First brewed in 1996, Eau Benite "Oh-Bey-Knit" (Holy Water) was developed to offer the characteristics of a bottle refermented triple with a slightly lower alcohol content. This is a refreshing pale golden ale with a slightly fruity nose and a pleasant character.

Picked this up in a two pack of bombers from Unibroue. Pours a nice light orange color with a huge head. It doesn't leave much lacing down the sides. The aroma is very sweet and has some floral characteristics to it. The taste starts light and with some bitterness but rounds out to a nice fruity flavor and some heat from the alcohol. This is a great beer and as a bottle conditioned limited release, something i would pick up again if I ever saw it.

Minor haze to the golden color. Modest head but it leaves no lace at all. Other than that, it looks acurate to the style.

The smell is true to Belgian Tripel--mostly pale malt with a strong presence of alcohol and some Belgian yeast. It's clean and refreshing.

The taste mimics the smell in nearly every way. Perhaps the alcohol tastes stronger/warmer than I expected. The pale malt briefly starts the taste with the Belgian yeast kicking in quickly and dominating the overall flavor. Rich bodied as expected but with very little sweetness. The carbonation is a bit elevated which cuts the thickness. The finish is warming but fades rapidly in the aftertaste.

Appearance: Poured with two fingers of head that did stick around but did not lace at all. The body is a cloudy dirty blonde with carbonation that is a bit mild for the style.

Smell: Predominantly pear with mild cloves and allspice notes with some grain and honey in the background. I usually expect a bit more potency from a Tripel and while it didn't need warming to come out, a little bit more oomph would have been welcome.

Taste: It's fruity, but I can't quite place all the fruits. There are pear notes, as well as apricot, tangerine and I want to say very mild passionfruit (mild as that bitter touch isn't there) as some clove and allspice take over with a bit of a doughy and then dry bread ending with a mild bitter kick.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation does kind of disappear half way through the beer which is disappointing, and I think would have offered the beer some needed levity. The transitioning also doesn't quite hit the mark, as I'm getting panettone made without sugar kind of vibe due to the odd spice and weird end. It does offer a wonderful mixed fruit, spice and bread aftertaste mostly devoid of the odd bitter note.

Drinkability: Refreshing yes, and the dry bitter end doesn't get out of control and lends itself to keep drinking to quench. Medium bodied, but it's an odd dichotomy. The beer comes across as lighter taste then a regular Tripel, but the viscosity doesn't quite match up. Conceals it's ABV very well.

Final Thoughts: So Unibroue's La Fin du Monde has been at the top of my rating list for a good long time, so while I knew this wasn't going to compare, I did get excited to get another Tripel from these guys. This offering is still quite good, but it pales in comparison to "The End of the World". Honestly, this strike me as someone tried to make a Light Tripel and that while it didn't quite work out ideally, I'd be blessed if my failures turned out like this. It's an odd one for sure, as I guess if I wanted to drink something high class, during the summer in the heat, this would work...but that's such a niche time. Anyways, upon re-reading this, my commentary seems a bit negative for what is still a fundamentally good beer and worth your time. Just not worth your time if you have other Unibroue offerings to try ahead of this one.

Poured a 355ml can into a chalice. A big two finger fluffy white head on a hazy deep gold. Good head retention. Lots of lacing.
Spice and yeast in the nose.
Malt flavours emerge as it warms. Slightly prickly finish.
A very smooth and creamy mouthfeel.
A fine triple. Very drinkable. True to the style and well worth a try.

330 ml bottle, sampled August 2011, from Ølkonsortiet, Aalborg. BB date 31.12.2012. ABV is 7.7%. Golden colour, slightly hazy, huge white head. Strong sweetish stale malty and "unfresh" aroma, also some spicy notes. The flavour has some unfresh malts and acidic notes, hints of spices. Clearly past its prime.

Hazy light orange with.a moderate head. Yeasty malt nose. Medium malt body, quite fruity. Effervescent feel, not quite up to other Unibroue beers.

Hazy amber color in the first half pour; very cloudy after swirling for the second pour. The head is almost as tall as the liquid in the glass. The head dropped quickly, but was being replenished by strong flow of fine bubbles from below. Only a couple of spots of lacing left on the glass.

Strong spicy/musty smell with a faint fruit. Swirling the glass kicked up more fruit and a little bit of barnyard.

Unusual or exotic fruit flavor that I couldn't identify. Slightly tart. A a sharp, cracker-like malt that showed up stronger after swirling in the lees from the bottle. The aftertaste was more tart tending towards some funk.

Excessively foamy at the start of the glass. The carbonation calms down by the end. Heavy body, almost like drinking soup.

Very interesting fruit flavors. Be sure to try this both without and with the lees mixed in. There are two really good ales in a single glass that just depend on how much it gets stirred up.

From notes 4/26/12: Pours a slightly hazy golden orange producing a huge 3+ finger finely bubbled, white head that leaves minor lacing. The head recedes very rapidly for its size but settles in to a lasting 1 finger cap. Aroma is Unibroue yeast with spice and fruity esters of apricot, pineapple, apple, pear, and banana in that order;honey, coriander and alcohol. Taste is similar to the nose but lavishly sweet with more aggressive esters, especially the apricot. Buttery and peppery in the finish and aftertaste. The alcohol while moderate through out the pour becomes prominent as the brew warms. Absolutely wonderful!

It is probably the most drinkable high fermentation beer from Unibroue as the spicy side of their yeast is less present. It is not too sweet but still round and smooth. It is as refreshing as a tripel can be!

Serving: Bottle

Pours a cloudy glowing gold with a big, dirty-white Unibroue head settles to a funny little cap that's easily roused, with swooping lacing.  The aroma and flavor walk hand in hand: cinnamon roll dough with cloves, tart pears, crusty bread, dusty old wood. The flavor is a little more muted than the nose, but not much. The beer is also a bit more brightly fruity and less earthy/Bready than other triples I've had (and, indeed,  more so than Fin du Monde). It is drinkable, as refreshing as this type of beer can be, delicious and smooth. I would definitely have this one again and again, and am glad that I FINALLY got to try it.
