Marshfield vacation.
Bottle to wine glass.

Aroma is brown sugar, cinnamon, brown bread. Dark brown, foamy, creamy, tan head. Tastes like a Bahamian spiced rum cake. Yummy and thick. Alcohol is present, but not offensive. Feel is thick and creamy, but bubbly as well.Really nice. Trois Pistoles on crack.

Appearance: Poured with two and a half fingered of head that stayed around and laced like crazy. The body is a deep opaque black with only hints of brown. A degree of yellow yeast made it's presence known at the bottom of the bottle, as well as small, noticable black specks near the head.

Smell: Dark roasted malt with plum, fig, chocolate and cherries with a well tempered dark caramel scent. Warming was not required to bring out this complex array, but a bit more potency would be nicer. Still, quite good though.

Taste: Starts with a rich caramel and berry malt that turns to a swath of chocolate, plum, fig and hints of coffee and vanilla before a hint of earth, nuts and subdued malt rounds out the experience. A slight bit more bitterness and maybe a bit more punch would have got the five.

Mouthfeel: The shifting between flavours is amazing, and the carbonation helps to impart a silkiness to the brew. The aftertaste is also a dark caramel and vanilla, berry touch. If that aftertaste would go just a bit further and not fade quite as fast as it does, it would be perfect.

Drinkability: When a beer is three quarters done before I can adequately express it's characterisitics, you've done a good job. Surprisingly light bodied and easy on the system. It masterfully conceals it's high alchohol content. It's also refreshing and flavourful.

Final Thoughts: I don't think the name does the beer justice, it's certainly not "Terrible", and to imply it's "The Terrible" because it's a badass beer doesn't quite fit the title either. This beer is far too graceful and well executed for such a name. If I was to suggest a new name, it would be Euphorie Sombre or Dark Euphoria. So yes, this beer is great, no bones about it, but that is what you get when you buy from Unibroue. Another exceptional offering.

A: Pours a dark mahogany color with 2+ fingers of head that fades down to a nice cap that leaves sparse, splotchy lacing

S: Belgian yeast, fruit, and spices up front along with a sweet, malty background

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with the spices and goes into the fruity Belgian yeast. Some nutty maltiness follows, along with some earthiness and vague caramel notes. Finishes with lingering yeast influence and maltiness

M: Medium-full bodied with moderate fine carbonation

O: A very well done quad that makes for a nice sipper. Alcohol is well hidden with the yeast influence, which makes it quite drinkable. Definitely a classic, regardless of the Canadian origins

6 month old bottle : Opaque black color. Super foamy and light creamy beige 4-5 finger head in the tulip, lasting around 20 minutes, producing some good legs and a strong lacing. Flavors of prunes, plums, raisins, cherries, wood, maple, black liquorice, toffee, soft cheese, light cocoa and coffee, Belgian yeast, herbal spices. Silky full body with extra crispy carbonation. Very strong finish, long tongue coat but not overly aggressive, sharp bitter leathery and earthy feel, thick malty and fruity sugars, thick barrel aged feel. Got lots of complexity, pretty well balanced, although not very accessible. Kinda vinous and deeply acidic, some appetizer qualities, still quite fresh and tender from the yeast. Superb taste and body, incredibly rich and smooth. Almost feel like a Quad, heavily alcoholic and warming, almost burning! Perfect winter beer, fits well for festive activities. Yet strangely, I wouldn't drink this one too warm, drink it rather cold, it gets putrid and pukey when at room temp. Overall superb quality craft.

This Belgian strong dark ale from Canada is unbelievably great stuff. Another gift from my older bro....THANKS....He runs a major beer distributer outfit and leaves me some killer samples in my Dad's fridge as we take turns visiting Dad from different out of town locations. This one deserves all the flowery hype ( of which I'm not very good ) you can muster. I'll just say it's damn good.... I really like these deeply rich/powerful/high dollar Ales.

Poured from a 341mL bottle into a chalice
L- Deep chocolate brown with a slight red tinge. The head is off-white, pillowy, and has impressive retention for such a high abv.
S- Cinnamon, nutmeg, blackberry, dry red wine, other dark fruit, hints of vanilla and caramel. Also strong alcohol smell.
T- Same as smell with addition of yeast, slight bitterness, and stronger wine-like taste. For 10.5% you can barely taste the alcohol.
F- Very appealing woody/grainy feel with a slight bitterness and nice dryness to balance the dark fruit sweetness. After you swallow a strong alcohol warmness is present.
O- This is the beer to get your wine friend into beer. Amazingly complex while being perfectly balanced. I just wish it was easier to get where I live.
