Imperial StoutImperial Stout
Notes: Having downed his fourth Imperial Stout of the day, the wild eyed charlatan from Voldvrostronglaky belched and hollered for the Czarina to enter his chamber and bend herself to his will. The economy was a wreck and revolt was just around the corner. Nicky the Czar dude was off playing soldier like any pale nobleman with a hemorrhagic skin condition would. Such were the final days of the old empire. Reactionary, decadent, sputnik, stroganoff, weird, and drunk. But even as the proletariat countryside labored under inhuman conditions and the threat of being sent to a futile war in the east, they wisely took the time to slam back an Imperial Stout or two. After all, life can be a real 'suka' as they said in the old country. Big, black, bourgeois, Bolshoi, belligerent, buxom, and scary. This is our version of the end of an era in a bottle.

22oz bottle picked up at Total Wine in Lynnwood, Washington.
Served in a Samuel Smith pint glass.

Look- Opaque dark brown, almost black color. Modest khaki colored head that slowly recedes to a small ring of foam around the edges of the glass, light lacing. No carbonation streams visible.

Smell- Roasted coffee, roasted malts, brown sugar, chocolate cake, licorice, a little dark fruit, spicy/herbal notes.

Taste- Toasted malt, coffee, licorice, bittersweet chocolate and raisins, burnt sugar/maple syrup and vanilla, a little light spicy hops.

Feel- Medium bodied, a bit syrupy with a smooth texture. Slightly bitter finish, moderate/light carbonation on the tongue.

O- A nice imperial stout, not a top tier one but tasty none the less, taste improves as it warms.

Laguintas Imperial Stout, 9.9%, poured from a bomber to a glass
L: Dark brown, opaque, super thick medium brown head
S: Nose is a little weak, chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, little nuts, and vanilla.  Picked up some notes on rust and musty smell too (?)
T: Chocolate donuts, cappuccino, roasted nuts, roasted coffee, little bit of smoked chile. Bitter-sweet (literally) finish. Note of burnt sugar sweetness that persists. Taste is a lot more sugary than deep malty flavor.
F: Medium body, hides ABV well, well-balanced, OK finish
O: Overall this is OK but not crazy about it compared to many other excellent imperial stouts. This is a solid 4.

Surprised by how good this is; for a nearly 10% stout, it’s very drinkable but, most of all, I have never tried anything this good for anywhere close to this price. I agree with the other reviews- this should be a go-to for a great affordable stout available in stores that don’t have a beer focus

22oz bottle. Date code etched on bottle is '0-1 311 18D-1'.
Dark brown to black colored body, with ruby back lit highlights. Two fingers of tan head with lots of bubbles. This sticks around as a thick cap, with the lacing reaching up the glass.
Aroma is heavy with dark roasted malts, with some char, molasses, booze, and vanilla peeking out.
Taste is a good balance between the dark malts and the piney, earthy hops. There is a note close to cherry, along with the char and molasses. Also has chocolate, coffee, and slight vanilla. Slight bitterness at the end.
Full mouth feel, with a very creamy texture. Good carbonation.
Not complex, but made very well for tasting the dark side of beer. The alcohol is there but not overly boozy.

Excellent. A great balanced stout. Smells like dark cocoa, nuts and I wanna say a subtle smokiness. Has a very balanced blend of hops and toasted malts, with a perfect sweet finish. Feels very smooth and does not feel like a 9.9% ABV, rather it feels more like a 6. Excellent beer, Definitely would recommend.

Rich chocolate notes. Slight alcohol bitterness but pretty well hidden for 9.9%! Medium to full bodied. Highly recommended for the price. I paid $4.50 for the bomber. Great beer for stout lovers and newbies looking to try out the style. Not world class but very tasty and worth the price of admission at least once. My go to imperial when I don't have the cash for the heavy hitters like tenfidy,KBS, etc.
Cheers

Very dark brown with two fingers of tan head. Dense lacing as level drops.
Smell is dark cocoa coffee and a hint of smoke.
Taste is dark coffee cocoa molasses bitter hops. Not sweet by any means.
Mouthfeel is full and well carbonated. The finish is medium dry and bitter.
Overall a fine Imperial Stout. Alcohol is present but mainly in a warming sense.

A really good tasting imperial stout. Bold nutty and chocolate notes and not too sweet. With a 10% ABV you will be pleased to not find an overwhelming taste of alcohol but rather a smooth burn.

5 may seem like a high rating but my review is based off of quality per price. This is an excellent stout at only $5.99 a bottle. Flavor is excellent and easily accessible versus $20 bottles of stout.

Pours black with some light penetration. Offers a brown head that recedes to brilliant lacing showing you all your sips. Smells of coffee and a roasty maltiness beyond it's price range. The taste is smooth, roasted coffee, light hops and a little smokiness. It's not too thick, and rolling it around in your mouth it develops a creamy texture. Well done.

Pours out black. The head is dense and brown. The retention on this is ridiculous. Its not going anywhere. Lacing is great to boot. Lots of thick sticky rings around the pint glass.

Smells like plums and raisins. Getting a hint of coffee. Or course toasted malts. Smells a bit smokey as well.

Taste of dark roasted malts. Semi sweet dark fruits through the middle. Coffee is light on the taste with chocolate being more dominant. Alcohol is surprisingly toned down considering the abv but is there. Finish is mildly bitter with a lingering roasted grains flavor.

Mouthfeel is very smooth. Like drinking silk. Carbonation is soft and pleasant.

L: Pitch black with a creamy tan head. Very good retention. Lots of sticky lacing left behind.

S: Dark chocolate, cocoa, soy sauce, caramel, pumpernickel bread, vanilla, raisin, black cherry, coffee, licorice/star anise, earth.

T: Dark chocolate, chocolate syrup, milk chocolate, and a huge amount of soy sauce and beef broth upfront. Pumpernickel bread, black cherry, raisin, caramel, toffee, and vanilla follow. Finishes with some black coffee, earth, black licorice and star anise spice, and then a lingering black coffee bitterness.

F: Medium-plus, almost full-bodied. Rounded and creamy. Moderately carbonated.

O: An outstanding imperial stout. I don't know why it gets the low ratings. It's fully up to the par, borderline world-class.

I really liked this beer. Its flavor, mouthfeel and other characteristics were not so novel that made it a noteworthy experience, rather I think it's a tight wonderful example of the brew style. Every aspect of this beer seemed to be "correct".
Definitely worth your time to experience.

No noticeable date code but bought it about a year ago
L- pours a dark black with tan head
S- vanilla, chocolate, coffee
T- dark chocolate, vanilla, roasty smokiness, bitterness as well
F- full-bodied
Overall a solid Impy Stout with surprising notes of vanilla, usually noticeable in Bourbon Barrel Aged Stouts

Maybe I'm a plebeian or too proletariat to understand these complex beer reviews noting flavors of Indonesian cinnamon and floral bouquets of white lilies. Maybe my palate is just not not refined enough to be able to tastes all these incredible things people are tasting. I'm am surprised this imperial stout is not rated higher though. I have tried many, and this is my favorite. It also happens to be the cheapest in my neck of the woods. 22 Oz. bottles for $3.99. It's rich and chewy like any imperial stout. I find it to be very easy drinking too. I'll try my hand at flavors noted. Coffee and dark chocolate come to mind. The very rich flavors tend to hide the high alcohol content, as with most imperial stouts.

Dark, roasty, and the hint of hops that the west coast stout provides. The malt and coffee meld well with the hops and coffee aromas. Taste is pretty bitter, but not atypical for the range of the style. A very solid to good stout and price wise a great value

22oz bottle. Jet black with a lacing of bubbles. Not much smell, a faint hint of smoky malt. Full-bodied. Taste is very smooth, with a mix of chocolate, coffee, smoke, and a touch of bitterness at the end. A solid example of the style and good value for the price point, but it could be better.

Great smoky taste. I have this on hand year round . Purchased in 22oz. Great tasting imperial stout. My favorite so far from Lagunitas that I have tasted! I would also like to note that this is hard to find in central Illinois. The price point on a 22oz bomber is awesome . Please ask your favorite liquor to stock it. It’s a great stout to try !

Growler into pint glass. Pours an inky black with a thin tan head that dissipates rapidly. Initial impression is rich, smooth chocolate, coffee, and roasted malts. The flavors are pretty standard for an RIS; the smoothness (particuarly considering the ABV and the freshness) are not. Finish follows taste. Good but not great.

22oz bottled 10/30/17 (Chicago) poured into a teku glass at fridge temp 9.9% ABV 72 IBU. The beer pours very dark brown with chocolate tan colored head. The head recedes to a fine film, thin ring and some lacing. The aroma is mostly roast with some chocolate. Taste is more roast, chocolate and coffee up front with a big roasty bitterness to close things out. Mouthfeel is full to medium bodied, adequately carbonated and undry in the finish. It's not cloying or sweet, it just leaves a wet roasty feel on the tongue. Overall, very good. Not the best example of a straight up RIS, but a good value at $5/bomber.

I'm not a huge fan of this style and only drink one occasionally. This one smells of really strong coffee and dark chocolate. It has decent carbonation with a dark tan head. (not quite brown, but almost) The first taste that hit me was a strong licorice coffee flavor followed by a slightly sour semi-sweet chocolate flavor. It's pretty complex, you can pick out something different in almost every sip. The high abv is evident but not in a bad way. It finishes with a mellow lingering bitterness of a neutral hop profile. Like I said, I don't drink a lot of dark beers but this was enjoyable. Thumbs up.

Lots of chocolate milk and fresh-ground coffee beans on the nose. The mouthfeel is almost velvety and carries the big flavors well: dark chocolate and black coffee bitterness, followed by some welcomed sweetness, with a nice aftertaste of slight hop bitterness and alcohol afterglow.

Sometimes it cracks me up how I can be over 3000 reviews into this and then there's beers like this that I've been having for around 20 years that I am yet to write a review for.

Anyways, pours a hefty and thick black with 1/2" tan head. I dunno what you want appearance wise other than what they are kicking down here. The standard if you will. Aroma, plenty of roast, roast more dominant than the dark fruit trademark of a Russian Imperial Stout, thankfully. This seems more like a hybrid of the stout styles.

Taste, big chewy roasted malt providing an acrid burnt coffee like feel, some dark fruit bitterness and burnt chocolate malt feels as well. Very bitter. Like damn, we're talking likst 100ibu levels of bitterness here. Carbonation is appropriate. The cost is the lowest price point you'll see for any imperial stout, and this is a good one, unlike most of the really cheap ones. A solid pick for someone who wants a non adjunct, non barrel aged RIS.

Opaque Black color with ruby highlights and a nice milk chocolate foam head that persists and makes some nice lacing all the way down.

The aroma is roasted malt, hints of coffee, chocolate and figs.

The taste is sweet caramel malt, dark chocolate, figs or dates, espresso and a slightly smoky finish with just enough hop bitterness to balance the sweetness.

Medium/full body.

All together a pretty classic imperial stout, nicely balanced, just a bit of alcohol warmth but not intrusive, smooth and easy to drink. A really good cool weather brew, although good anytime.
