Notes: A Mosaic-hopped Ale Brewed With Mango Juice

The flesh is weak, but the spirit is willing. So, what's at the heart of it? Is it the patient and diligent servant or the committed messenger, through their many routes and vessels? The salient soldier, slinging suds on the front lines daily, or the very brewers themselves? The answer is... we can't tell you here. From seed to sprout to fruit, and back to seed, we're all tangled on the same vine. And while fruit is momentary, the roots hold on for another season. It's all just a matter of perspective...

22oz bottle. Clear golden body with a frothy off-white head; good retention; thick lacing. Huuuge juicy mango juice aroma, but it smells very sweet. Yep, sweet flavors in general with notes of mango juice, orangey citrus, pine, light caramel, honey, and grain. Fuller body, nice carbonation, mostly sweet but ends with a piney bite. I like the mango juice addition, but it adds to much sweetness in my opinion; I'm not sure of less mango or more bittering hops would solve that problem. Glad to try it, but after 22oz, I'm kind of over it.

i'm generally not that big on fruited IPAs, but Lagunitas hit the bull's-eye on this one. the nose is amazing, the fruit flavor is there without overpowering the hops (i.e. it's still an IPA, not fruit juice with hops). very, very drankable. i'm off to my grocery store to buy up the rest of their stock, at $5/bomber it would be silly not to.

Look: bright yellow with a good head.
Smell: like a ripe mango, with citrusy and piney nuances.
Taste: A lot of mango taste upfront, then reinforced by hoppiness.

Excellent beer!

Poured fresh on draft at Loosa Brews, Tuscaloosa, AL.

Pours straw yellow, translucent and with a frothy head of white foam that leaves some pretty even lace around the whole glass as it settles.

Overripe mango and dank, floral, citrusy hops on the nose. The mango juice comes out strong, but the lighy bitter citrus and underlying hop presence really gives this a balanced nose that doesn’t overwhelm with tropical fruit.

Damn, this is tasty. Drinks like a solid NE-style IPA, but with a nice subtle hop bite that leaves a lingering piney, grapefruity finish. Well balanced,

The feel on this beer is crisp, slightly sticky, and with a refreshing light finish. Even has a good subtle warmth on it as it goes down.

Bottle to wine glass.

Look: clear yellow. Medium white head.
Aroma/ Taste: Lots of mango, cracker, grape.

Feel: Creamy; medium body.

This is better than the similar Breckinridge brew.

So, I dig Lagunitas, even though I feel they have about ten brews that taste the same...super piney west coast IPA style beers that are very, very good...just...similar.

But enter the Mozango...dang.

I've been all about "juicy" IPA''s this summer, and Chicago is producing some fantastic ones...Pipeworks' "Ninja v Unicorn," Illuminated's "junior astronaut juice," and the wonderful "Spoonful" from Horse Theif Hollow. But the Mozango might be better than all of 'em.

It pours an inauspicious clear light amber with a small fizzy head, but the smell holds much promise...mango, mosaic, good and funky and tropical.

One taste proves this is no usual pine cone Lagunitas IPA... it's slightly tart, slightly sweet, very mangoey, hoppy and JUICY. Outstanding flavor. Just wish I discovered this a lot earlier in the summer.

L: Amber orange in color. Perfectly transparent. I achieved about 3 fingers of a dense frothy cap that retained very well. Heaps of lacing left on the glass as I chug it down. Objectively, this is an amazing looking beer. The color, the head, the lacing. Everything.
S: So. Much. Mango. Seriously, the mango is such a dominant smell. Earthy/resiny pine also present on the nose with notes of lemon.
T: No surprise, mango is in an abundance. A fair amount of grapefruit and lemon notes in the flavor as well. Finish is slightly bitter with lingering resiny pine, then a rush of mango sweetness. Really nice.
F: Light bodied. Fairly high carbonation. Smooth and crisp at the finish.
O: Honestly, I think its great. I love the fusion of mango juice. It works well with this beer, and works in concert with the mosaic hops. At its core, its a Lagunitas beer, and I like that I can recognize that. I would drink again, and am very grateful to have tried. Not that I factor price into a grading scale, but it is nice to pay $4.50 for a 22oz bottle. Cheers!

I’m not understanding why this beer rates as high as it does with quaffers on beer advocate.
Tastes more like a jolly rancher than a beer. Not terrible; a bit of IPA character makes it through, but the over-the-top mango just seems to get in the way throughout the whole experience.
There are many better MangoPAs out there IMO. Ones that exercise at least a modicum of restraint in the fruit application allowing a beer to be a beer.

Pours crystal clear honey with a big head that left tons of lacing. Smells very good, tastes terrific. The mango in the aroma and taste is strong, bright, and fresh. Best mango-centric beer I've ever had. Very nice, easy-drinking West Coast IPA.

A decent beer overall. Not much aroma from initial smell. Lots of fruity flavor and very subtle. Reminds me of a step up from a mango Smirnoff ice. Decent but not for everybody.

Lagunitas Brewing Company "Mozango"
1 PINT 6 FLUID Oz brown glass bottle, coded "234 8 3 3123 000"
$5.49 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: Wow, I can see my fingerprints through the glass! This might be the clearest Lagunitas beer I've ever had. The body is a yellow gold with some orange patches beneath a creamy head of bright white. The aroma is full on mango. There's a little malt there, and something that I quite make out but I assume is hops. I guess it's close to piney, oh, and maybe a little berry-ish, so it must be the Mosaic hops. It's bright and fresh and welcoming. Is this a summer beer? Because it probably should be. On to the flavor... mango as expected, and again, there's some additional hoppiness to it but it's not much. The malt is sweetish and basic, not even bready really, but more like sweet dough. Light. The fruit is the star of the show. A firm bitterness balances it properly, it's not "sweet", and it finishes dry and fruity, and slightly herbal. In the mouth it's medium bodied and gently crisp-then-smooth. It's an interesting beer but at the same time it's a bit of a one-trick-pony. As I've said about many other beers, however, at least it's a pretty good trick! Looking back, the head retention was pretty good and it left some very nice lacing behind. I enjoyed it and I'd be willing to drink more but I think a nice summer day would be a better opportunity for that than the chilly, rainy day that I'm looking at right now.

~ post script: I see that this is a summer beer. Without clear freshness dating I'd never know that though.

Brewed with Mosaic and Simcoe hops fresh mango juice. $4.99/22oz bottle.
ABV 7.7
O.G. 17

Pours out to a clear deep golden, forming a frothy and soapy white head with beautiful retention and gorgeous lacing. Carbonation is moderate, about 2. carbs or so. The nose is...you guessed it, lots of mango...ripe, with hints of cat pee and marijuana. The mouthfeel is crisp, refreshing, medium bodied, finishing lightly and pleasantly sweet. The taste is a recap of the aromas...lots of mango, some cat pee and MJ. This is balanced nicely by a clean pale malt body. There is some subtle metallic note towards the end, but doesn't detract at all. Bitterness is moderate, yet still drinkable and enjoyable, but becomes harsh with warmth. Lightly acidic, although having an initial sweetness in the finish, leaves the tongue dry.

A nice DIPA worth trying. Recommended.

Enjoyed a 20 oz serving with lunch on 10-20-18 at Mellow Mushroom for $7.50.

Beer was served light orange with a very nice white head with the initial serving.

Nose was mango city, very nice.

Taste was mango forward, almost a tad too much. Malt backbone is sturdy. Finish was a light touch of prickliness.

Mouthfeel was medium bodied and refreshing.

Overall a solid IPA!

Clear orange colored ale with a small white colored head. This beer is noticeably orange.

Smells Strongly of mango and pine. Strong tropical fruit scent with a strong passion fruit scent also. Scent of cracked black pepper. Smells mildly sweet with a scent of persimmon too.

Starts out sweet fruity and savory. Decidedly sweet, must be a lot of mango juice in it. Pine and mango tastes. Some grapefruit. Mostly though, this is sweet.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall, too sweet for me.

Lagunitas Brewing Company are masters of creating fuller flavored, fuller bodied IPA without committing to imperial status. Their Fusion series gives them complete permission to create excitement, experiments and boldness. The XXXI uses some of the dankest hops on the planet along with reckless amounts of mango for such a session.

At the crossroads of golden, light amber and orange, Mozango's firm haze and frothy cap swoons the senses with a bold mango and citronella perfume along with a background of botanical herbs and fresh grassiness. Richly malted, the early palate is sweet with fruit juices, poundcake and a mild medley of honey and caramel.

As the flavors unfold, the malt influence begins to break apart and the hops take firm control of the middle palate. Passionfruit, papaya, apricot, under ripened oranges, pink grapefruit and of course... mango play out on the tastebuds, mostly of the under ripened variety, but the mango character is branch ripe, succulent and truly exotic. A grassy and green bitterness spices up the late palate for balance and dryness, bringing a character of chive, grassiness, green tea, sassafras and lemon verbena.

Medium bodied, the unique ale seems plump and juicy early on the tongue but trails to a malty dry and smoothly bitter finish for a lighter profile to close. Mangos make a strong showing in aftertaste with a burst of tropical fruit, pepper and fresh pine in a medium long afterglow.

Pours an efferevescent honey color with a pinky of beige head. above average head retention & lacing

S: Mangos, then a little citrus & breadyness

T: Follows the nose, plenty of dryness as well up front . Some grapefruit bitterness, shows up to mix with the mango sweetness as this warms, a little touch of lime as well. Finishes with grapefruit, dryness, a little pine & plenty of mango

MF: Meduim body, fairly firm carbonation, good balance, thins out a touch when warm

This started like a house on fire, just didn't have the body or depth flavor to meet my high expectations. Still worthy of a go

22oz bottle. Poured out a clear, golden orange color with a small, off-white head of foam. It smelled of mango, citrus, grapefruit and caramel. Lots of mango flavor with grapefruit, orange and sweet caramel. Nice bitter bite.

Looks rather nice, bright orange, decent head. Aroma is weird, couldn't place the artificial sweetness at first then I realized: robitussin. Gross. Flavor was sticky, artificial, sugary cough syrup. What are they smoking at Lagunitas these days? This was awful. I almost poured the entirety of this bottle down the drain sans the two or three sips I had. Gross.

Pours out a clear pale gold color. The head is off-white and somewhat foamy. Retention is ok and leaves rings of lacing.

Very aromatic. Lots of sweet tropical fruit in the nose. Mango is prominent. I love it when its as advertised. Also smells a bit earthy. Its pretty dank.

Tons of sweet mango. Its very juicy. Other fruits you get are sweet pineapple, peaches, and orange. Its bitter but definitely not as in your face as most double IPAs. Oh and it still has that dank quality.

Mouthfeel is smooth, soft and with light to medium carbonation. Feels good to me.

Poured a light yellow-gold body with decent head and lace sheath. Mango aroma is mild with more of a light and airy hopped up aroma. Mild beer, mild mango sweetness along with other fruits so its light and pleasant, the hop bit is minimal but adds a much needed touch of balance and crispness on finish; really enjoyable and not cloying but attuned to both the sweet aspects and hops.

L: Had this on-tap at Capital Ale House - Innsbrook, poured into a pint glass. Had a golden yellow color and a mostly clear consistency. There was an inch of bright white, foamy, long-lasting head. Average lacing.

S: A very nice aroma of hops, tropical and citrus fruits, malt, and caramel.

T: Tasted of a small amount of malt (mostly in the finish), lots of tropical fruit (mango, in particular), light caramel, a decent shot of hops (not overdone), and some citrus (lemon). A sweet and vibrant flavor. This definitely a fruit-centric IPA, with the mango making quite an impression. It's not a juice bomb, but it's the star.

F: A fair amount of carbonation with a slick finish. Light- to medium-bodied.

O: A solidly likable IPA. Drinkable.

There's a bottling code on the neck but I'm not gonna waste my time trying to decode it. Maybe it was bottled on 08/29/18?

Appearance - Pours crystal clear and gold in color. Off-white, near two-finger width head that hangs for a bit before receding to a thin, broken layer of suds with a fair ring around the edge of the glass. Good amount of lacing with thick webbing found decorating much of the glass.

Smell - Straight up mango juice with a hint of pineapple.

Taste - Follows the nose. Prominent mango juice. Hint of pineapple. Earthen bitterness riding beneath. Not much else.

Mouthfeel - Light-to-medium in body with low, tingly carbonation. Not much to the body as it thins out quickly.

Overall - Odd brew. Lots of natural mango juice, but I'm not huge on mango. Then there's some earthy bitterness that makes it taste like you're drinking dirty mango juice. Meh.

22oz bottle served in a nonic pint. Neck of the bottle says 261 18 (I think), which I guess would be 17 September. My wife brought it back from California.

Pours clear brassy amber with a medium head and a loot of carbonation. Smell is dark and mango juicy.

Taste is similar. Ripe mangos. Pine bitterness. A little booze.

Mouthfeel is dry and nice. Overall, good beer.

Handsome golden yellow brew with plenty of white foam. Fruity aroma and the sweetness give you a wet smack at first sip. But why is this mineral, blueberry stems, even chokecherry bitterness following me home? The best feature is that candy-sweet mango taste. Sharp and crisp and highly carbonated mouthfeel.

After the sweet kiss this is astoundingly bitter. I think everything at Lagunitas has gone downhill into this bitter swamp. The Brown Shugga I used to look forward to is also too sweet and bitter and astringent to drink. This stuff, even ice cold out of the chilly little refrigerator is barely drinkable. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at the Indian gas station in Oregon.
