Style: Belgian Dark Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Name changed from Chambly Noire to Noire de Chambly in Aug. 2009.

This dark ale was created in honour of the brave soldiers of the Carignan-Salières Regiment, with their famous black musketeer hats. In 1665, King Louis XIV sent the regiment to New France to defend against the Iroquois. He had a number of strategic forts, including Fort Chambly, built along the Richelieu River, ensuring peace and prosperity for the colony. Many French Canadians are the direct descendants of these intrepid forebears.

A 750 ml 5-year aged Noir De Chambly (30/12/12) poured into a flute-like beer glass. I've had this beer before but never reviewed it. Had left this with family and drank it for Christmas just to drink it up and get rid of it since it's pretty old now.

Appearance: Cork was under pressure and saw visible gases escape when it was uncorked. Pours a very dark liquid with an inch of some beige head. Almost completely opaque when put up to the light. Carbonation is noticeable through the dark drink. Foam stays stuck to the glass and leaves heavy lacing.

Aroma: Spicy, malty and roast notes. The typical Unibroue spice mix smell.

Taste: Slightly smokey, malty, sweet. Coriander is the dominant spice/taste. A lot more tame and mild after this many years. Possibly some cardboard notes - I may have over-aged. There is a significant taste I never noticed before in my last tasting of the beer.

Mouthfeel: Creamy-like, Finishes very slight dry.

Overall: It was good, although a bit on the light side. I've had it before and wasn't a huge fan of it, but aging changes the flavor significantly. It's still pretty solid.

Aging definitely rounded out the edges, removed any bite, and made it much more palatable. I did find it too mild and sweet after all these years. I wasn't particularly fond of the taste and mouthfeel, but it was still good for a beer. I'm not an expert on aging but I would say 5 years is a bit too long to age this beer. It definitely loses its potency and strength.

Still a good treat for those who like Unibroue and/or dark beers.

Next Unibroue review will be a 5-year Grande Reserve 17 on new years eve.

12 oz bottle. Pours deep brown with little head. Not much aroma. Excellent aftertaste. Great Belgian tribute.

A: opaque; dark brown with mahogany at the edges if held to the light; 1 finger khaki head that receded to a wispy cap; no lacing;

S: clove and Belgian yeast are dominant; a hint of citrus in the background;

T: Belgian yeast for a moment, then nutmeg and clove get added it; no bitterness; not much roastiness;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; moderately dry finish;

O: easy drinking for the style - mainly because of the lower ABV; would paid well with food;

This is definitely a tasty beer, with all the qualities of a very fine quad, but there is something missing, taste if the dark fruits is there, mouthfeel is great but i believe the low abv of this beer doesnt do the very nice taste of the beer justice....you are just waiting for that boozy hit at the end of the sip which never comes....could be a lot better.

On tap at Pizza Paradiso- Dupont Circle. Treading the fine line between a black IPA and a dark saison. More tart than roasty, yeasty, smooth and slick. A real gender bender.

A welcoming beer at the forefront with nice carbonation head and lacing. Appearance is mainly dark with red/brown highlights when put up to a light source. Smells like a Belgian dark with floral and fruity notes and tastes like a Belgian dark with a background of roast, clove, floral and sweetness from fruit. Beer has a nice carbonation that doesn't quite pack a punch - although the alcohol content is above six percent, it is not very noticeable. Overall an enjoyable and easy-to-drink beer.
