Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.90%

Availability: Winter

Notes / Commercial Description:
We took some fresh Sanguinello Blood oranges, juiced 'em, concentrated that juice (without heat) and threw it into a wheatier version of our New Dogtown Pale Ale. The end result? A refreshingly hopped pale-ish ale with a huge citrus burst!

My only downside is that I get a peppercorn flavor. Not sure if from spicy hop or just been drinking too many IPAs today. Definitely a wonderful use of a fruit with a "hoppier" beer. Also have sediment floating in glass which is unusual for a Lagunitas hoppy beer, but is a welcome sight as i prefer a little sediment/haze in my Ales.

I can't recall having a fruity hoppy beer that I enjoyed as much as this one, with the exception of maybe Grapefruit Sculpin (although this is almost as good). The smell is incredible--there's a huge orange flavor, and the taste has both a burst of orange/grapefruit and hops. This is a big, big beer, but it goes down incredible easy. It is quite acidic, but it's incredibly refreshing.

Appearance - Pours crystal clear and light golden orange in color. Thin, white head that results in a thin, broken layer of suds across the top. Lots of sediment floating around the glass. Spotty lacing with decent stick.

Smell - Fresh, fragrant orange aroma. Light pine notes. Faint hints of caramel.

Taste - Bright, almost sour citrus flavor at the forefront. Big pine notes mid-taste and light spice, then juicy orange hits in the finish. Malts are restrained, delivering a generic bready sweetness. Aftertaste is orange character that is more sweet than bitter; juicy with a touch of pith.

Mouthfeel - Medium in body with lively carbonation. Slick, easy drinker before a mostly dry finish.

Overall - Pretty damn good. A bit too much pine for my liking, especially considering the 'pale' moniker, but the citrus juiciness helps me to forget, or at least to forgive that. If they never come back to brewing this again, it would be a damn shame.

The beer comes in a crystal clear light orange color.

The aroma hits of a theme of a big sticky resinous dank quality, a bit of burnt rubber. There's also some sugary orange candy and bready malt.

The flavor follows with that sticky resinous dank quality throughout, some sugar coated orange gum drop flavor, a medium bready malt. The finish is crisp and clean with some lingering bitterness and dank. The beer drinks more like an IPA, instead of the "Pale Ale" that the label suggests or the 7.9% DIPA ABV.
