Picked this up today and was curious of what a "coffee stout" tasted like. It pours a small tan head. The smell was overpowered with dark coffee and roasted grains. The taste is strong with coffee, chocolate, malt and a dry grainy finish. Overall a great stout in my opinion.

Hand carried bottle from TN

Appearance: Black glass shows a sliver of deep ruby edge, holds a thin halo of brown foam that laces the glass.

Aroma: Rich malt, roasted barley stoutness, hint of coffee with cream and tobacco. Murky.

Taste: Full stout profile is cut by the heavy coffee, with a bitter and sour note that is a bit overwhelming.

Mouthfeel: Heavy with a full chew, medium carbonation still manages to go frothy. Oily finish.

Overall: Big beer, a real sipper. The sour note is too much for me, but the coffee and malt has me settling in for the long haul.

12 oz bottle with a Jan. 2016 bottling date served in a goblet.
Pours dark brown with a decent head. Black and opaque in the glass. OK aroma and good flavor with plenty of dark roasted grain and a moderate-mild amount of coffee.
Excellent, creamy smooth, full body with well set medium-low carbonation.

First had poured from 12-oz. bottle, with apparent bottled-on date rubbed off, into faceted mug. I've enjoyed beers from Back Forty, but this serious stout earns a regular place in the beer fridge.

Pours a deep dark mahogany with a coffee colored head.

Smells of coffee, chocolate, caramel malt, and tobacco.

Bitter coffee and chocolate balanced by a sweet caramel maltiness with rich tobacco notes. Also has notes of dark fruit - plume, raisin, and fig. A very tasty stout.

Appearance: Dark cola black; caramel hints in the edges. definitely pour straight into your vessel of choice to get that head going, I almost didn’t get any pouring on the side. Pretty good khaki coloured head made of medium sized bubbles. My head dissipated fairly quickly with a moderate lacing.

Aromatics: The coffee smell is suggested at rather than being blatantly obvious, it is blended with a great mixture of sweet roasted malt and hints of molasses and vanilla.

Taste: What this coffee stout lacks in actual coffee aroma well makes up for it in taste which is a power packed espresso quality with roasted coffee and cacao supported by subtle caramel/toffee sweetness behind the bitter.

Mouth: Medium to full bodied rich coffee with a smooth creaminess and a little weight that you can feel in the finish. Wonderfully balanced for a coffee stout.

Overall: I generally put coffee stouts in its own “special” group - I almost always have them first thing in the morning with breakfast (as I am not a coffee person) and I have a very special ritual for them. And this one is superb! Definitely in my top 5 coffee stouts for this year, and worth savouring every sip.

Pours a black color. 1/3 inch head of a tan color. Decent retention and good lacing. Smells of piney hops, strong sweet malt, roasted malt, hint of alcohol, and slight chocolate. Fits the style of an American Stout. Mouth feel is smooth and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of strong sweet malt, roasted malt, piney hops, alcohol, hint of yeast, and wood. Overall, average appearance, good aroma and body, but lacking coffee.

Pours black, with a thick creme colored head on top. Fair retention, with thin lacing left behind. Roasted malts, coffee, and earthy notes. Roasted malts drive the taste forward, with big, roasted coffee creating a crescendo to a magnificent peak. Gets a bit hot at the end as the beer moves towards room temperature. Medium finish length. Mouth feel is grainy, and medium-full. Overall, a beer that very much impresses me. Coffee is delightful, and the look is fantastic.

Served in a 12oz snifter. Poured straight into glass to get head going, and then tilted off to maintain the hearty head through the end of the pour.

Thanks to RichJ1970 for this bottle, from his box in NBS BIF#3. Before we get to the review, a caveat: I hate coffee, don't touch the stuff. I do, however try to give the beers a fair review. 12oz bottle, bottled on 1/5/16, poured into 10oz goblet. Poured a solid black, with about 1/8-1/4 inch of brown head that had low retention, and very light lace.

In the nose, there was definitely a solid coffee blast upfront, with just a hint of beer in the background. On the front of the tongue, the coffee was subdued, and I got a bit of the beer. As it went across the tongue however, the coffee just dominated, covering up all beer flavors.

The body was a highlight; full, even, well-rounded, and smooth. Drinkability suffered, for me, from the sheer dominance of the coffee. Overall, this is a pretty good beer for what it is. What it is, however, is not my jam. YMMV. I would like to try the base beer though, I suspect it would be right up my alley.

Poured from 12 oz bottle dated 1/5/2016 into snifter.

A: Pitch black with 2 finger mocha head. Nice retention and lacing.

S: Roasted malts with a big coffee punch. Slight hints of brown sugar or molasses.

T: Espresso and rich coffee with some chocolate and vanilla notes.

M: Full bodied but not thick. Finish is all roasted coffee beans.

O: Very well executed coffee stout. My favorite from these guys.

Maybe its cause were in canada and the beer here is slops, but this is great. Great smell, pure coffee but not bitter or astringent. Jet black. Good body. Exactly what i want for a coffee porter.
