Don De DieuDon De Dieu
Notes: Don de Dieu (Gift of God) was the name of the ship that Samuel de Champlain sailed on his mission to “explore and discover the vast and perilous land of America” in the name of the King of France. His travels led to the founding of Quebec City in 1608.

Inspired by this great adventure, Unibroue created Don de Dieu—an abbey-style triple wheat beer refermented in the bottle. Soft and round, it has delicately nuanced fruity and hoppy notes.

Presentation: 12oz brown bottle with a beautiful label and foil neck. Best before 03/09/03. "The Don de Dieu in Tadoussae, June 3, 1608, under the command of Samuel de Champlain de Brouage, commissioned by the King of France to pursue the exploration of this vast and inhospitable lancd called America."

Appearance: Golden with a magnificent orange hue. The lace is thin, white.

Smell: Light fruity esters, toffee, delicate spice and pale malts in the aroma.

Taste: Smooth and creamy mouthfeel. An outrageous fruitiness of blissful sweet apricots come to mind. A soft hop twang follows with some gentle spice, esters and pepper notes. The beer then goes crisp & dry (no doubt from the wheat). Toffee/toasted malt flavours also come forward as the beer warms, as does some honey-like qualities. Finishes with spicy alcohol notes, slightly bready, grain dryness/light grain tannins and a touch of earthy yeast flavour.

Notes: At 9% abv this beer is suprisingly light and refreshing. It's also one of the best beers that I've ever tasted.

it poured a cloudy yellow orange, with a thick white foam head. I noticed the smell of apples, and something mysterious. (a good mysterious) it had a sweet and citrusy warming taste. a very bubbly light champagne and smooth feel to it. Very tasty brew. Somthing to enjoy and relax with or have with a hearty meal

cheers!

Pours an opaque, deep orange body with lots of creamy, pearly white head at the top. The aroma is rich with wheat and soft floral features, a very subtle spice and faint candy-like sweetness can also be detected. The taste is sweet and fruity at the front of the palette with flavours branching out towards spiciness and mildly earthy hop bitterness at the sides and back respectively. Smooth taste with prickly carbonation and an otherwise silky smooth mouthfeel, with a finish that echoes out wonderfully. Unibroue, you're doing my Québecois heart proud!

A: Pours a golden yellow color with 2+ fingers of head that slowly fades down to a nice cap

S: Lots of spice and fruitiness from the yeast up front, along with some light floral notes, some wheat, and overall general sweetness

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with a mellow fruity sweetness, followed by light spices and floral notes. Goes into some very light wheat notes before finishing with more fruity sweetness

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Fine and bubbly

O: A very nice BSPA (classified as a triple wheat ale on their website) with a nice sweet overtone that pairs nicely with the fruity and spicy yeast. Very easy to drink, and potentially dangerous at 9%. Definitely worth giving this one a shot, especially at the price point

Corked 750 ml bottle. Hazy orange/yellow in color and the nose on it picks up faint aromas of bread, yeast, pair, white grapes, pineapple, banana. Not a heavy nose on this beer. Taste is lovely. Notes of pears, bread, apples, and pineapples. Good, crisp carbonation, and very refreshing. No detection of the 9% at all. This can get you in danger in a hurry if not careful. A lovely beer I treat myself to every blue moon.

A very active carbonation keeps the white lace alive, tiny particles of yeast float around the cloudy pale orange brew.

Lots in the nose … a striking ester and phenolic presence with a ripe fruity slant. Hint of powdery chalky yeast in the nose also.

Thick medium body with a layered maltiness, raw honey and ripe fruit come to mind. Higher alcohols jump out on to the taste buds with crazy estery and lightly solvent sweet and spicy flavours. More ripe fruitiness and bitter phenols battle it out and the phenols win as they clean house to make room for a semi-dry finish.

This is one wild and strong ale … Belgian style at that! This is one beer I don’t drink enough of and should.

I don't know which is my favourite now, this or La fin du Monde. Oh Lord, what a delicious brew. Pours a pale gold with a hint of orange. Looks like a sunset. Big, fluffy head with staying power. That sucker didn't diminish at all. Stayed two fingers and remained two fingers. Bonus points for that. Such a wonderful scent. Pale malts, cloves, bananas, apricots, pears, oranges, lemons, even a bit of grapefruit and other various exotic fruits. With an alcohol kick, of course. Oh God, what a heavenly taste. Sweet, smooth and delicious. Bananas at first show up on the tongue, entering like a close friend. Then KAPOW!!! It's a mob of fruits and malts. Their having a party. But not a rowdy party, a civilized party. More of a social gathering. Crowded, but polite. And ever so good. A nice, creamy mouthfeel that coats the throat and goes down smooth. Sorry though, needs a little more thickness for a perfect score. Drinkable? Oh yeah. I could drink this all day, every day. I dunno know. I think this and La fin du Monde are now tied. Hopefully, this will now be easier to get in Ontario.

Served at the Michigan house Cafe/Red Jacket Brewpub in Calumet MI in nearly the perfect tulip, very close to the image on the bottle.

Thick creamy head climbs high up the tulip and retains very long. Golden-tan wheat cololr with very prominent bubbles.

Slightly sour sweet smell.

Tastes sweet with very slight sour and (not so slight) alcohol flavors mingling very well with definite wheaty malt flavor.

Lots of carbonation and a mid-light body make a very refeshing brew.

I would love to drink these all day long, but it would be VERY short day due to the alcohol.

a: This was a cloudy straw colored yellow. It poured with a big foamy white head. Good lace and retention.

s: Big wheaty banana aromas here. Small amounts of floral hops and alcohol. Smells somewhat sour overall.

t: This tastes like a big wit beer. Sour grains, bananas, peppery cloves, and a dry, floral finish. There is a little alcoholic heat as well.

m: This super thick and silky, it is superbly carbonated as well.

d: This might be my favorite from Unibroue. A superb warm weather sipper.

Reviewed on 2/17/2010. Bottle. Pours a hazy light orange with a small white head. Aroma of sweet fruits, melon, citrus, Belgian yeast. Flavor of bready malts, sweet light citrusy fruits, and Belgian yeast with a sweet finish. A pleasant surprise actually -- very tasty!

Poured from bottle to tulip. Coppery in color with a few fingers of off-white, rocky head. Nice fruity aromas come from the pour, with green apples and white grapes carried by a wheat current. Flavors hit fruity as well. Crisp green apples and juicy white grapes, with some honeydew, lemon creme, caramel, and wheat balancing the more tart fruit flavors.

My bottle was a foam bomb. I hardly poured any, and it was gushing over the top. I wish i would have had a big stein or something to contain it. What I can see of the beer, it pours a somewhat hazy golden color. The head is white, insane, and long lasting. It will take a long time to get everything from the bottle into the glass.
The nose is a sweet, somewhat fruity, malty, semi wild aroma. Some spices in the aroma, can't say which ones, though. Pleasing aroma.
Taste - There's a wheat component to this beer. I do get the banana and some cloves. I also get a bit of a slightly wild flavor, with just a slight bitterness to it.
Body is decent. There's a bit of a pop in my throat from it that is pleasing.
Very interesting beer. It was one hell of a gusher, and that wasn't fun. Everything else makes up for it.

Another offering from Unibroue and a fine one at that. Pours a nice glass. Good head and a straw/cloudy glass. Nice nose. Fruity and malty.Bananas etc. I love the taste of this brew, Tangy balanced fruit taste. with some malt present. I t just doesn't get any better. This beer rivals any Belgian beer. Absolutely great!!

Note: 10-08-08 This beer has an over the top yeast, bread or biscuit flavor. This is still a fine beer but not as pleasing as I originally indicated.

This is a special beer for me. It is my first belgian. My first beer that I consider exotic. It is an opaque orange to straw color. Has a white head with good retention and decent lacing. Tons and tons of carbonartion floading up out of it. This beer smells good. As soon as I open the bottle the grassy aroma hits me. It is sweet and delicious in smell-slightly fruity. When I drink this, it has tons of flavor. It has that grassy smell, it is slightly sweeter than I would expect, but it is delicious. I just cannot identify the fruity flavor, slightly citrus, slighltly spiced, and slightly like musk mellon. The beer is light to medium bodied and dry. It has no alcohol taste, but great alcohol warming. Not something I can hammer down, but not something I get tired of quickly either.

A: Crystal clear golden color with less than half a finger of white head. Really nice clarity for the style. Also the head did not take a half hour before the beer was drinkable.

S: Kind of a tight nose all things considered. Little bit of an Apple/Pear nose going on. Little bit of candi sugar the their very distinctive house yeast. The nose is probably the worst part of this beer.

T: Nice mix of grain yeast and sweetness. It is quite complicated without being overwhelming. This would really be a nice beer as an intro into craft beer.

M: Little dry in the finish. Has a little more to go and it would be a little more enjoyable if it were a touch more dry. Well carbonated.

D: A very easy drinking beer with enough complexity to make you come back. I have not had this beer in quite a few years but it is solid. One of those beers you see on the shelf all the time and ignore but probably should not.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter.

A: Pours a light, fairly clear golden copper. Soapy white head.

S: Fruity, spiced and a musty clove and yeasty nose. Slighty subdued for the style, but definitely a CBSPA.

T: My best description is delicate. Lightly hopped, yet well balanced. Dark fruit notes mingled nicely with light fruit, toffee and vanilla undertones. Clove and some peppery spices are faint. Not overly complex, but very enjoyable.

M: Good carbonation, medium light body, very creamy and smooth with a nice crisp dry finish. A delight in the mouth!

D: Very good, Could sip on these each night.

Good show again, Unibroue.
