Poured from a bomber into a tulip glass. Served cold, reviewing as it warms. Dark amber color with decent lacing and a frothy head, dissipating fairly quickly. Dark amber color, crisp, and carbonated. Smells of sweet malt, grapefruit and orange zest. Tastes of sweet biscuit malt, earthy tones and flashes of citrus fruit notes followed by a nice overall bitterness from the hops. Not getting a ton of tropical fruit character though. I’d be interested to know what hops were used in this brew. Slightly alcoholic as expected for an imperial ipa running at 8.25%. Pretty smooth and easy drinking for a medium bodied IIPA beer like this. It’s a delicious and flavorful beer, especially as it warms slightly. For $4.99, it’s a steal. I finally made it up there last month and it was an awesome establishment. Will purchase again!

Very Well done West Coast Double IPA. Stays traditional to the west coast Style in general and doesn't deviate.
Beginning with Look. Gorgeous dark orange amber color, bright highlights and clear. Poured ever so gently into the glass, I got a thin cap that dissipated. Minimal Lacing. Moving along to smell. The aroma is not pungent, sort of minimal. Very citrus and pine quality not much else. Now for Taste; the most important part. Starts off aromatic with a sweetness that builds. Upfront fresh Tangerines and orange pith with a faint hint of vanilla. Beautiful floral notes as the sweetness kicks in along with the bitterness. In the middle a caramelized malt undertone that leads you to a alcohol finish. No burn or warming sensation. As for feel, there could be room for improvement however, its fine. A good crisp Carbonation, slightly creamy on the pallet. light to medium body. Smooth and easy to drink. Overall, Very enjoyable beer. I look forward to drinking the rest.

Sticky, hoppy, sweet-ish and piney! 8%abv was well-hidden when cold, but got more pronounced as it warmed! Be warned, three of these will have you very relaxed!

August 24th, 2015 - An Unlimited Release! Get it now! Or, later. A leather brown ale, it has a soapy scent, but good and fresh. And I also smell unripened grapefruit, bitter and not at all sweet. The flavor is also quite butter, with a fresh, hop forward dimension, and blossoming a little in the middle. On the finish I get some esters, appearing as papaya and lychee and other tropical fruits, but it is a brief glimmer before the bitterness resumes.

Bought a 22oz bottle $4.79 Tamuras
Clear amber color
Medium mouthfeel
Medium carbonation
Hop citrus flavors, some bitterness
Overall a nice IPA, but nothing outstanding that would make me buy it again.

Maximus brewed by Lagunitas Brewing Company, with an ABV of 8.20% This American Imperial IPA pours out of a 12oz glass bottle into a pint beer glass. The color is a deep amber color with the a nice white head. There is also a nice amount of lacing to this brew, it sticks to the side of the glass well. The smell is rich with hop bitterness mixed with spices. You also pick up a nice amount of earthy grains and malts in the smell as well. So far this is a nice inviting brew. Now for the taste, it is Bold with hop bitterness. The earthy grains and malts claim this American Imperial IPA down. The body of Maximus is a medium to heavy, but not to heavy is not enjoyable. It is really hard to pick up on the 8.20% ABV in this brew, it is just that smooth. This brew would go nice with dinner or a cool day, due to the higher ABV. The mouth feel is Bold, Rich, Hoppy, Clean, Smooth and Refreshing. Overall I'm going to give Maximus a 4.25 out of 5. I would definitely look this brew up again giving the opportunity to. Lagunitas Brewing Company, did a super nice job with this American Imperial IPA.

355ml bottle from Morrison’s supermarket (£2.25):
A clear amber with orange tinges & a fluffy head that's foamy & white, it’s quite thick looking too it & has fairly good retention for the strength of the beer. The nose is a hoppy one with some malts & plenty of sugars plus a little alcohol in the early going but it's definitely sweet with citrus, mango &some resinous pine in there as well. The taste is a sweet & malty one, not quite as pronounced as the nose but the mango & citrus both feature, as does a pleasant apricot taste & lots of sugars with caramel following on behind. Again it seems fairly resinous & it is a medium bodied offering with lighter than expected carbonation levels but a sharp, crisp feel & a little bit of warming alcohol right at the end too: brilliant stuff.

Poured a clear amber with a significant white head that dissipated rather slowly. Has a strong fruity, hoppy aroma. The taste is bitter with hints of citrus fruit.

Poured from a single-serve bottle into a tulip

Pours lighter than amber but darker than gold with a two-finger head and good lacing. Crystal clear.

The aromas are excellent, with hops very forward in multiple ways--floral/citrus/resiny, in that order. However, lacking the solid background mango/pineapple malt typical of the style.

The flavor follows the nose. Excellent hop bitterness. Skewed bitter, however, and not as balanced as a true DIPA. A bit of alcohol bite in the background, but not a burn.

The finish is the best part of the beer. Medium bodied with a nice crisp finish.

A good brew on its own merits. It straddles the line between IPA and DIPA very well. Just a tad out of balance and a bit heavy on the booze note.

My all time favorite beer. Created an account just to review this, great fruity aroma, beautifully pale ale great foamy head with open bubbles, taste is crisp as can be and dry on the finish. Slight citrus notes with a very floral aroma. Everybody I’ve ever gave some to has fallen in love with this beer. Lagunitas hit it out of the park making this beer! Relatively cheap compared to other beers and for an 8.2% beer it goes down smooth and mean!

Beautiful pour - brilliantlyear golden light copper with steady carbonation and good head that lingers. Every IPA should look like this. Smell is hop- forward citrus, pine and resinous. Taste is crisp grapefruit supported by bready malt flavor with a touch of caramel sweetness. This is an easy-to- drink 8% IPA. Well-made, just like everything from Lagunitas.

From notes 12/11/11: Pours a nice coppery amber with a full, chunky, eggshell tan head that leaves nice lacing. Aroma is floral and oily hops, citrus and cantaloupe, balanced with malt caramel sweetness. Taste is citrus, cantaloupe, pine and floral; sweet caramel malt with a little bread. There is a hop bite in the finish that produces a lingering bitterness.

Nice, refreshing, well-balanced double IPA. Golden color with a little fluffy head and spotty lingering lacing. Smells of grapefruit and piney hops with a little dankness. Tastes similarly, along with some caramel, vanilla and malt. The malt-hops balance is outstanding. Smooth thin mouthfeel with just a touch of creaminess. Good carbonation and the higher ABV is well-hidden. Another solid beer from a great brewery!

Look: pale orange, very transparent. Head is normal to small but quite some lacing.
Smell: Hops is the first thing that comes to your mind, essentially resinous but also fruity. Malty-wheat aromas. Something creamy as well. Very interesting, even for a dull nose like mine.
Taste: Hops party with a good malty backbone. Something spicy/warming as well, perhaps vanilla. However, boozy notes are a bit too high. As well, as someone mentioned before, the hops mixture could've been a bit more complex.
Feel: Generously bodied. Carbonation is medium to low. Nice to sip on an autumn night.
Overall: complex, very interesting beer. If it only burnt a little bit less it would have been fantastic. Otherwise great.

Great full mouthfeel, lots of strong sweet malt in the flavour to go along with the hops but to me the hops don't have a lot of interesting flavours besides being there. The flavour is dominated by the sweet full malt. A bit of bourbon booze at the end of each sip gives this some characteristic of an imperial. It's a decent beer at 8.2% ABV but I'd rather have a Hop Stoopid.

A pretty good beer but a bit too boozey and not hoppy enough for good balance.

Had it from a bottle into a tulip glass. Golden yellow color, decent head and lacing. Sort of a sweet citrus smell. A bit of fruit and vanilla on the taste.

12 Oz Bottle poured into a glass
Look - light clear amber with a nice foam head and nice lacing on glass
Smell - sweet grass, tropical fruity hops, malt
Taste - Wow, it's about as smooth as can be. Heavy on the malt, but the bitterness from the hops is there. Not nearly at the level of Hop Stoopid in terms of the bitterness but that is expected. Very mellow but flavorful. Low-medium carbonation. On the sweeter side but it's got a good tropical fruit layer. Fairly easy drinking medium oily body.

Overall it tastes similar to the Lagunitas IPA just a bit more pronounced in the flavor and ABV. Great beer that i would love to have a few times a year. It isn't too sweet or too bitter, nice and smooth, can't detect much alcohol.
Give this beer an A

I wish this was a regular brew instead of a seasonal brew for Lagunitas. This would easily become one of my always in the fridge beers. A nicely balanced DIPA. Not too anything, just right if you are a fan of Imperial or DIPAs.

Copper filtered with no carbonation and topped with two fingers of white head.

Smells of pine, citrus, clean linen, taffy, and orange drink.

The taste follows the nose. Alcohol and big bitterness as well.

Medium body with moderate carbonation, it’s smooth and covers the ABV.

Got at liquor king in Redding, drinking at the pool house here for the first time, August 16th, 2018.

Nice dark golden color. Light lacing. A very good IPA for 8%. My local liquor store charged me almost 16 bucks for a six pack. Compared to the $10.99 I could pay for the amazing Hop Stoopid at Ralphs, Maximus just isn't worth the extra money. It might be slightly more flavorful. But only slightly.

Look: Standard amber IPA fare. Fair amount of head, lots of lacing.

Smell: Really its only weak point, and hardly one at that. Lots of hop and citrus aroma, with a stronger-than-palatable alcoholic nose.

Taste: An excellent example of how to do an imperial IPA right. Minimal hoppy bitterness despite a high IBU, with notes of orange peel and a strong lemony bite in the finish. Balanced well with some malt and caramel characteristics.

Feel: Far smoother than most imperial/DIPA competitors, even within Lagunitas's own brand. A surprisingly easy drinker, given the ABV, that goes down best on a hot day. Quite nice.

Overall: A delicious summer beer that tastes and drinks better than the vast majority of its similarly-distributed peers. Not world-class, but an outstanding IPA.

12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip glass.

L---Clear amber color. Fairly thick head with ok retention that left very nice lacing.

S---Hops are obvious. Tropical/citrus fruits are in abundance. Orange, grapefruit, pineapple.

T---Sweet & fruity. No real bitterness. There's some maltiness to provide balance.

F---Medium. A bit oily & resinous. Very nice.

O---Another excellent offering by a top quality brewery. I've been picking this up whenever I see it.

Pours a clear deep bronze gold, and has a nice head. The aroma carries a good deal of malt with some strong base hops. Taste also carries some malt, which definitely helps to mask some of the sharpness of the high gravity. Hops have a citrusy note, making this a well balanced DIPA that I would drink again.

L: Poured from a bottle to a snifter glass. Had an amber color and a hazy texture. There was a half inch of foamy, fairly long-lasting head. Excellent lacing.

S: A nice aroma of hops, citrus, tropical fruit, malt, and caramel.

T: Tasted of a small amount of malt (mostly in the finish), lots of hops (not too much, though), some citrus notes (orange, lemon, in particular), light caramel, a grassy quality (it disappears over time), and a hint of pine. A super solid flavor that gets better as you go along. It's quite hoppy and sweet, but well-balanced.

F: A good amount of carbonation with a lively finish. Medium-bodied.

O: This isn't necessarily a perfect DIPA, but it's likable and easy to drink. Worth a look.

3/22/18: 1 Pint 6 Oz, two pours into pint glass. Golden copper clear pour, one finger white head. Pleasant citrus hops aroma. Firm feel, nice mix of sweet citrus and solid hops. Firm mouth feel, carbonation holds. Overall excellent IPA offering!
