Style: American Wild Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
A Unique Dry-Hopped Sweet Tart Sour Mash Ale. We soured the wort on the Hot Side with Lactobacillus for a few days and then brewed up this smooth and hoppy sour. It tastes like a big bowl of fruity candy or some chewable flavored vitamins, but what's the difference? It's sweet, tart, and sassy, just like the tasty cherry pie that your favorite aunt makes. For all the Aunt Sally's out there, You know who you are...

From the nose one would think pale ale...but you have no clue of the sour assault forthcoming. Nice! Different!

Nice looking beer - dark straw appearance with a one finger white head that hangs around. Laces well too. Smells fantastic with that signature Lagunitas tropical hop profile (pineapple, grapefruit, etc.) along with a good hit of grassy dankness. Sweet and sour is an apt taste descriptor - initial flavor is Pixy Stick followed up with lemony tartness. Very unique tasting beer. Mouthfeel is on the lighter side with adequate carbonation. This is the 6th beer from my six-pack - I have enjoyed them all but am not rushing out to buy more. Maybe this will shine once the weather heats up.

Love/hate relationship here. Awesome because it tastes like sweettarts beer, horrible for the same reason. Tart...check. Sweet...check. Too much of both...for this dude, yes. Interesting brew, but will not probably buy again in a sixer.

Bottled 3/10/16 according to code on bottle. 5.7% according to this batch's label.
Reviewed 3/29/16

Pours a light orange with a thin head that dissipates quickly leaving a nice film and lacing

Smell out of the bottle is gorgeous, typical Lagunitas hop bomb. Apricots, grapefruit, bitter grass

Taste catches you off guard if judging by the smell alone, expecting a hoppy Pale Ale taste; instead you get that but sour. A little off putting if I'm being honest. Will need to sit with this one a bit. Reading other reviews below and Vinegar sums it up nicely.

Thin mouthfeel, not heavy but decent carbonation. Dry.

Overall I think the dry hop and sour mash don't quite jive together. Interesting experiment, no need to try again. I much prefer the Little Sumpin' Wild for a better example of the IPA hybrid.

12 oz. bottle:

Pours clear golden. A fluffy white head leaves lacing.

The smell is of citrus, some sour yeast/dough.

The taste of sweet candy and sour mash turning to bitter - grapefruit, a bit of aspirin - in the finish.

"Mixed feelings" on this one. It is "different". A hoppy/malty balanced APA with sour mash. It goes in different directions. It's nice, but doesn't all come together that great in the flavor, but works well enough. An "interesting" brew.

12 oz. bottle, no bottled on date, but this was just released earlier in the week so I know it is fresh as can be. Acquired a single bottle of this stuff from the local beer store. Sour Mash ale according to the label, 5.70% abv also per the label.

Poured into a Duvel tulip snifter for the sake of science and aroma!

A - Pours a semi-clear translucent gold body, clearly filtered, with two fingers of thick frothy white head with good staying power that leaves huge beautiful fluffy lacing on the glass. Appears aptly carbonated.

S - Initial vinegar tartness, with essential classic notes of fresh potent Lagunitas hop oil in the background. Smells fresh & intriguing.

T - Taste follows the nose: a subtle vinegar / bacterial / lacto tartness atop notes of grain, wheat, and fresh piney herbal hops. The tartness is medium, and finishes with a yeasty bacterial feel. Notes of citrusy lemon / orange / citrus peels are also present. Definitely unique stuff. Not quite a gose, not quite a Berliner. The bacterial tartness lends into a citrus zest sour type flavor. The sour never really fades for me either, it stays pretty constant throughout.

M - Feel is bacterial & dry. Sticky, beckons the palate for another sip. Medium-bodied with excellent carb.

Overall, like it says, a unique sour mash ale from Lagunitas, could definitely see this attaining big success if it were more widely available as a summer sipper.
