Thanks to rawfish for this extra that arrived last week. Rye am I happy? Rye, it’s obvious, isn’t it? 22 oz. bottle split with my ryefe, er, wife.

The cap pops & bam, overflow. My attempt to deep-throat the neck & prevent the eruption is in vain; I guess my future is in accounting after all. As expected, a riotous head billows from a light orange body (too much tanning booth?). Nose is light citrus, lemon, but little of either.

Rye of the Lager could lead to an overdose of either. Spicy rye looms over this, with the lagering a soft, 12 grain background. The tang mingles with citrus & pine to create a nice bitterness that manages to puncture the rye cacophony. Dry & akin to sparkling wine in the mouth: big bubbles. Drinking a lot of this, I could do.

The initial burst of kinetic energy had me thinking ‘disaster’ but this turned out to be a good, solid beer.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: Darker amber color with a thin off white head.

Smell: Citrus and pine notes.

Mouthfeel/ Taste: Smooth medium bodied. Taste of bitter hops and pine with a hint of bread like notes.

Overall: Good beer. Not what I expected from this one, it drinks like an IPA.

On tap at the Barrel Republic.

Appearance: Medium amber with a semi-durable off-white head that leaves a partial coat of lacing.

Aroma: Surprisingly hopp, with hints of pine and bisquits.

Flavor: Mild+ bitterness. More piney hops than malt flavor. Spicy rye is evident.

Feel: Medium body with good medium+ carbonation.

O: the lager version of a Rye APA.

Pours an effervescent bronze with 2+ fingers of rocky cream colored head. Stellar lacing & very good head retention

S: Bready, grassy

T: Peppery weet breadyness, with grassyness & lemons & grapefruits up front, dryness as well. Peppery, sweet breadyness, & pomello & a little leafy hops. Finishes peppery with leafy hops, a little dryness, plus a little cattyness

MF: Medium body, slight carbonation, great balance

Solid offering, maybe the best I've had from these guys. Easy to drink

So good. Don't pass this one up. Will be picking up several more. Delicious! Everything about it is desirable.

Brown glass bomber nabbed at a Safeway in San Francisco. Regrettably brief notes below:

APPEARANCE: White cap lasts about 6-7 minutes. Body colour is a dull copper. No yeast particulate/lees are visible within.

AROMA: Faint blueberry indicates Mosaic's use. Some light onion from the Simcoe. Pale malts. No resin from the Amarillo, unfortunately. I detect no spiciness from the rye.

Aromatic intensity is average.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Coating mouthfeel. Floral and slightly oniony taste. Blueberry gets a bit lost in the mix, but it's there when I search for it.

No rye spiciness here; I imagine far less than 51% of the grain bill is rye.

Flavour is muted and reticent across the board; there's just not much flavour here. A shallow brew.

Smooth, wet, unrefreshing, medium-bodied. Overcarbonated.

OVERALL: Drinkable but forgettable fare. I wouldn't buy this again (especially in the unnecessary bomber format), but it's not a bad brew by any means. I'd like to see Sudwerk play up the Amarillo and package this in 6 packs.

Clear light coppery color with a white foam. Bubbles streaming in the Maredsous goblet. Some spice and citrus in the nose. A touch of lime peel. Mouthfeel is a more coarse carbonation with a club soda feel. Medium body and a tangy, citrusy taste.

Moderate bitterness that mellows out with the mouthful of malt and the modest sweetness. Some roasted taste with an undertone of caramel. This is a really tasty rye brew with plenty of spiciness and a hoppy edge. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Bine & Vine in San Diego.
