a: dark copper and honey. pretty clear, lighter at the bottom of the glass. large 3 finger froth white head

s: passionfruit, dank mango, orange zest, ripe pear, sweet caramel and toffee malts, something bread in here as well. smells dark, sweet, and juicy

t: dank - follows the nose. this is well balanced, but on the sweeter side. mango, pineapple, apricot, grapefruits, sweet citrus zest. big caramel malt presence. subtle bitterness on the backend comes from a grapefruit flavor.

m: medium with a slightly dry finish. medium carbonation

o: head sticks around, as does the lacing. this is an interesting beer. it tastes slightly big, but its not too complex. i'm not sure how old this bottle is, but it is mostly the sweet citrus and malts i'm picking up on - not too bitter, and only at the end of the sip. its above 8% abv is completely hidden, so be careful. even though its sweet, still refreshing.

12oz to Duvel Tulip
8.2% ABV
Bottled 162_3: June 11, 2013

A – A decently clear and very translucent amber. A quite thin off-white head that manages to look decent. Whenever I put down the glass, I like the way the lacing mostly slides down the side of the glass, leaving little patches of it behind. It almost looks like it’s sparkling as the bubbles move, combine, and shrink.

S – Wood and slight pine. Some citrus, mostly a lemon zest with some subdued orange. I’m getting some grass coming out now, and the wood is gone; I think it evolved into a sweet malty smell. The sweet smell isn’t quite brown sugar, but it’s tending that way.

T – A sweetness up front, followed by some nice hop flavor, then a sweetness on the back end. The first flavor is like a sweet orange with some pine. It then rolls into a soft yet confident pine and grass. Lastly, the sweetness comes back, a little sweeter tasting, and I think I can pick up a tiny bit of vanilla in addition to the sweet orange and pine.

M – Medium bodied, pretty soft but still a nice carbonation level. Hugs pretty close to the tongue. The finish is pretty wet, being the driest in the middle cheeks.

D – I’m digging this beer, it has great hop flavor while not being rough or overly bitter. It has a sweetness that may deter some, but plays into my soft spot for Belgian ales. I get the good hop flavor, some smoothness, and some sweetness, so I think it’s well done and well-balanced, even though it would be valid to say it is a little sweet/malty for a DIPA. It’s quite drinkable although I wouldn’t say it’s very refreshing. If it was a little less sweet, then it would be more so; but after a glass of water, this would be a nice beer to relax to after sweating.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle, bottling code 135 3 (May 15th).

Appearance: A honey colored body, huge head fills the glass and leaves lacing all over. Top of the foam as a rocky look.

Smell: Sweet, oily hops, strong orange aroma, bit of brown sugar.

Taste: Mix of orange and pine, bit on the sweet side, strong caramel backbone, piney in the middle.

Mouthfeel: Slick, coats the mouth, decent lingering bitterness.

Overall: Not really a DIPA in my book but i found it tasty.
