Lots of chocolate milk and fresh-ground coffee beans on the nose. The mouthfeel is almost velvety and carries the big flavors well: dark chocolate and black coffee bitterness, followed by some welcomed sweetness, with a nice aftertaste of slight hop bitterness and alcohol afterglow.

Sometimes it cracks me up how I can be over 3000 reviews into this and then there's beers like this that I've been having for around 20 years that I am yet to write a review for.

Anyways, pours a hefty and thick black with 1/2" tan head. I dunno what you want appearance wise other than what they are kicking down here. The standard if you will. Aroma, plenty of roast, roast more dominant than the dark fruit trademark of a Russian Imperial Stout, thankfully. This seems more like a hybrid of the stout styles.

Taste, big chewy roasted malt providing an acrid burnt coffee like feel, some dark fruit bitterness and burnt chocolate malt feels as well. Very bitter. Like damn, we're talking likst 100ibu levels of bitterness here. Carbonation is appropriate. The cost is the lowest price point you'll see for any imperial stout, and this is a good one, unlike most of the really cheap ones. A solid pick for someone who wants a non adjunct, non barrel aged RIS.

Opaque Black color with ruby highlights and a nice milk chocolate foam head that persists and makes some nice lacing all the way down.

The aroma is roasted malt, hints of coffee, chocolate and figs.

The taste is sweet caramel malt, dark chocolate, figs or dates, espresso and a slightly smoky finish with just enough hop bitterness to balance the sweetness.

Medium/full body.

All together a pretty classic imperial stout, nicely balanced, just a bit of alcohol warmth but not intrusive, smooth and easy to drink. A really good cool weather brew, although good anytime.

2017 bottling. Poured from a bomber into a Chimay chalice.

Look - I read a couple reviews that said "dark brown". I'd say it's closer to black, given the vagueness of those statements. Nice head, sticks around on the edges and looks island-y.
Smell - Not a lot compared to the taste. I'd say, the only flaw in the beer. But who am I, Michael Jackson? It's great, not overstated like so many in this style are. I think this beer adheres to the centuries of precedent. More on that later...
Taste - quite balanced for the style, drinkable for the abv/weight. 9.9% is a lot for beer when you think about it and it's not terribly noticable. But I do think that it contributes to some of perceptions; raisins, dates, brown sugar, burnt bread, caramel, slight tootsie-roll and Belgian dark chocolate bitterness. But that bitterness only balances the sweetness and nothing more. Makes one anticipate the next sip. A little bit of espresso.
Feel - Perfect. Intense but not cloying. Would drink another. Tiny bubbles scrub the tongue just enough. Right amount of lift.

Overall this is a great beer. I didn't give it all 5's because I thought that it lacked the smallest bit of intrigue. But by all means this is an absolute standard. It's readily available and definitive. It's guilt-full-y cheap at $4.99 a bomber and could be... Dare I say it?... An "every-day impy stout". Oh man, what has this existence come to if one imbibes a beer like this every day? But the ubiquity of it screams for regular consumption for the sake of pride.
I would digress but there is a bit left to say: It's not barrel aged or brewed with coffee. There's no Madagascar vanilla beans or Mexican chiles or maple syrup. But this beer does it all anyways and leaves me satisfied. It's basic in the most satisfying way and should not be missed.
Here's to the standard, friends!

This one is a mimic of the greats in this style. Lagunitas has no clue what they are doing when it comes to brewing beer. They are sell outs and everyone of their beers taste too similar to each other.

Quite a disappoint guys, don’t waste your money on this one, there is a reason it costs $5 for a 22 oz bomber.

While I don't usually buy beers this expensive, I had just gotten a huge bonus from work and decided to treat myself to something special.

Look: It's very dark, almost black, but it doesn't put me off. I like dark looking beers.
Smell: Has a sweet smell, and not like a rusty nail like lighter American style beers, but a good aroma, nutty/chocolate.
Taste: It is very strong, not for the weak willed! This is a mans' beer, and the taste IS NOT BITTER at all, very very good.
Feel: It has a light carbonated feel, but at the same time can be compared to drinking a dark cold espresso. You will not regret it!

Overall: I loved it, and it has a very high alcohol content as for what I'm used to drinking. Trying to drink one of these, and then chasing with a much cheaper beer will make you sick though, sort of like tasting filet mignon and then eating a mcdonalds cheeseburger right after. So don't do that, but DO drink this!
