I bought a 4-pack of this beer, moreso because of the label. It's funny.

Well the good thing is, this beer doesn't taste like Russian hooker piss. /endsnark

This beer reminds me more of a hoppy, bitter stout vs. an IPA. But I'm OK with that. I don't get much of the citrus flavor.

Poured from 12 oz can into a clear glass tulip. Canned on 02/09/17 on bottom of can.

A: Completely black with no light at all getting through with 2-finger off-white frothy head with decent retention and copious lacing.

S: One of the weirdest aromas I have ever experienced. It smells like orange marshmallows with black pepper sprinkled on top. Kind of a sickeningly sweet aroma, like your head got stuck in an orange cotton candy machine.

T: Flavor is also very odd with a lot of strange sweetness lurking regardless of your efforts to avoid it -- orange pudding with a tinge of black pepper and roast edge on the end. Alcohol fairly heavy character. Low bitterness.

M: soft and lush but not in a good way -- layers on the tongue and has too low of carbonation to move it away.

O: Train wreck -- Orange Marshmallow Express with no brakes.

Canned on 4/7/17, poured to YETI on 4/17/17

L: The label said black IPA but I was still shocked upon pouring. I'm only a year into the craft beer scene but I've never seen a DIPA like this before, very dark. Thick foamy cocoa tan colored head that hung around. Thick lacing.

S: Interestingly great! The initial aroma was soft floral IPA crossed with a Brown Ale and a Porter. Did not pick up on the mandarin orange until later in the session. Great aroma throughout! Could barely smell the alcohol but not in a negative way, and to be expected for an 11abv.

T: Wasn't sure what to expect but... first sip, Wow! I love it. Very very flavorful. Rich, dark roasted, malty and hoppy, not too sweet, just enough bitterness. Not your typical DIPA but I think this is exactly what a Black Imperial IPA should taste like. Picked up hints of a very ripe mandarin orange towards the end. Awesome! I love strong, flavorful beers like this.

F: Thick and creamy. Lightly carbonated. Full bodied, resinous. Very drinkable at 11 abv and 70 ibu. Not overly boozy or bitter at all.

O: I tend to lean towards the fruity DIPA's but this is a masterpiece in my opinion! One of a kind. Intriguing. The mandarin orange didn't stand out as much as I had hoped but I wouldn't change anything. What a great experience! I've been on a tropical fruity, citrusy IPA/ DIPA kick for several months and this was such a nice, unintentional change for me. Glad I got the 4 pack; Will buy more. Wish this were available year round.

Update. Got another 4pk. Same canned date as above, enjoyed on 6/2/17 and wouldn't change anything in the review. This is a great beer!

Poured from 12 oz can dated 2/9/2017.

A: Murky pitch black with one finger tan head. Moderate retention but leaving some nice sticky lacing.

S: Oranges, roasted malts, and earthy hops. Aroma is a bit subdued for an IIPA.

T: Some nice bright citrus with the mandarin oranges mixed with rich roasted malts that come off with an almost chocolate quality to it. Getting more sweetness than hop bitterness but not suprising at 11%.

M: Medium to full body with average carbonation. This almost comes across as a hoppy stout, but a tasty one at that.

O: Very interesting beer. I can't remember seeing another imperial black IPA. Enjoyable to drink, and I would buy it again.
