Cayuga Porter is a pretty good looking beer. The body is a very dark brown that at its core is opaque, but allows light through at the edges. The brown-colored head is big and creamy; although the retention is pretty good, there is no lacing left behind.
There is almost nothing in the nose of this one. Perhaps a whiff of sweetness and that is all.
The flavor is a little more assertive than the aroma, but really only because there was nowhere to go but up. A bit of roasted malt comes first, and that is followed by a little bit of caramel sweetness and a hint of chocolate, followed abruptly by nothing. There really isn't a whole lot going on with this one.
Mouthfeel is fine, which is always a good thing.
There is nothing particularly wrong with Cayuga Porter, and the description says it was brewed with locally sourced malts, which is kind of neat in a very "Ithaca" way. This beer, however, could use a little more assertive flavor profile to take it up to the next level.
