look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

L- pours 2 fingers length head with lots of carbonation. Amber color

S- orange peel, lemon, grapefruit, floral

T- floral hops taste the most prominent with orange, grape fruit and a piney finish added. Very smooth!

Overall-

Wow I like the hop stoopid and it has better ratings overall but I honestly like this one better. I think this beer is more well balanced, smoother, and has a better taste profile also.
Both are great though.

Very pale amber color, brilliantly clear. Pours a biggish white head, quite creamy and long lasting.

Rich malty nose, somewhat gentle fruity hop notes (muted by head?)

Huge hit of malty sweet and fruity hops from the beginning. Not the typical hop bomb DIPA. Stronger malt presence and a softer hop character. Overall skews more heavily sweet than I would like...needs a tweak more fermentation or a bit more bitterness.

Medium-full body, moderate carbonation. Definitely some alcoholic warming.

Not what I expected, but a pleasant big malt, sorta big hop beer. Good aromas and flavors, but skews a little too malty sweet for my liking.

12oz. bottle

Pours deep amber orange with a dense creamy off-white foam head. Smells like dark honey, toffee, caramel, toasted bready malt, brown sugar, mild coconut, pineapple, guava, almost raspberry, some peach, mango, orange, papaya, candied grapefruit, with floral earthy herbal grass and spicy woody pine. Tastes like dark honey malt, some toffee, brown sugar, caramel, toasted bready grain, some orange, candied grapefruit, pineapple, papaya, mango, peach, guava, slight raspberry, with woody floral earthy herbs, dank grass and spicy pine. Feels medium-light bodied, creamy with moderate low carbonation. Overall a real nice tasting double IPA.

Pours a deep amber color with about one finger of off white head, some lacing.
Smells mostly of cedar and grapefruit, with some sweetness, and some floral notes.
Hops are almost all up front, and in back, grapefruit is immediate, followed by some pine, then quickly a mlaty sweetness, bitterness at the end is mild, nice.
Mouthfeel is moderate, and viscous, almost syrupy.
Overall, another solid imperial ipa, not one that breaks records in my book, but certainly a good choice, and for the price, lagunitas delivers a lot of bang for your buck, so plus one half star there.

The beer has a clear golden yellow color. The foam is white with small bubbles. The foam disappears at a leisurely pace, leaving little trace. Aromas of hops, tropical fruit. There are some peach, orange and little flowers. Some sweet notes of syrup. The flavors of the hops, and very little malt. Then comes the passion fruit and pineapple. After that, a fine hops bomb again. Followed by sweet peach, some citrus, orange, a little salt, syrup and pine in the back. Medium body. Moderate carbonated. A little dry and sweet, fresh with just enough bitterness.

getting a very heavy sweet malt aroma and taste as well. almost smells like a barleywine. None of the hop flavours/smells others are describing. slight bitterness on the back end. No datestamp on the bottle but my guess is this one has a bit of age on it. gonna have to try again fresh!

Dark orange color, 5/6" white head. Dropped lots of dry hop aroma, nicely done, mostly old school pine and grapefruit.

Taste doesn't impart as much in the way of hops as the aroma did. For whatever reason, I've felt that their pale ale does this better than their ipas. Lagunitas manages to drop a ton of hops without hitting the wallet too hard. This has a little crystal malt, mostly pale malt, stays thankfully out of balance. Hides alcohol nicely.

Like I said, good, but I prefer so many of their other hoppy beers more that impart more than just bitterness for the most part like this one.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass

A- pours a clear Amber color with a two-finger foamy and frothy head that retains long after the pour leaving some lacing behind

S- grainy and malty with notes of fruity hops, as well as some floral and pine notes, toasted grain crackers

T- fruity hops up front with notes of floral and citrus as well, toasted malt mid-palate, more fruitless in the finish

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that continues into a crisp finish, high drinkability

O- straight forward DIPA that doesn't really stand out, but drinks just fine for what it is and is highly drinkable

Pours a golden amber with a nice thick inch of head into a frozen mug.

Has a very smooth taste with excellent hop flavor.

This makes my list of favorite IPAs. Will be buying again.

This is my go-to beer these days. I love IPAs in general, but lately too much bitterness bothers me, drys out my mouth and throat, and sometimes even gives me a headache. Maximus has a satisfyingly hoppy bite at the end, but that's prefaced by so much creamy malty sweetness that, for my tastes anyway, the overall balance is perfect. It's so drinkable that the 8.2% ABV can easily sneak up on you. In which case, my headache only comes the next morning. It's also a big plus that this beer is pretty easy to find and is usually priced very reasonably. Cheers!

Pours a clear amber orange with a two inch white head. Great retention with lots of lacing. Smell is citrus and hop heavy, with fresh pine finish. Taste is malt heavy, with a strong rush of hop and grapefruit. Typical bitter finish of most DIPAs. Dry, yet smooth mouthfeel, with medium carbonation.

From a 22 oz bomber, pours a foggy orange with aa foamy off white head which leaves some nice lacing. Aroma is citrus, flavors of tropical fruit with a sweet malt backbone. Alcohol kind of sneaks up on you. Nice beer.

Maximus pours a copper color with a small, long lasting and lacing head. Nice fresh floral aroma. Taste is big with strong hoppy flavors, finishes wet and a bit sweet. Good body and feel. Overall very good big, but sweeter IPA.

Purchased a 6pk at the LCBO for around $16.00 or so. 341ml bottle served at 4deg C in a draught glass

A- Opens well and pours a 1/2" high white head that is gone in a minute or tow. Very dark gold colour and unfiltered.

S- Oodles of hops and sweet, sweet malt.

T- Nice hope profile both dry and wet. Nice sweetness that does not get cloy on you like the other DIPA's out there. Nice balance for a hop heavy brew

M- Dry and tart at the end as expected

O- Nice and hoppy. Very enjoyable. Glad it comes in 6's only

Food Pairing

This nice little brew went well with....... Coconut shrimp!

Enjoy!!

It's tough not compare this to Lagunitas amazing A Little Sumpin Sumpin Ale, and although Maximus is damn good, it's not on that level. A bit more malty and a bit more on the alcohol taste, but still really good.

Undated bottle into pint glass. Pours a clear, pale amber with a persistent eggshell-white head. Initial impression is pine, with slightly sweet tropical fruit with earthy and resinous hop underpinning. Sweetness becomes more pronounced as it warms. Medium mouthfeel -slightly sticky; medium carbonation. Alcohol is well hidden, making this dangerously easy to drink. Bitter finish.
My reviews of Lagunitas' offerings have been all over the board. Some I like; some I despise. This falls in the "kinda like" territory - I wouldn't seek it out, but I wouldn't be upset if somebody bought me a round.....

355 ml bottle served cold into a pint glass. Purchase from the LCBO for about $2.67 per bottle.

Appearance - Pours a slightly cloudy copper colored beer with a rich frothy head that measures over two fingers. Great retention and many swaths of lacing left behind.

Smell - Plenty of citrus with grapefruit, mango and melon being the stars. Lots of caramel malt too to keep things balanced.

Taste - Pretty much like the nose, just even more intense. More than adequate sweetness from the caramel and tropical fruits, yet enough bitterness on the other end to make this enjoyable. Just a really good easy to drink DIPA, that even considering the price and perhaps not being optimally fresh, I may just pick up a another six-pack.

Mouthfeel - Smooth yet well carbonated, robust body, but juicy and easy to repeatedly drink.

Overall- Maximus is simply put one of the most masterful DIPA's I've been fortunate enough to try. I will almost certainly be picking up a second six-pack of this divine treat.

Clear copper orange colour, 1.5 fingers white head, good lace. Smell is of sugar coated citrus fruit, hop dominant but certainly shows strong sweeter malt underpins. Taste is hoppy and fruity, orange and red grapefruit, mid palate malty sweetness, a little drying on the finish. Lightly carbonated, lightly slick medium body. Not bad but a bit sweet for what I prefer from the style.

Orange/Amber color with 2 inch creamy head. Plenty of lacing. Nose piney with notes of mango, orange peel, and a little funk. Taste is pine in the front. Notes of orange, caramel, and tropical fruit. Sweet finish that lingers. Pretty good IPA from them.

The usual (and well brewed) bitterness introduces the taste of this double IPA, until a surprise sweetness confuses your taste buds. Initially, this is a nice twist but the sweetness eventually becomes somewhat obtrusive.
Regardless, a decent brew. Great colour, nose and head.
Incidentally, this has been brewed in Illinois and not California.

APPEARANCE: Crystal clear, amber/orange. Lots of small bubbles rising. 2+ fingers of white foamy head. Head lasts forever. Major lacing down the glass. Served at about 60 F.
AROMA: Dank, Big pine, big caramel malt. Minor citrus peel.
TASTE: Pine is the big flavor here. Lots of it. Nice caramel malt in the background. Minor grapefruit. Bitterness is pleasant, really builds in the back of the mouth as you drink the beer.
FEEL: Medium full body. A little sticky. Drying on very finish. Carbonation is mild to average on the palate.
OVERALL: Piney up front, some nice sweetness from the malts, sticky. Nice bold flavors.

Picked up a mix six at the local market and this was one I was looking forward to trying. As near as I can tell from the code it was bottled on 1/26/16. From a 12 oz. bottle chilled in a 38 degree fridge in the cellar, allowed to sit for 10-15 minutes before opening, poured into a large stemmed wine glass.

Look: Very lively, lots of bubbles. Clear gold/amber color with a creamy 2 finger, off white head. Lots of lacing. Head eventually reduced to a steady thin foam that persisted to the end.

Smell: Initial hints of pine resin and citrus with sweet tones, maybe mango? Caramel?

Taste: First taste to register is the hop/pine followed by sweet flavors of fruit, mango, pineapple. As the glass warmed later the hop flavor became more prevalent.

Mouthfeel: Creamy yet crisp with a medium body, carbonation is evident but not overly so despite the very foamy pour.

Overall: This brew goes down easy like a session IPA but with 8.2% ABV things could get out of hand quickly. This could become one of my favorite go to beers to keep on hand for friends.
