Poured into, again, the only clean glass available. Poured a murky light brownish color. I'm actully not sure what color this is. The head was decent, fluffy and full, but it only lasted about a moment. No lacing. Thank goodness the nose is a redeeming quality here. Nice and malty, with great piney hops. Warm caramel mango scents wet.my palate. Sadly, the taste just does not match the scent. It's much more similar to the appearance, murky! The malt is heavily in the fore-front. The hops are completely missing until the after taste, which just falls completely flat. It's like two beers, a red ale and a pale ale, completely disjointed. Sad.

I tried this beer, one off the tapper at the brewery as part of a seven sample flight. It poured a clear amber with very thin white head that left a spotty lace. The scent had subtle sweet malt and hop notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink. There was light malt base with barley and grain presence accented by great Californian hops. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it is a solid beer.

Draft at the brewery
Big frothy 1 finger off white head with moderate retention, sticky lacing, clear amber to auburn color
Nose semi sweet malt, big toasty bread crust, touch of caramelized sugar and sweet bread, hint if toffee, light dark fruits
Taste toasted grainy malt, cereal, toasted bread crust, little caramel and toffee, a hint nutty as well, some reddish fruits from malt derived esters, light floral hop, drier mild sticky finish
Mouth is med bod, med to higher frothy carb
Overall another solid beer

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #63 (Apr 2012):
LOOK: Hazed amber, impressive froth
SMELL: Dried grass, hazelnuts, chalky yeast, faint caramel, faint spice, browned apples
TASTE: Grainy, slightly tart, salty, grassy, citric hop, leafy, caramel, buttery yeast, ripe apples & pears; very dry, grainy finish
More of an old-school Amber Ale that seems to have been lost in translation. Thankfully, we speak Old-World microbrew, and understand balance and nuances are sometimes more important than using immaculate yeast and over-hopping. Nothing earth shattering here, just good drinking.

On-tap at the CIty Pub in Redwood City. On to the beer:
Dark amber colored with a tint of autumn brown. Reasonably lace sticks to the glass as it is consumed. The nose offers toffee and butterscotch notes, and some floral hopping. Fine so far.
The malt in the taste seems light. In fact, the overall taste seems light, but at least it offers complexity. Toast, subtle toffee, esters, touches of tea and floral hops. The beer is light bodied and in parts it seems to get watery.
It's an okay amber ale. Good to wash down lunch, and that is perhaps its greatest strength.
