Located in the meatpacking district of downtown NYC, Tanuki Tavern is an out of the way restaurant that specializes in Asian Fusion style food and Hitachino craft beers.

The atmosphere is quite lively and fun. It's all in a sort of modern Japanese style. There furniture is low but comfortable, there are lanterns hanging from the ceiling, and nice, soft ambient lighting. There's a bar on the ground floor, with a large sitting area. Upstairs is the main dining room. You can look down on the bar from the dining room, as they are all one huge room with a massive ceiling -- which is sort of fun. It attracts a pretty young crowd.

The place is a little more refined then your average pub, which may or may not be a bad thing depending on what you're looking for. However, the service was friendly and professional, and not at all snooty -- a plus.

They have a great menu. My group had a selection of very fresh sushi, tuna sliders (delicious mini hamburgers made from tuna), shrimp lollipops, etamame beans, etc.

The beer selection is limited, but interesting. They have some so so Kirin Ichigo, but where they shine is with the Hitachinos. They have a pretty good selection of those, and when I went, they had just gotten a very small shipment of a particularly rare Hitachino. Apparently they only bottle 400, and Tanuki Tavern got half. I went there before I started really appreciating beer, so I can't tell you what it was called, but it tasted amazing, and different from any other Hitachino I've had to date. It was straw yellow, had strong carbonation, a prolific head, but that's about all I remember. EDIT: Upon further research, I believe it was a Sōjun Weizen Classic Ale (Cedar Aged) Hitachino Brewed For Isetan.

I recommend this place to anyone looking for some fun downtown. Go for lunch, or a late dinner. Reservations would help, but are not necessary -- they have a lot of tables.
