Kinda like Daytime's big, dark and scary sidekick, this ale is packed full of highly roasted malts then bitterly balanced with fistfuls of the dankest hops. Not for the lunch crowd or the faint of heart.

Brewed in the style of an American Black Ale. Available previously in 22 oz. bombers, currently brewed in 12 oz. bottled 6 pack format. Rotating seasonal release.
Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a tulip glass.
(Appearance) Pours a frothy crisp head of a golden tan color over a deep caramel brown body with dense mahogany highlights and moderate carbonation. Retention is very good and lacing is light and spotty. 4
(Smell) Aromas of bold citrusy hops, juicy tropical fruits, delicate pine resins with a moderate bitterness, Medium toasted caramel body with very light roast and grain impact, a pinch of black patent malt. Fairly clean, hop-driven aroma. 4
(Taste) More roast, buttery caramel grains and toasty black patent malt with a lesser citrus hop impact than the aroma suggests. Piney resins, ripe citrus grapefruits. A bit rough around the edges. 3.5
(Mouthfeel) Texture is smooth, lightly syrupy, moderately residual, clean and mildly dry. Carbonation is moderate, generating a medium frothiness and a lightly crisp finish. Body is medium for the style and medium+ overall. Balance is nearly even hoppy bitter and grainy malt to malt sweetness. Alcohol presence is light and there are no off characters. 4.25
(Overall) An excellent-smelling Black Ale that suffers just a bit from some sharp graininess in the flavor department. Even with some time down the road, the flavor is considerably well-preserved with lots of lingering citrus juiciness and piney hop character. Another solid offering from Lagunitas, I'm very impressed with the reformatting of these ales in the more accessible 12 oz. bottled offerings and consider them amongst the best craft beer value packs available. 4

Unknown vintage; drank 4/4/15 @ the Yarchives.
Dark brown appearance with khaki flotsam.
HUGE dark tan head (careful pouring!); frothy, tree-rung lace.
Pickle, smoke & orange citrus nose; odd & unappealing.
Medium mouthfeel.
Pickle, acrid smoke & creamed coffee flavors up front; faint orange juice finish.
Simply terrible.

22oz bottle. No dating information found.
Dark brown colored body, with reddish back lit highlights. Two fingers of light tan head, settles down to a pillowy cap. Leaves behind some small webs of lacing.
Aroma of roasted malts and flowery hops.
Taste of roasted malts (coffee and chocolate), with floral hops and a touch of citrus.
Medium plus mouthfeel. Initially smooth and then turns to drying bitterness. Very good carbonation.
Reminds me of a hopped up cola with a drying finish.

I love hoppy black ales and this is a favorite. Poured from a bomber into a tulip glass. Rich dark brown color with a nice beige head and good lacing. Citrus smell with a bit of smokiness. Pleasant roasted malt taste over a fruity citrus and chocolate base. Nice smooth, rich feel, great beer!

I felt this one growing on me as I drank it. I noticed others commenting on how there is both coffee/chocolate, but also citrus. I agree - I taste both, and it somehow works. I've noticed that high ABV often goes unnoticed with darker beers like this. The ABV here seems perfect. Very worth the price of under $3 for a pint&6oz. bottle. I've tended towards lighter beers lately, but this one has me wanting to try more porters or stouts.
