While I don't usually buy beers this expensive, I had just gotten a huge bonus from work and decided to treat myself to something special.

Look: It's very dark, almost black, but it doesn't put me off. I like dark looking beers.
Smell: Has a sweet smell, and not like a rusty nail like lighter American style beers, but a good aroma, nutty/chocolate.
Taste: It is very strong, not for the weak willed! This is a mans' beer, and the taste IS NOT BITTER at all, very very good.
Feel: It has a light carbonated feel, but at the same time can be compared to drinking a dark cold espresso. You will not regret it!

Overall: I loved it, and it has a very high alcohol content as for what I'm used to drinking. Trying to drink one of these, and then chasing with a much cheaper beer will make you sick though, sort of like tasting filet mignon and then eating a mcdonalds cheeseburger right after. So don't do that, but DO drink this!

Poured to a BrewDog snifter.

A: The body is pitch black presenting a yellowish to beige head, showing some retention and some lacing as well.
S: The aroma is very strong on malts, having then a kind of empty feeling because the chocolaty and coffee-ish tones are really undermined here. There's also some bitterness in the aroma that appears that it's coming from the hops which is a bit unexpected.
T: The taste begins with a slight coffee sweetness resembling an instant coffee mixed with a vanilla and milk. Not sure if this has any lactose in it. The flavour then grows upwards to a more chocolate hint, being a lot more true on the flavour than the coffee profile. The aftertaste is milky chocolate.
M: The body is medium. Carbonation is high and very velvety. The bitterness is weak as it should.
O: Even though the flavours present are what was expected, the strength is not. They appear to be very weak. There's also some mainstream component to the fact that the chocolate is more milky than dark, providing a more "anyone can drink this" feeling to the beer.

First impression would be: monotonic and bland.

Full disclosure, I haven't tried many russian imperial stouts. So I'm not aware what is authentic, or desirable.

Just know I didn't think this beer was interesting enough for the price. Looks amazing, but the taste is very disappointing. Overly hopped in my opinion. Poor balance overall.

The appearance was a nice pure dark brown close to black color with a softly dissipating one finger white to off white foamy head. There’s a nice gently sliding lacing. The smell has a nice luscious enticing chocolate to coffee to light black licorice The taste had a fairly decent enriching bitter coffee balancing with the chocolate that has both dark and milk elements to it. The licorice does come back and lets a nice decent earthy dark fruits to come in just a tad. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body trying to show a slight heavier feel but really leaning to the medium side. The carbonation seemed right on par for the style and for me as it was mainly nice and smooth and coated my tongue nicely. Overall, this was a really nice RIS well worthy of having again.

Pours black with rich tan head and very sticky lacing. Smells good, lots of sugary molasses, coffee, chocolate, oak. The taste is very good, minor bite/alcohol with solid coffee notes, dark chocolate, plum/raisin, molasses and some oak in there. This is a medium to light heavy beer, some bite to it but not bad for the style, overall a nice Stout.
