Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into a seidel.

A- Dark brown almost black body, but when held to light, it shows caramel and amber hues. The head is plentiful and sudsy, oatmeal in color. Lace streaks about the mug. 5

S- Kind of frustrated with the aroma. I’m getting nothing. Is it the seidel? The beer? What I am smelling smells like tart coconut. Maybe some brown bread. 2

T- Flavor also shows some tartness, but here it’s like a tart cherry and not disagreeable. There’s some chocolate and vanilla that blend with the cherry to form a cordial-like flavor. Oakiness and caramel layer atop these flavors. I’m reminded a bit of Dr. Pepper with this flavor. I like it, but also feel the tartness is an accident and the barrels don’t show a lot of influence. 4

M- Again, the tartness distracts a bit, but beyond it is a pleasant full-bodied, rich body, moderate sweetness, some solvent and astringent feel from the alcohol. 4

This is a nice brew, but it has some flaws. First Sudwerk beer and I like the bourbon barrel doppelbock concept. I’d like to try more beers like this.

On tap at Ojai Beverage Company in Ojai, CA.

Pours a hazy dark orange-brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, caramel, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, and wood aromas. Taste is much the same with marshmallow, vanilla, caramel, toffee, bourbon, and wood flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of wood bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with really tasty marshmallow and sticky sugar flavors.

Serving type: on tap.

Poured from fridge temp to tulip. Pours very dark (not black, but very dark brown). Good carbonation - almost 3cm head - nice tan brown. Smell - lot's of bourbon, vanilla, caramel, maybe a bit of cinnamon. Reminds of a BA barley wine on the nose. Taste - toffee, bourbon, some sweetness initially. A touch of bitterness on the aftertaste. Tastes improves with some warming. Overall, this is fantastic. Lovely barrel aged doppelbock!

Has a clean malty nose with traces of vanilla, coconut and dark sugars. Pours brilliant chestnut with a thin light tan head that leaves thin lace and a suggestion of legs. The palate starts nutty, vanilla, dark malt sugars, spicy grains, and faint chocolate which gets bigger as it warms. As it warms dark fruit cake and bourbon flavors grow. The beer is chewy with above average carbonation with a slightly warming finish.

Served in a snifter from a 22oz bottle acquired 90 miles from the brewery.

A: Near pitch black, slightly brown around the edges. Little bit of light brown head.
S: Toasted coconuts, vanilla, bourbon.
T: Big toasted coconuts up front with vanilla, finishes up with toffee and dark chocolate with a bourbon underpinning throughout
M: Coats the mouth, the dark chocolate and bourbon flavors linger
O: Great, great beer. Doppelbock sweetness with barrel aging produces some great flavors.

Gorgeous red-brown with plenty of foam in the Bellegems tall glass. Great aroma of Bourbon with a woody nose. Lush carbonation but not overly sharp on the tongue.

You wouldn't call it boozy, but there's a smooth and inviting whiskey flavor. Plenty of sweetness, since it's a Doppelbock after all, but again the restraint is admirable. The alcohol rises on clouds of roasted malt and a cookie-dough taste. The hops take the edge off the sugar, but it's just so luscious.

This is one of the better Bourbon-aged brews I've had, and most of them are pretty good, so this one is a standout. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Bine & Vine in San Diego.
