for my money this is one of the best beers lagunitas ever made, under the short lived scarecity brand family, of which i think only four beers ever came to be, then it became onehitter, but this thing was tops. high rye malt in the mash, dry baking type cocoa character, not sweet at all for what it is, roasty and intricately complex, smooth as can be, and hiding its alcohol strength incredible well, i really was floored by this, well outside of the expected wheelhouse for these guys, but super dialed in. deep brown in color, not insanely viscous, actually with a real luxurious half inch of pale brown head on it, some chestnut reddish edges in the light. the aroma here is baking chocolate, bitter cocoa nibs, good espresso just brewed, peppery rye, ash and char and light smoke, a hint of raisin fruitiness too, and old oak, although i do not believe this saw wood exposure. pure velvet on the palate with tiny little bubbles keeping it feeling lively. nice bitterness through the whole thing, coffee character riding, and the rye malt is awesome, adding a deeply earthy layer to this, easily identifiable in here and it comes out more and more as it sits. soothing and fuller feeling but not heavy, high end organic chocolate on the back end, somewhat sift finishing for what it is, only a touch warm from its strength, really subtle there. nice mix of flavors in a highly refined beer that really stands out as unique. a lovely recipe and killer execution, they should bring this one back...

Early 2015 vintage; drank 2/13/15 on draft @ Fischman's.
Brown/black appearance.
Tan head; decent lace.
Candle wax, booze heat & mild pickle notes in the nose.
Medium thick mouthfeel.
Candle wax & mild black coffee flavors up front; mild pickle finish.
Drinkable but not exactly enticing.

Light tan head. Dark brown/black color.
Lots of roasted malts and chocolate/cocoa. Rye barrel spice with oak. Molasses. Caramel and dark dried fruits.
Medium bodied that ends a bit burnt.
Decent, but not something I am running home to.
