This beer, to me, is not a wheatwine. It's a hoppy Lagunitas beer, an amalgamation of Brown Shugga, Undercover Shutdown, and Old Gnarlywine. I'm not saying this is a bad beer, but it's not what Lagunitas claims.

Taste is wheat, grapefruit, and pine. This is definitely a Lagunitas brew as it is the hoppiest wheatwine that I have had. This almost drinks like an American Barleywine or a double IPA. An ok brew, but not what I am reaching for if I want a wheatwine.

Not familiar with wheatwines but from what I've had this Scare City is the best thus far. Has a nice citrus Sunkist/ Hi-C finish I enjoyed. Super easy drinking as well . . . I could drink this all day long if the 9.7 % abv didn't put me to sleep first.

From tasting notes dated July 1st, 2015
Had on tap @ Capitol Beer and Taproom in Sacramento, CA

Appearance - Served up in a 12oz snifter, relatively clear and golden orange in color with a white, broken layer of surface suds.

Smell - Dank and citrus aroma with mild wheaty undertones. Light hints of vineous fruit.

Taste - Follows what the nose alluded to, with predominant citrus hop character that rides on orange and grapefruit flavor. A moderate amount of pine dankness and grainy wheat sit beneath. The finish is boozy, and hints at light, fruity esters.

Mouthfeel - Full bodied with low to moderate carbonation. Sticky, syrupy texture, but goes down surprisingly easy despite that.

Overall - Pretty good, but nothing out of the realm of comfortablity that Lagunitas seems inherent to adhere to when it comes to their hopped up special releases. As per that pattern, the citrus hop character shown here nearly overwhelms every other aspect of this brew.
