look: 4.25 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 5 | overall: 4.75

Look - Clear dark orange color, a finger of off white head, a few patches of lacing left behind.

Aroma - Hop resin, faint pine, mango, floral, sugar cookie sweetness. The aroma is good but a little subdued.

Taste - Dried apricot, hint of pine, floral notes, rich bread crust malt body, the sweetness balances out the hops, dry and yeasty finish. Delivers a hop punch without an insane amount of bitterness.

Feel - On the heavier side of medium, no alcohol warmth, slightly oily, nice carbonation, dry. You'll be hard pressed to find an 8.2% Imperial IPA that drinks this easy.

Overall - This is my kind of Double/Imperial IPA. It's hoppy but has a big malt backbone to back it up. The drinkablilty for such a big beer is off the charts.

Look - Clear orange color with thin head, but substantial legs that never really disappear.

Smell - Overwhelming hops, but upon further examination there is also a clear metallic smell with just a hint of citrus. I suppose there is some malt smell, but it is hard to parse from the pine.

Taste - This is a hops heavy beer. The flavors seem to hit in an order - grapefruit, pine, a bit of nickel and then clearly the hops. The combination of warming from the 8.2% and the hop punch it packs is honestly quite nice, but not extraordinary. Incredibly bitter / dry aftertaste, this is where the grapefruit becomes obvious.

Feel - Definitely a full body, reminiscent of pine resin. Sharp the entire way down.

Overall - This is a fine Double IPA. Something I wouldn't mind drinking at a barbecue with a burger. Honestly it almost falls out of the category of summer beer and closer to a winter warmer, which should be drank exclusively while skiing or curled up reading poetry with a cat. Strong beer, good taste.

(12 oz bottle, coded 357 6 2... poured into a teku)

L: orange-amber liquid, slight (hop?) haze... tall, bouncy, messy dollop of foam... suds sink slowly, and it does leave some crusty swaths of lace

S: dried mango and fragrant flowers most prominent; orange and lemon highlights with a hard sniff... alcohol does cut through a little, bit of medicinal edge, maybe some bubblegum phenols as well... the depth and density of the hop aromas are powerful and inviting

T: spice and tropical fruit cream initially, supported by a somewhat sweetish, biscuity malt underbelly... little bit of toast and smoke in the finish... soft, intensely herbal/menthol bitterness rises in the aftertaste, along with a latent notes of black pepper and citrus oils

F: oily, resiny up front through the finish... slow, viscous roll across the palate... lasting bitter twang and tongue numbness... despite the thick-ish, resiny body to start, it virtually disappears midway through each sip - subdued flare of esophageal warmth after it goes down... damn disgustingly drinkable

O: bold beer all around... what it lacks in definition, it sort of makes up for by invigorating the palate and being curiously quite moreish with its remarkable mouthfeel

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a dark golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is pine, malts. Taste is well balanced, piney hops and caramel malts, some herbal notes, mild bitterness for a DIPA. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer, but I was expecting a bit more.

Picked up a bottle at grocery near Wilmington, Delaware. Poured with nice head into a pint glass. Smell and taste are very interesting. Smell is malty while taste to me is cloudy with alcohol aftertaste. You can taste the higher alcohol content in this beer. I enjoyed it but prefer Brown Shugga or Undercover from Lagunitas. This beer was nice for sipping and had me relaxed and smiling. I will probably try again.

Orangeish amber color with a foamy head which slowly recedes with some lacing. Slight haze. Aroma is citrus, herbs, dank fruit and bread malt. The flavor is pine, grapefruit, tropical notes, and spice. The bread malt smooths it out and makes it quite drinkable. A touch of alcohol vapor, heavy, but not over the top. I do enjoy this beer.

Great IPA with awesome malt and hops. It has this incredibly apparent sweetness to every sip that makes this IPA really stand out to me. Served on tap at Hillside Spot in Ahwatukee AZ.

I bought this since I liked the high ABV at 8.20.......bad boy me. But it had a nice smooth, yet a bit bitter taste loaded with hops, hops and more hops. You will enjoy this if you are a hops fan.

Bottle from Freddies.

A clear copper with a dense, large off-white head with excellent retention and lacing, this looks great! The nose is solid. A blend of pine, grapefruit and some citrus, this is quite hoppy. A mild caramel malt character is present. The palate opens moderately bitter with a blend of grapefruit, orange peel and some pine. The grapefruit flavor is mildly candied, pairing nicely with the caramel. A little sweet on the finish, this beer is medium-light in body and moderately carbonated. While sweeter than i typically i like IPAs, this is still quite solid.

Poured into a big mouth wine glass.
L- An orange, bubbly amber, thin head.
S- citrus and pine
Taste follows the nose, rather crisp and malty, with a sour aftertaste. A constant, thunderous rumble of hops upon the tongue, which Feels, Overall, like a stroll on a sunday afternoon. A warm, refreshing pine grove, yet with a chilly sea breeze and a lingering, golden-orange sunset. Aggressive pine: not my cup of tea.

Looks good but not great, smells kind of sweet I guess, but also tastes kinda sweet so it makes sense. The malt sort of overpowers the hops in my opinion. Relatively balanced but leans a little malty. Easy to drink though, interesting flavors, nothing crazy but a good beer.

Pours golden amber with a medium head that lasts a minute or two. Amazing lacing. Aromas and taste of citrus, apricot and some pine. You can taste the booze as an aftertaste, but it's not too strong. A great DIPA.

Clear tea colour on pour with slightly more than an inch thick head. Nice looking head with good lacing.
Honey, apricot, pine and citrus peel.
Great complexity on palate, grapefruit, hops and good amount of bitter astringency.
Overall, a cool IPA that made into my IPA collection list.

This beer is a hop lovers delight, the hops are definitely at the forefront of this beer. This is a sipping beer do to higher ABV and high IBU. It pours a nice orange color and smell of pine and citrus, and leaves a nice lacing in a tulip glace. Overall a really nice Double IPA.

Nice golden-amber color
Smell is lovely, clean, apricot. Mild nose, at least at 46F.
Taste is complex, bitter, classic. Evolves a lot in the mouth. Apricot and citrus. A bit malty. Doesn't quite come together as great.
Mouthfeel is very good indeed.
Finish is long, bitter in a slightly astringent way.

Clear amber double with nice heading. Great hoppy grapefruit smells which carries into the flavor. Slick texture medium body. Delicious hop feast in this proper double IPA.

The beer is a clear amber color with lots of carbonation bubbles. There was a mousse-like head that lasted for a long time. The beer had a nice aroma of mild alcohol, floral hops, slight fruit and citrus smells, and maybe a little spice. No noticeable malts. Lots of floral hop flavor and then flavors of citrus fruits. It has a nice sweetness and ends with a nice creamy feeling. The bitterness is not overwhelming and the beer isn't as dry as typical with this style of beer. Great IPA flavors but very smooth and refreshing at the same time.

Nice pungent hop aroma, light amber with foamy beige head. Sticky lacing coats the glass. Taste is sharp and tangy, hops, citrus, caramel. Relatively smooth despite the hops and high %ABV, easy drinker. Nice!

Nice clarity, golden hue. Big, fluffy signature Lagunitas head with tons of diseased lace left behind.

Aromas of oranges, limes, slight onion and oregano.

Flavors of juicy, mellow orange, some grapefruit rind but not overly so, some bready notes, ending on cornbread, cracker, and pink grapefruit.

Feel is thick and juicy, even somewhat creamy, leaving a milky, honey finish on the palate. Nice carbonation level, too.

Overall, Maximus is a very decent IPA. I'd actually have this again. Not bad, not bad at all.

Lagunitas Brewing is truly one of those brewers that has *it*, and Maximus has *it* as well.

Let me start by noting I am not an IPA aficionado. I enjoy the darker brews and IPAs are those I drink to try something outside the normal for me. But if there were an IPA to make me stop and rethink that approach, this is the IPA to do it. Damn, was it good.

Clear amber color with light carbonation, distinct hues of yellow and orange when you turn the glass for a closer look. Though it doesn't pour a thick head, it has decent staying power with plenty of lacing to speckle the pint. The scent produced is absolutely amazing - a sweet citrusy smell, hints of honey, and all of it mixing perfectly with the perfect touch of hops, artistry at work. Though it was more carbonated than I like and astringent to the tongue, the carbonation dies out quickly and leave a smooth liquid down. The taste matched the smell to perfection, as I was gulping this bad-boy faster than I should and forced myself to slow down to enjoy. In the end, I probably have found what is my most favorite IPA and I think I will be hard pressed to find one better.

Tons of sweet fruity, orangy/mango flavors at the beginning, some alcohol heat on the middle, the hops show up on the finish. Sorta sticky, piney hops - nothing off balance. There is a "juicy" sort of taste to the flavor of the hops which makes it very interesting. Lots of malt to hold up the hops but definitely not a Stone or Ballast Point in regards to bitterness levels. Mouth feel is a bit creamy, very nice carbonation. Overall a great double IPA. Some of the double IPAs out there can be a bit overwhelming in terms of alcohol and hops but this one is very balanced and easy to drink.

L- pours 2 fingers length head with lots of carbonation. Amber color

S- orange peel, lemon, grapefruit, floral

T- floral hops taste the most prominent with orange, grape fruit and a piney finish added. Very smooth!

Wow I like the hop stoopid and it has better ratings overall but I honestly like this one better. I think this beer is more well balanced, smoother, and has a better taste profile also.
Both are great though.

Very pale amber color, brilliantly clear. Pours a biggish white head, quite creamy and long lasting.

Rich malty nose, somewhat gentle fruity hop notes (muted by head?)

Huge hit of malty sweet and fruity hops from the beginning. Not the typical hop bomb DIPA. Stronger malt presence and a softer hop character. Overall skews more heavily sweet than I would like...needs a tweak more fermentation or a bit more bitterness.

Medium-full body, moderate carbonation. Definitely some alcoholic warming.

Not what I expected, but a pleasant big malt, sorta big hop beer. Good aromas and flavors, but skews a little too malty sweet for my liking.

12oz. bottle

Pours deep amber orange with a dense creamy off-white foam head. Smells like dark honey, toffee, caramel, toasted bready malt, brown sugar, mild coconut, pineapple, guava, almost raspberry, some peach, mango, orange, papaya, candied grapefruit, with floral earthy herbal grass and spicy woody pine. Tastes like dark honey malt, some toffee, brown sugar, caramel, toasted bready grain, some orange, candied grapefruit, pineapple, papaya, mango, peach, guava, slight raspberry, with woody floral earthy herbs, dank grass and spicy pine. Feels medium-light bodied, creamy with moderate low carbonation. Overall a real nice tasting double IPA.
