra, Eisenbahn Pale Ale & Weiss, rotating DaDo tap, rotating tap (Schmitt Weizen during my visit), and even a rotating homebrew. In the bottle, there is Anner Bier, Baden Baden, Coruja, Barley, Meantime, Weihenstephaner, Wernesgruner, Whitehead, Schmitt, Rasen Bier. The service was helpful, though a touch slower than I'd like. Oh, and get some pretzels to nibble on. They are homemade pretzels served with some mean mustard. One patron said to us that they are the most authentic pretzels he's tasted outside of Germany.

I knew I would like this place, but I left I little dissaponted because I expected to LOVE this place. Regardless, Bier Markt is worth stopping by.

Update 10/21/10: Came back for a second round. I got to meet the owner of the place, and he sounds passionable about beer. In fact, he lived in Redondo Beach, CA for a little while and learned to homebrew there. That probably explains the `American Stout´ house brew on-tap which I had and found to be EXTREMLY hoppy in true West Coast fashion.
