Pours clear amber/brown, very dark, but good clarity. Tan colored head on an Imperial IPA, whaaaat?

Aromas of caramel malt, toffee, light coffee roast, burnt caramel, oh yeah, and citrusy hops. Tangerine, orange rind, chocolate.

Lots of the same. Hops take a backseat here, but not overly malty either... Citrus and milk chocolate. Orange rind, bittersweet finish, but not harsh. Vanilla bean, hint of roast. Somehow, this works. Semi-dry finish.

Creamy mouthfeel. Very smooth, no alcohol warmth.

There’s really no style for this. No such thing as an English Imperial IPA, and it's definitely not a Black IPA. Drinkable, nonetheless. But it’s definitely not an American DIPA. Nonetheless, points given for complexity and making this combination of flavors enjoyable.

The Beers of California

Bottled Date: None

A: Hazy amber with a creamy white foam that settles to a thin layer.

S: Gorgeous malt sugar complexity complemented with earthy, resinous hops served with several scoops of dank, pine, tea, and citrus.

T: Biscuity malt; full, thick, and exploding caramel sweetness, supports the earthy and bitter hop bite. The hops follow the nose with dankness, grapefruit, green tea and pine. The bitterness builds to the finish along with adequate alcohol warmth.

M: Moderate feel, resinous, and good linger; all trademarks of a solid IPA.

O: Bordering Imperial Red territory, this "too dark for style" IPA features some awesome sweet and earthy malts which paired well with the hop bill. Looking forward to getting more of these for the fridge.

Not much aroma, but big on the citrus...not overpowering though. Had at the brewery, so it tasted very fresh.

Picked up a bottle of this and the White Sand to compare. Poured into a tulip glass while helping my daughter unpack at her dorm. First impression was that I was expecting a double black IPA. Color was amber with a nice head. Not too hoppy for a 2IPA. I liked this one more than the White Sand (which is not a white ale, by the way). I'll have either get the next time I'm in SoCal.

Appearance-Red to orange on the rim with an off white tight foam.

Smell-Grass and Strawberry hard candy that reminds me of strawberry bubbleicious gum from Little League.

Taste-Bitter grass hops with some of the strawberry from the nose although a lot more subtle.

Mouthfeel-Heavy IPA but a good balance and unexpectedly clean finish

Overall-My favorite that I've had from Strand so far. Killer nose.

This was recommended to me at my favorite store... Not at all what I was expecting - very dark and lacks many features of an IPA.

Consumed at BoHo Hollywood - September 12th, 2012. Reviewed from notes.

Clear dark brown with deep, deep amber highlights. A three-finger dense foam head sits atop this beer, primarily because they blew the keg on my pour. Interestingly, I had one from a bottle as well and the head is similar; meringue-like and very clingy and sticky. Great sheeting/lacing.

Slight aroma of soap and esthery alcohol. A very mild aroma for a DIPA.

Dark roasted grain character on palate, more toffee than coffee. Quite bitter. Aftertaste is resiny, citric hop flavor.

Medium body, prickly carbonation, slightly dry finish.

Not quite a "black IPA" but certainly darker than the standard issue. Sort of splits the difference between hop bombs and malt bombs. Dare I say "balanced" with a slight favoring of malt over hops? Yes, I dare. Nice beer and a nice change from tooth-enamel stripping hop juice.
