I have Never reviewed any bar until today. I am a beer loving mofo and have been succumbed to this new era of young brewers and entrepreneurs in the Tijuana area that is taking The Baja Mexico by storm. I have never thought that the craft scene down south would be so huge that is safe to claim that we are getting the heads-up because the Mexican Craft Beer houses could be knocking our front door anytime with their unique style, taste and sophistication! When in TJ there are quite a few places to get your hoppy-fix, but few actual deliver; one is clearly THE BEER BOX TIJUANA. Heard about it many times from friends that go down the border for the new culinary explosion going down there (excellent restaurants by the way) and others just like to sink in the whole Mexican Border experience, and was totally amazed how the Beer Box's staff is well prepared to make your craft beer experience night a perfect 10. The store is ready for beer to go, but you would want to stay for the show. Many local brewmasters as well as local artists show up now and then, making this rustic bar THE place to come and enjoy your beer. From 8 craft beers on tap to a whole double fridge with worldwide branded beers from countries like Belgium, Germany, England, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and all the IPA craze from California as well. The Beer Box is a MUST next time you are here for the cultural and culinary experience. Cons: it gets kinda stuffy after 11pm on the weekends. Smoking is not allowed but there are a few who take in their electric cigarettes and some who smoke outside. Cons: parking sucks. But leave your car on the valet to the Brazilian steakhouse next door.

I was surprised to see that someone gave "The Beerbox" in Tijuana such a positive review.

I had heard about the place by several friends that are into good beer so I decided to try it. The overall all look and feel of the place was nice, small pub-ish (very small), dark and rather "rustic". They have a couple refrigerators in the entrance with beers and then some more on stands, not refrigerated, on the opposite end. At the end there is a small bar-like counter and stools for a couple people to sit down. Overall the look and feel of the atmosphere f just the place was fine, cozy. I did not try any if what they were serving as their "house" beer of the time, because I was looking to share about some belgian beers with my friend, so I cannot attest to the quality of their own products.

Right off the bat, after looking at their selection, I ask for any suggestions to a guy who seems to be in charge, sitting in front of a macbook at the end of the counter. He barely looks at me and mumbles out something that sounded like a "well it depends on what you like" and then continued to stare at his computer. He later, at his time, decided to ask a little bit more about what we were interested in. Once I explained that we were looking for say a trappist, then he recommended one. And that was all the interaction with us, the customers.

Now, I get it, beer is very personal, just like taste, but the guys (I felt like) forget they run a business, and that the customer is the reason why the business is there in the first place. Not only ignoring us, but also giving out this all-to-burnt-out 'beer expert connoisseur' attitude that soooo many places like it might have. I am not a connoisseur or a sommelier, but I am an amateur that has travelled great beer countries in the world and that has tried different styles from and in many different places, which gives me at least a little bit of "worldly" advantage over them. That is the reason why I give them such a low score in service. And why I would probably not go back there. I have a masters degree, so I am educated and make and good living, which gives me the potential to purchase goods and services that could be considered "pricey" to some, like Beerbox TJ, but I really don't feel like dishing my money out with them. I have heard very similar consensus on this by several of my friends or people that now, make and produce their own beer. On a personal note, I believe that people that have a good experience in the place are like minded with the administrators, their friends or people they might know.

I also found it to be a bit pricey, since most of the beers they have can be purchased across the border, in San Diego, at much more reasonable prices. I understand the costs of importing beer can be expensive and that it is a business after all, but geographically I believe the US factor should drive the prices down a bit, compared to being somewhere like say, Mexico City, that is clearly not in driving distance to any place that might sell import beers like in Tijuana, where San Diego offers a great variety of stores that do so.

The place has potential, wish they were better in their customer service. Maybe one day I'll steal their customers, if I decide on taking on such a great project like my own beer joint.

Since I've got my first visit to The Beerbox Tj in December, i was very surprised and excited by having what we call a " Beer Boutique" finally in Tijuana with the slogan "World's famous beers". It's just the kind of store you want near by, not only for the big selection of brands from over the world, also becouse a few wood stools and mini bar with a nice decoration makes you feel confortable and taste the beer you want.

I was very happy they also have selection from mini-breweries from the south of Mexico, and i mean not the comercial brands you see on tv! wow! Tempus,Poe,Minerva,Cucapah just for name it and a few months ago the "Duff". yeah! you're right! the Simpson's Cartoon Beer made in Mexico also....

The staff, exceptionally friendly and always ready to advice the right beer just the kind of person you are.. I prefer an ale or porter, also a Belgium... My favorite: Carolus Golden, prices are really reasonable. Since that day, im visiting very frecuently almost every week on fridays. Ahh The manager also its a Beer Geek and brews once a while, and if you're lucky you can taste a home made selection. I was in the Bbox last friday.. and maybe I've making my own beer at home and share with my friends. Cheers Friends!!!
