Never knew that a town like Canby might have a grocery with such a *killer* beer department...not a slight, just sayin'...

I'll start by divulging I was tipped off to this place by Liz in the beer department at Whole Foods - Bridgeport Village. She was hunting for spare bottles of The Bruery's 'Partridge in a Pear Tree' for me and could not track them down, but mentioned 'the Thriftway in Canby might still have some'. Interesting, as I'd have never pegged anywhere in Canby as having a great beer selection. Well, I was wrong - there is at least one place that does...

A modest looking grocery from the outside, inside Cutsforth's Market is a tidy, modernized place full of all the staples plus the requisite organic produce and the like. For Oregonians, I'd liken the feel to a Haggen, a Market of Choice, or one of the nicer QFCs. The beer cooler (why I was there) did not disappoint: 50'+ of chilling lagers and ales, well more than half of the 'craft' variety and a sign that brags about the 'Finest Selection of Beer in the Area'. Yep, there were 3 (count 'em) PiaPTs waiting to be snagged (awesome!), a couple Two Turtle Doves in an adjacent slot and an army of craft beer choices surrounding on several tiers: Hair of the Dog, HUB, Deschutes, Pelican, Lompoc, Ninkasi, Southern Oregon, Rogue, Oakshire and the local ilk, all in vast quantities. Plenty of Oskar Blues, Marin, Bear Republic, Great Divide, Stone, Alesmith, Moylan's, Elysian, Avery, Dogfish Head and Lost Coast. Scads of Mikkeller, BrewDog, Sam Smith, Weihenstephaner, Fuller's, Lindemans, Rochefort, Ayinger, Dupont, St. Feuillien. Shall I continue? I'm being conservative when I estimate 300 bottles: there were dozens of Oregon/NW craft bottles from far and wide, plenty from Belgium/Germany/UK and beyond (some pretty obscure stuff). Among the locals, bottles of Fred from the Wood could be had at a price less than I paid at the brewery's own Dock Sale. A few oddball/old things from some brewers, including Stone (08.08.08 & 12th Anniversary???). Overall, prices seemed very much in line with the Portland grocery norms.

No 'service' to speak of, but a very friendly young woman at the checkout commented (after I complimented the beer department) that 'they're really good at getting new things all the time'. An extra bonus: 10% off for buying 6 or more 'special bottles'. That's enough to come back for. A recommended stop if you're ever in the area...I might even find an excuse...
