Drawing on Quebec folklore, Unibroue chose the name Trois Pistoles to honour the city’s historic importance and pay homage to the legend of the Black Horse. Conjured up by a priest to help build a new church, this incarnation of the devil ran off when its bridle was removed. Because construction was still underway when the horse vanished, a stone remains missing from the church to this day.

Poured from a 12-oz bottle several months within its date range into a goblet.
Look: Nearly opaque brown with a thin white head that quickly reduced to light lacing.
Nose: Pleasant, not intense, but all gentle aromas of dark roast, raisin, dark brown sugar, dried stone fruit, and just a hint of licorice.
Taste: The attack follows the nose very closely. Just sweet enough. The finish has just enough bitterness to balance the slight sweetness of the attack.
Mouthfeel: Medium in thickness, near perfect carbonation.
Overall: This has long been one of my two favorite Belgian Dark Strong Ales. It’s easy drinking, while strong enough to stand up to hearty meat dishes. I grieve that Unibroue evidently is no longer distributing this brew (and at least a couple others of theirs) in the US.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and slightly chilled, 473mL in a pint glass. From their World's Best Mix 4-pack at The Roundhouse Centre LCBO on Howard Ave. in nearby Windsor. Canned October/25. My 10th beer from the Chambly, Quebec brewery, and 3rd for 2026. With Sundae the cat's tacit permission, and love...

Beer Advocate 20th Anniversary and Untappd 10th Anniversary Review #9. Reviews #1-5 can be found on Untappd (link in profile). 473ml can purchased from the James Street LCBO in Waterford, ON.
L: Very dark brown, almost opaque, with burgundy highlights when held to the light. Two finger beige cap subsides about midway through drinking. Some speckles of lacing on the goblet glass.
S: Effervescent yeast and dark malts impart spicebox, black cherry, prune and dark rum. A bit perfumey, with mild herbal hop profile. Some toasted bread, chocolate and raisin in background.
T: Largely follows the nose.
F: Full-bodied mouthfeel. High cola-like carbonation, with moderate sweetness mid-palate. Significant spice precedes long, dry and warming finish. Exquisitely balanced.
O: An absolute mammoth of a beer, Trois Pistoles is famous for a reason. It's one of the best Belgian Strong Dark Ales out there. A true classic, this beer has withstood the test of time.

Light body for a strong ale, and a nice, malt flavor. Subtle banana smell and taste. A good Belgian style ale, but not a great one.

12 oz. Bottle poured into generic pint glass.
Ten-and-a-half (10.5) years after the “best by” date. Stored at a fairly constant 60 degrees F. Surprise find deep in our pantry.
Drinks great. Mellow as heck. No off-flavors. Dark fruits. Acceptable carbonation. Crisp and refreshing.
Thank you Canada!

Wonderful dark ale. Light sweetness, heavy pungency, a real kick in the gonads. Great texture, too, very creamy and foamy. A lovely beer, one of Unibroue's best.

Copenhagen 23/12 2021. 3,41 cl bottle from Meny, Borups Allé, Frb. F. Old church-like building with three towers on the label.
Pours murky, dark brown with a mid-sized off-white head. Stable. Settles as thin layer of foam struggling to cover the surface of the beer. Moderate lacing.
Aroma is fairly intense with a dark, sweet malty odor mingling with a boozy, sourish scent of grains. Dark, fermented fruit. Plums and apricots. Alcohol. Sweet caramel and toffee.
Medium strong carbonation. Slightly thick, oily, soft, smooth, tingling texture.
Flavor is intense with a strong sweetness followed by a moderately strong bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet toffee with a light touch of dark alcohol. Lingers for a while. Finish is pure caramel.
Potent, dark and very strong. But they manage to hide it behind a sweet, fruity veil of flavor.
