La Fin Du MondeLa Fin Du Monde

Brewed by:
Quebec, Canada

Style: Tripel

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
La Fin du Monde was developed through 18 months of research on a unique strain of yeast originating from Europe. It is brewed in honor of the intrepid European explorers who believed they had reached the “end of the world” when they discovered North America ‘the new world’. This triple-style golden ale recreates the style of beer originally developed in the Middle Ages by trappist monks for special occasions and as such it was the first of its kind to be brewed in North America.

look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25

Appearance: A very nice hazy orange with a fluffy white head.

Smell: Aggressive aromas of spices, malts, summery fruits, but most of all yeast.

Taste: Similar to the smell up front – lots of yeast, lots of malt. Some pineapple, pear and assorted fruitiness, as well as some spice-like notes. Big and bready flavours, yeasty throughout. A bit of sourness, especially in the finish. There is some pepperiness at the back of the throat. The alchohol makes its presence known more than I am used to in a Tripel, but it is still quite mild – hiding behind the sweetness up front and sneaking out in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, light yet rich; just a bit of pep in the carbonation.

Overall: Very good. This is missing a little bit of the subtlety and complexity of some of the better Belgian Tripels, but La Fin Du Monde is still an exemplary representative of the style.

A: 4.5 Hazy orange, honey color with large off-white head.

S: 4.25 Lots of Belgian yeast with all the classic aromas: bananas, cloves, orange zest, pineapple, and a little vanilla. Also a good amount of malt and some grassiness.

T: 4.25 Big malty, yeasty sweetness up front with many of the same profiles as on the nose. The esters and citrus flavors work really well together. There’s some soft spice at the end that turns into a bit of alcohol burn.

M: 4.25 Nice carbonation and light, but not to thin. A little dryness on the finish. Very refreshing considering how sweet and strong this beer is.

O: 4.25 Great beer overall and an excellent example of a Tripel. Maybe not quite as much going on as some of the Belgians, but this is still right up there with them.
