For That Extra Krunk

Coffee is my shepherd; I shall not doze. It maketh me to wake in green pastures. It leadeth me beyond the sleeping masses. It restoreth my brain, It leadeth me in the paths of consciousness for it's name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of sleep, I will fear no artificial sweetener for thou art with me; Thy cream and thy sugar they comfort me. Thou preparest a carafe before me in the presence of my zzz's, Thou anointest my day with sunlight; My cup runneth over. Surely richness and flavor shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of Cappuccino forever... Let us sip... or whatever...

Black in color with minimal light penetration. There’s a half inch of creamy brown on top. The aroma is of cappuccino and dark chocolate. I’m tasting cappuccino and dark chocolate. The mouth is oily, viscous, and dry.

Pours a solid black body with a fluffy white head. Smell is coffee, a little chocolate and malt. Taste is coffee, milk chocolate, malt, touch of hop bitterness, and a little sugar. Medium body, pretty close to a cup of cappuccino actually. Overall, for the price this is pretty darned good. Not my favorite, but price wise you could consume this more regularly so, a winner.

One of the beers I make it a point to pick up every year. Looks like I've rated this anywhere between 3.5-4.75, but averaging 4.25. A great value at around five bucks a bomber.

Definitely not my favorite from Lagunitas. Pours brown; mocha head. Aroma is raisins; I can pick up Cappuccino notes after somewhat intense sniffing. Taste is dark chocolate and rasiniy, but no real cappuccino. Feel is medium carbonation with some warming quality. Overall, it's decent. Wouldn't get it again though.

Pours black with a quarter inch light brown head that was fairly well retained and left very little lacing. Smells and tastes of cold brew coffee, milk chocolate, sweet malts and lactose. Light to medium bodied for the style, lightly carbonated, mouth feel is on the thin side for a stout, moderate bitterness.

7/7/18: $4.49 3/4/18 Binny's purchase. 1 pint 6 oz 9.3% ABV bottle, multiple pours into 12 oz snifter. Pitch black pour, off tan puffy head, light tan lacing. Malt, slight roast coffee aroma. Strong cappuccino taste, slight malt. Balanced, not sweet or harsh. Medium body, slightly creamy texture, carbonation holds well. ABV sneaks up on you. Overall very good offering.

This is really thin for a stout. In fact, it actually smells watery. I've had Porter's thicker than this. Not the worst thing I have had, but definitely is mislabeled.

Pours dark black. Holding up to normal light nothing, dining room chandelier faint ruby at the bulbs. Nice thick head of tiny bubbles, however doesn't stay long. It's the black hole of beer (in a good way)
Smell - Roasty malt, biscuit. No coffee?
Taste - THEREs the cappuccino. This is really tasty! Really like a cappuccino mixed with a stout. Balanced good flavor all around. Coffee, but not too bitter.
Mouthfeel - Surprisingly the aftertaste doesn't weigh heavily on your soul. I mean its there but not going to kill your taste buds.
Overall - WILL seek this out again. Not one to have multiples of in one night, but when wanting a good stout to relax with...this is it.

22oz bottled 2/1/18 in California poured into a snifter at fridge temp 9.3% ABV 29.50 IBU. The beer pours nearly black with medium brown highlights if held to light. The head is light brown and starts around a finger deep before receding to a film coat and thin ring around the glass. The aroma is full of cold brew coffee, but that's it. The taste is lighter on the coffee with strong roasted malt presence. There's a hint of sweetness that never competes with the roasty bitterness, but helps balance it. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, adequately carbonated and dry in the finish. There is a prickly feel that would normally indicate high carbonation, but I believe it comes from the roasted malt. Bitterness feels bigger that the advertised 29.5 IBU. Overall, good. A bit short on taste and feel to be top shelf.

So good. Lagunitas kills those dark brews every time. I already drank half the growler. Pouring the second half into the goblet now...

L: Same exact color as the Scotch ale I just reviewed. Looks black, but a faint reddish light penetrates the edges of the glass. when held to light, one can tell the actual color of the body is more of a dark amber brown. Head is minimal but retention is excellent.

S: Wow. So rich and appetizing. Cold brew coffee stands out, then milk chocolate and caramel sneak in along with some salty black olives. Acidic roast coffee finish, but no notable hops. First time I've been unable to detect any hop character in a Lagunitas brew. (Yes, I haven't had this one before.)

T: Yummy. Definitely better when warmer. Milk chocolate holds steady for a second, then coffee knocks it down, bringing by a splash of orange and vanilla, followed by cream and finally a strong bitter roast flavor. If you don't like hops, but you like beer, this is probably the only Lagunitas brew you will like. Ever. But if you like Imperial Stouts, I guarantee you'll love it.

F: Creamy, smooth, and rich, as stouts should be. Too heavy to be any other style. But I love it.

O: In my opinion, this is better than Founders Breakfast Stout. This is better than Old Rasputin. This is better than any unaged coffee stout I have ever had, except Ten Fidy and SOB. Why does this one have this shitty sub-four rating? Has the recipe been changed without notice? No clue. But this 2017 batch is off the hook.

Pour from a 22oz bomber into a snifter, Head is light tan in center but khaki on the edges, slightly penetrable black body with light only passing by on the edges, light splotchy lacing

Aroma is defiantly espresso roast, some reds in the back like cranberry and pomegranate, kinda weird for a cappuccino lol, some light chocolate notes aswell, some alchohol noticeable

Taste is bitter dark coffee, slightly charred flavor, somewhat creamy, maybe chocolate raisins, very little alchohol bitterness

Mouthfeel is thicker, nice low carbonation, but kinda milky like lactose, burn from higher abv is really well hidden

Overall for only $5-$6 at my local gas station I’m again impressed by lagunitas, it’s not the most complex thing you’ll find from them but in that price bracket it’s well worth the try.

L: very dark brown liquid; messy sponge of khaki-colored foam... head don't hold, slims out to thin collar, though a long, unbroken band of splotchy lace does stick at the top

S: yeah, some ground coffee is at the surface, but a lot of damn piney hops are poking out a little ahead of them... potent, underlying presence of roasted barley and chocolate malt... the malts overall, combined with the coffee, edge decidedly toward the grainy and roasty, eschewing sweetness... the alcohol provides a subtle highlight

T: espresso, pine needle powder, dark cocoa; mild toffee-like sweetness in the aftertaste, along with a herbal, bitter mouthful of dried grass... the coffee isn't overdone, everything in nice balance... densely malty, but without much unique character to the grain

F: fleece-soft with an elegant, late snap and ping on the back end... the alcohol and roast/hop oils leave a mellow+ spicy heat

O: beefy-malty, softly-pungently hopped stout with the added nuance of a well-gauged dose of coffee... very drinkable, relatively solid, good for the price point

Tasting this beer was a pleasant surprise. The rich notes of coffee did not overpower the stout's natural profile, and the finish was relatively smooth. Not bad for a buy from Trader Joe's. I would definitely drink it again.

Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout. 22 oz bottle. This beer is pretty much what it say's it is. The color is dark cola, not totally pitch black. Nice thin foam head that lasts for a few minutes. Smell is coffee! A little bit of that roasted stout smell but mostly coffee. Maybe just a bit of chocolate. Taste is roasted coffee, a little bitter. Very fresh! Smooth, balanced, not overwhelming. Mouth feel is nice. It starts out almost a little creamy, but as it warms it thins out and you get more of the carbonation. Overall if you like coffee and want a coffee stout that is not heavy or too sweet and fudgy, then you will like this. Easy to drink and a great price point! Once again, the label say's it all. You'r getting a cappuccino stout, nothing else!

Opaque black body with small white head. Great lacing.

Alcohol and pine hops hit one straight away; followed by coffee and sweet malts. As it warms the hops dominate more and more. Very smooth.

Good.

On draught at Old Chicago, June 14th, 2015.

Pours black, small off white head of foam, good lacing for as strong as this is.

Smells of coffee, duh, roasted malt, dark chocolate, loads of bitterness.

Same for the taste, would make a good breakfast beer if I had bottles of it.

Medium to medium high carbonation, good mouthfeel.

We had three 22 oz bombers bottled during the very beginning of 2015, 2016 & 2017. (The 2018 had not come out just yet)

The three-year-old was much settled down in it's liveliness and had very little coffee aroma/flavor left; yet there were subtle notes of molasses and brown sugar in the flavor.
The two-year-old had more life to it, but was not quite as complex as the three year-old; this one edged out the others as my favorite, because there was some complexity, some liveliness, and a nice mouthfeel to it.
The one-year-old has the most life, yet not any complexity probably due to the strong coffee/roasted/hoppy character overshadowing the other flavors.

I'm glad I cellared these beers, but I don't plan to do it again as there was not enough complexity to justify the time I held onto them.

Thanks to stardusthotel83 for this 22 oz. of extra, the last beer from our swap.

The pour is black & the head hangs around like something mounted for quite a while. Nose brings gentle coffee, lactose, touch of acrid air.

Cappuccino Stout - it is. Super balanced, which isn’t a compliment around here. I always thought cappuccino was supposed to be strong, & while this has some roast & bitter, burnt acridity, it prances closer to ‘thin’ than ‘strong’. Bit of raisin creamer, & I believe someone must have said the word ‘chocolate’ while the beer was being brewed. Half the bomber is plenty.

The very definition of a mediocre beer.

It pours a dark brown close to black yielding the same color body. A one inch foamy off-white/tan head appears and lasts for a good minute before slowing dieing into the body of my nonic. Some nice spotty appears and gently slides to the bulb of the nonic pint. The smell has the cappuccino coffee up front with some roasty malts in the background covered by some light chocolate notes, wow, really impressive. The taste is bittersweet between the cappuccino coffee and the chocolate and malts, awesome balance between the two. The palate is about a medium to heavy perhaps due to the fairly high ABV. Its not exactly a very drinkable beer, but no worries, it just fits its style very well. It still coats the tongue and mouth very smoothly. Overall, this is an excellent beer.

Look: motor oil black with a thick dark beige head. The lacing is beautifully tight and the retention is infinite. It has the consistency of whole milk.
Smell: Earthy oak notes with a dark coffee aroma combined with the sweet smell of maple syrup.
Taste: Notes of chocolate, caramel, bourbon with a malt character that is wintery, nutty, and woody. There are hints of sweetness and the aftertaste is

Look - basically pitch black with a one-finger head that recedes to a ring of creamy bubbles and has long legs and pretty lacing.
Smell - rich coffee grounds, roasted malts, dark chocolate, and there are some notes of black licorice and even charred wood.
Taste - rich earthy coffee and roasted malts are strongest, but there's a blend of dark chocolate and licorice lingering too.
Feel - high carbonation and medium chewy body.

Dark brown color with tan head. Aroma has sweetened milk coffee with some dark chocolate on top. Taste follows with the sweet coffee at first but gets more bitter and roasty towards the finish lingering with coffee flavor on the aftertaste. Medium to full bodied with a good amount of carbonation. Overall it's a really nice coffee stout with balanced flavors.
