look: 3.75 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

Poured into a pint glass.

3.75 A: Black color. Two fingers of frothy/creamy tan head. Retention is good and a short ring of lacing is left.

3.5 S: Lots of roasted barley and semi-sweet chocolate in the nose. Dark roast coffee, char, and molasses to follow. On the drier side with a heavy roast character.

3.5 T: Tastes like it smells, however, it is sweeter than the nose. Lots of roasted barley with mild char, bitter chocolate, cocoa powder, dark roast coffee. Layers of caramel with some milk chocolate added.

3.5 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Fairly creamy and super smooth with a slight bitter aftertaste.

3.5 D: Decent all around. No complaints, but no real praises either.

The beer comes in a black color with a thick mocha fluffy head.

The flavor is milk chocolate and mocha, hints of coffee, but with lots of woody and earthy hops in the middle and on.

The mouthfeel is fluffy and medium plus.

The beer has lots of similarities to Darkness.

a: its black with some faint brown and dark ruby red notes on the bottom and sides of the glass. 2 finger ricky marshmellow-like beige/tan head

s: roasted malts, chocolate milk, raisins, fig, sweet toffee & caramel. a hint of cream and faint wood. this smells much sweeter than expected - its a really nice aroma

t: again, as noted in the aroma, its very sweet up front. sweet caramel, fig, raisins, and even some plum in here. then right away it changes to a grassy/herbal 'green' flavor. fades again to bittersweet chocolate and roasted coffee beans - there you pick up a slight bitterness: part toasted malt, part earthy bitterness (tea). ends sweet with chocolate grains. sweetness definitely outweighs the roasty toasty malt notes that you find in a lot of stouts

m: the lighter side of medium - lighter than expected. not a large amount of carbonation

o: not what i expected, and thats not really a bad thing. its sweeter than i was imagining - but evens out with the earthy notes that i mentioned. this is a nice beer to end the night on

Consumed March 22nd, 2014 in a Strand Brewing goblet/tulip type glass. Served at 50 degrees F. Bottle label calls this an export stout, not American stout. Also, ABV is listed as 7.5% on bottle.

Standard pour returns a moderately creamy one finger light tan head with above average lacing and sheeting. Color is very clear, very dark brown with deep garnet highlights when held to light.

Aroma is muted cocoa and coffee with a fleeting touch of smoke.

Flavor is ever-so-slightly sour (like overdone coffee) and a touch lactic. Bitter coffee grounds and unsweetened chocolate. A bit of an acidic edge as well.

Mouthfeel is thinner and less creamy than anticipated; more like a porter than a stout, if I were splitting hairs.

Overall, not terribly enjoyable. I'm willing to bet this would be a far more enjoyable and palatable beast on a nitro tap. Similar to other export stouts I have had before (like Lion) and also not enjoyed. Must be that I don't care for something about the style of foreign stout.

Pours almost black in color with an off-white head. Nose is of roasted malt with a mild chocolate and cocoa aroma. There’s a little bit of vanilla and a hint of licorice. Tastes of dark chocolate, licorice, and plenty of roasted malt. Just a hint of coffee, but it’s decently bitter. Kind of thin bodied.

On tap at Strand Brewing Company in Torrance, CA.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, coffee, and cocoa. Taste is much the same with a medium amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is that is easy to drink but I think it tastes better than it smells.
